I used to just take the bottom hose off and drain it out. Each time 600ml would come out. I would then drive for the week and then drain again and refill. Whalla, clean power steering fluid
retarded. never do this. best option is to remove the cap and get a turkey baster suck out as much fluid as you can, then fill back up with fresh fluid on (car off) , turn car on and move steering wheel lock to lock (as far as it will turn) both ways a few times each way then turn the car off. repeat until fluid drawn into turkey baster close to clean color
@dazubaman when im at work ill usually go through about a quart or two with the machine, id imagine the same amount would do with the your vehicle, just take your time, if the fluid isnt looking completely clear, dont worry thats normal, you just want to see a noticeable difference in the fluid you started with and end with in the reservoir
@axxNosferatu also i might add, the method shown is more of a "flush" what im speaking of and what most dealerships/repair shops offer is more of an "exchange" because "flushing" often times kills pumps by cleaning them out so well that the clearances that were once accounted for by buildup are now too large for the fluid to fill the necessary clearances to operate properly
@kragmutt you know when you got air in the line it will be loud when you turn the whell just take cap off the fluid level and keep turning wheel till there is no more sounds then put cap back on then bam no more air in lines
No Way!! If you do what this guy says fluid will pump straight up and make a huge huge mess everywhere. Jack the wheels off the ground and do same procedure without the engine runing to purge the system. Flush the pump by disconnecting the return line and then start engine while making sure to keep the resevoir full.
if you take both lines off the gear box then you wont be able to flush out the gear box. it will flow from the pump to the line you took off. so i would take off the return line to the power steering reservoir. that way it can flush out all of it.
NO. DO NOT put ATF in your power steering pump! Ever wonder why they make special power steering fluid? ATF fluid will slowly but surely destroy the system.
@3wheeler016 Many caps on older systems do specify dextron III atf. even my old toyota power steering uses it. "Power steering fluid" is derived from ATFs older formula for newer vehicals. ATF is actually what most systems use on the road today.
This method is horrible. If you remove the return line from the pump or reservoir (USALLY its clamped on) you can barb the hose, extend it, Plug the return line hose off the pump or reservoir. Fill er up. Let it run, Let it leak out the barbed, extended hose.
Not so smart to keep the car running if the belt is right next to what you r working on. If the belt your clothing can get in it... I would also recommend you always work with the car off, unless needed for it to be on. This is my sisters account by the way.
screw the belts! watch out for the fan! it could take your hand off quick! that fan is metal and moving very fast, will not give at all! snap a bone, cut flesh like butter! shrouds are there for a reason .
isnt it true that it wont hurt to just use transmission fluid

@axxNosferatu i did this but the fluid remained filthy, how much steering fluid until it becomes clear do you have to put in?

@3wheeler016 It really depends on the car, like mustangs, ford recommends using Mercon ATF Fluid on it.

You forgot to show how to do it - there is one thing repeating what you heard elsewhere and another having practical skils.
This is the usual rubbish from ExpertVillage.
