He has possibly he nicest voice I have ever heard. I'm addicted. Ryan Adams has been a big part of my life musically for a very long time, since I was small and I've never really realized how grateful for that I am.
yeah, i haven't found a studio version of this song on YouTube either, but it's on the Jacksonville City Nights album that he made with the Cardinals. You should probably get it.
Would be cool but I don't think they won't have it here in Germany (that's where I live) because I think it's very special or rare (if you can't even find anything on YouTube.)
Norah doesn't have a separate version, but she sang on the studio version you can find on Ryan's "Jacksonville City Nights" album. She sings the part you see Neal Casal singing here.
there is no comparison. Ryan Adams rules house and Bryan Adams could never ever touch him. hands down. I feel like a fool eve posting this cause I thought that it was already understood
altru, you are a fucking idiot. Ryan Adams is so much better than Bryan ever was. How could one possibly compare the two? Leave you unneeded, ignorant comments in your head please so they won't blemish what is true art. Thank you.
This isn't confusing or homoerotic. It's like he's reading a letter from a woman to her husband who died. The couple went through the death of a child and the sorrow lead to many problems. The husband tried to relieve the pain through an affair. His wife ignored the affair knowing that she was in too much pain herself and couldn't comfort him. She forgives him and she misses him. The song is ultimately about how love can endure many things including death, cheating, and general neglect.
well if you see him perform live. Right before the verse of "summer when candie.." he lets out a huge sniff referencing the candy to coke, but i'm sure you're right about the general interpretation.
in verse three what it sounds like is hes talking about this woman, candy, comes and hes so hurt from her(his wife) being gone the child and his dept so he turns to her and he knows its not her(wife) but he wishes it was idk thats what i got from it
I love this song, but I can never get my head around Verse #3. "I knew what you were doing, That summer when Candy came around, But I had too much hurt to bother you". This leads me to believe that John was having an affair with someone called Candy, and the Widow knew about it. Is this what is implied?
"When we lost our first child I thought a little payment was overdue, And I want you so bad". Can somebody explain this to me, and what it has to do with the rest of Verse 3?
The lyric is 'a little pain was overdue.' I think that because she was hurt so much by the affair that she felt he needed to hurt too. And so the death of his first child was him feeling the pain that she did when she found out about the affair.

unbelievable song, but i prefer the original studio version with Norah Jones. This song just sounds better with the female voice.

Can you tell me where I can find it? I've searched for it but didn't find any version of Nora Jones. I have never heard her version.

Thanks. That makes sense and still fits. He could have turned to drugs instead of another woman for comfort.

love can endure thru anything on the day my husband drank himself to death i caught him cheating with my best friend. i still love him.

one of the best ballads ever written...and performed. Adams grips your soul and shakes it up a bit. Absolutely moving...
You don't have to understand every little nuance to appreciate this song...just go with it...

Lyrics are a bit confusing but the vocals ie: harmonys are unbelievable ! What an addition Neal is. Can play a bit of guitar too !

I knew what you were doing
That summer when Candie came around
But I had too much hurt to bother you
When we lost our first child I thought a little pain was overdue
And I wanted you so bad...
Cause you are always mine to keep when you're gone
Two silvers rings, one's on my finger and the other one's gone
Went underground with you, oh John
I miss you...
Oh John....
