Such beauty of voice and interpretation! I was not aware that she recorded this aria and am so glad that I stumbled across this posting. Her voice is so full of pathos and the lyrics so clear. Heavenly!!!
@Operamagnifico She sang Amina in her early career, but it's a pity she only recorded this aria in 1945. When she was younger, and her voice more agile, she must've been a marvelous Amina. She also sang Zerbinetta, Lucia di Lammermoor and Sophie, but unfortunately no recording is left of those interpretations.
What a glorious, glorious piece of singing - the best of this aria I've heard. I was in Bellini's hometown of Catania recently, and over his tomb, in the Cathedral, are engraved the first words, and the first bars, of this aria - so sadly apposite given Bellini's early death: "Ah, non credea mirarti, si presto estinto il fiore" (Alas, I thought not to see you, your flower so soon extinguished)
Thank you for posting this video. It's the best. It's the best interpretation I've heard. It's pure Bel Canto!!!. I've always loved B.Sayão's voice. Alguso
Bidu Sayao studied with Jean de Reske and her enduring wonderful art was a link to Bel Canto through his influence - this is an lovely example of her at her best and one of my favourite recordings of anything ever ! Beautifully paced and shaded and always with perfect legato.... modern singers please take note that all the expression can be found in the music if you look there first
I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression. Yes, Callas was very much into the story and the meaning of the words. She had great acting abilities and she brought great character and presence to the stage. However, the difference is that Callas never used her 'true' voice, which is what Sayao did. Callas sang from the sound of her voice and inevitably 'created' her singing voice. When you sing from the spoken word naturally, your true vocal beauty is revealed.
Sayão was considered in her time the best Mélisande and the best Manon (Massenet). She was a wonderful singer and guess whom she liked and said was the greatest soprano? Yes, Callas.
Yes, the comparison as pointed out by Uruguruh is evident.
With respect to Callas, she had a great facility for singing. Sayao also had a fine voice. But that doesn't make you a beautiful singer. Singing is not about the voice, it is about how you use it. Callas sang from sound or notes. Sayao sang from words, for it is words that are the building blocks of a story or song. Notes have their part in the music but not when it comes to the moment of singing.
I think you have it wrong. Why don't you listen to Callas's masterclasses, her Medea, her Norma. In fact what is wrong is that what made Callas was the words and the way she used her voice to match the words and the acting not the just the sound or notes. Callas' voice was ugly but her technique was exceptional and she did not miss a note. Callas knew what she was doing. She knew the story and the character right to the soul
Her voice can only be described as sublime perfection. What ezquisite nuances in her singing. Ponselle always said that Sayao was the greatest of the yric Sopranos. She said that Sayao was the Caruso of the lyrics. There is no singer today who comes anywhere close to Sayao. She is a voice of the ages
Listening to her is like being in heaven. I heard Callas sing this but I think I like Bidu better sounds like a violin. I know this aria inside out because I sang it myself and it is soooooo passionate. If you are not passionate don't even attempt it.
Bidu Sayao studied for a time with the great tenor Jean de Reszke, and it certainly paid off. Her tone is beautifully pure and colored, her technique refined and elegant, and her artistry subtle and nuanced. She excelled in lyric and coloratura roles, especially those in the French repertoire, as well as in Mozart's operas. This is a moving and beautiful performance.
Two Mozart roles that Sayao sang at the MET were Zerlina (Don Giovanni) and Susanna (Marriage of Figaro). She also made a few recordings from these Mozart operas as well as others, I believe.
Thanks. As a fan of hers, I can't believe all these recordings that I was unaware of. This made me do some more searching, though. She had such an amazing technique that she sang everything from Nedda to Zerlina!
Perfection.

The elegant Sayao touch. The end is rushed, but that could be the conductor. This should be required listening for Callasites.

As Meltzerboy stated she sang Zerlina and Susanna. Live, complete recordings exist of both roles. She also recorded some of the arias commercially.
