  • I'm not saying this couldn't work BUT have you ever noticed that so many so called 'attackers' lack aggression, power and any clue at all about violence? I know that if were hitting someone from the back with a bear hug that they would be lurched forwards & dazed. I would have a vice like grip on them closer to their elbows than this example. Believe me when I say that really aggressive people are difficult to rear heat butt and strike to their groin. Remember - attackers are seldom compliant.

  • that works but if they are lower on you for the grab, its harder to get your arms out.

  • @weahman Im looking around for some other ideas I can use and modify to enrich my self defense

  • very well explained!

  • This tech dose work very good but the nut are a easier target if you are not sure.

  • DEEJAY is right why give up a perfectly good SANKYO which is more painful in 3 areas wrist elbow and shoulder to apply the weaker more complicated grip of NIKYO.tHE MORE YOU FIDDLE AROUND THE MORE LIKELY HE WILL SUCCESFULLY COUNTER.

  • This was bad. I have done several test with diffrent defenses against bear hug and I can tell you right away you gona have a hard time getting this to work in real life!

  • When you drop your posture to start the move a more natural grip which you start to do is Sankyo. You're 80% there before you change to Nikkyo.

  • I dunno about 80% but a Sankyo can be faster to administer

  • That technique works better for a bigger person. I'm smaller so I'd go for a foot stomp or heel to the nuts to loosen or break the grip.

  • The thing about this technique is at real speed, the technique begins before the bear hug is completed. As soon as the attacker's arms come around, Nage should start moving to avoid the attack. If someone stronger completes a bear hug on you, it can be difficult to break.

  • You must study Aikikai. Your description reminded me of Aikido3d. I would grab a finger and break it(or at least hurt it until they let go) if I couldn't get out of the bear hug right away. Also I think I was taught to inhale immediately upon being hugged so you can exhale to slip out of it.

  • You are close. Grabbing the 2 small fingers on either of Uke's hand together and bending them outward will give you the upper hand quickly, unless the guy is on drugs and oblivious to pain.

  • Why change your grip and go to nikyo, when you already have sankyo? I'll take sankyo. You can go into an arm bar, choke, irimi nage, or koshi nage.

  • I would think it would help if you want to do some more advanced multiple-attacker stuff. Nikkyo brings the attacker straight down by his right leg. If he applied sankyo and turned clockwise, uke would be forced to move (to a spot behind nage's right heel). Either technique could be useful to trip up a potential attack. I'm no expert, but just a thought.

  • THe situation may not allow for Sankyo. It is difficult to use Sankyo in a closed in area. Nikkyo ALWAYS works.

  • what a joke

  • This bear hug was weird... I suppose it wouldn't even work... You could slip down from it. He should grab him at elbow level, not higher :/

  • Look this is not practical movements, because you should be stronger than the person who attacting you otherwise you couldnt even twist his hand and he could get the chance to fuck your ass.

  • It's not practical to think that way cuz it's impossible to always be stronger than anyone who could ever possibly attack you. Technique rules over strength. You learn to exploit his strength. He can only use strength/resist one direction at a time so obviously it's not a smart strategy to directly oppose it. Also, a lot people that appear strong don't have strong wrists. I thing Aikido capitalizes on this fact.

  • Not really following this one. The bear hug is supposed to hold you, so how could you slip under it?

  • There's another video by this guy that uses two atemi to get out of the hug. He leaves it out of this video. I haven't tried it so I don't know if the atemi would be effective or not.

  • Odd choice of technique....the instructor had a Sankyo in good position with his initial grip.....the transition between the two techniques isn't an easy one if you have someone really attacking you.

  • Ah.. but the topic hes teaching now is w..rist lock. so...

  • That is true, but this is a Fine Motor Skill! Good to use in some situations, difficult to use in a violent encounter. When the adrinaline is flowing and the heart is pounding, the body remembers Gross Motor Skills. Still good instruction up to the grip change.
