J Mascis is probably the best, and most influential, guitar player to come along since the heyday of guitar-gods like Hendrix, Clapton, Page, etc. Go to a live show and see for yourself...
@902East Indeed fine sir. Any 3 piece that can make that much noise, playing 3 strings on 2 instruments (Lou plays a lot of chords) deserves pure respect.
@902East Influential means that he has influenced others. This means that we can measure his influence by going to the shows of every band /artist since Dinosaur Jr, rather than going to a Dinosaur Jr show. I love J, but I don't hear a lot of his influence Out There.
@902East Never seen a live show (but will do) and I have to agree mate. Considering he used to be a drummer and only started playing the guitar as he, "Didn't like what other people were doing"...... :-)
J Mascis's guitar playing is like when Jesus rose from the dead in comparison. And people say Jimi Hendrix can play guitar. Have you seen him play this live???? He plays rhythm,extremely complex lead with 14 pedals,and sings at the same time......O_o
@4thelulzonly wow dude get real... DJ is good and will get your head bobbing but Jimi melts your fucking face. there's a reason people like SRV and Eric Clapton worshiped him as a god. have you ever heard voodoo child? little wing? all along the watchtower? castles made of sand? this is why i hate fanboys.
@TheErikDane People thought Jimi Hendrix was really weird becuase all he did was play his guitar 24/7. Thats some major dedications\ but it paid off. But hell i agree with you. This guy kicks ass and you dont have to eat, sleep, and breathe guitar 24/7 364 days to be great. I practice for about 2-3 hours daily and im above avarage.
@HiFiAwardTour did J play background bells on this track, too?
A diff. between Jimi and J is that Jimi had a fast fret hand (observe the Woodstock or Atlanta Pop footage (like the solo coda for foxy lady)) while J is more of a fast picker w/ the occasional fast fretting like on the end solo of feel the pain. J plays more of a mumbly old man droll these days; it just seems harder for him to maintain the same youthful energy lvl. but this mumble is one of the most unique to come about since Jimi
@g0ldbuG J doesn't like playing fast. He laments using a Les Paul to solo on this record because it was 'too easy to play' and he ended up 'playing too fast'. I'm pretty sure J could shred with the best of them if he wanted to. Not that Jimi was a shredder. Both value sound and emotion over technique, which might be why they are compared. for me they are really different and comparing musicians is pretty pointless anyway
@12inchvertical Recently you can hear J shred on live versions of 'Mountain Man'. shredding is fine but I prefer to hear a fast fretting hand over a fast picking hand any day, but the shredding in MM works well, I must admit, because J mixes it up w/ other techniques throughout the song and the shredding doesn't lead to wankery as it does for so many other less talented, technical show-offs.
@4thelulzonly Well Dinosaur Jr isn't better than Jimi Hendrix that's just ludicrous. But them not being better than Jimi Hendrix has no effect on them being the best and awesome. It's always like this when people try to compare different artists, especially from different time periods. There were no such things as 14 pedals when Jimi was playing.

@902East
I agree. I don't understand why this band never reached full popularity. It's just one of the best bands around.

@HiFiAwardTour I'm not saying J is better than Jimi, but Jimi practiced a lot when he was a kid, J just picked up a guitar and made shit like this.
