NO, Do not harden your Barrel it needs to give a little when fired. If you harden it it can't give or (Stretch), it will shatter and wound you and anyone near you or worse. Go to "Graybeard Outdoors" on the internet for a lot of great info and advice on safe firing of Cannon.
I have about 150 hours in the build mostly in the wheels. I don't know exactly how much range it has but I shoot 800 grains of FF black powder behind a 1 lb. lead ball and I put a round through a five gallon bucket full of water at 75 yards and it was another 75 to 80 yards to the tree line and a friend heard the ball crashing through the trees :)
@crazycuntryboy2 There is a great new book out titled: GETTYSBURG… OTHER TIMES
It’s about two soldiers and a nurse from other times meeting in Gettysburg on the first day of the great battle. People that are on this post would love it.
Check out the book at my YouTube profile (GETTYSBURGbook) or search Amazon.
@crazycuntryboy2 If they didn't use grapeshot in during the war, then Why do I find grape shot when relic hunting? They definately did use grape shot as well.
The barrel was Lathe turned from a solid bar of 6150 High Tennsil Strength steel. The bore was drilled and reamed back 20" and the 1/8" fuse hole drilled a 1/2" forward of the back of the bore.
This White Oak is seasoned 120 years and is extremly hard. I stalled my mill out just trying to cut the taper on the trail and twisted the heads off the square head lag screws I used even with a pilot hole drilled! If you do the history the original carriges were made from White Oak.
check the wood everytime you fire it we had a cannon about 5-6 guns from us and the tail snaped off after the last shot. Thank god for matt switlik (civil war artillery expert.) We fire live with shells at camp grayling
that's pretty respectable for a little gun! Do you fire it live at all or just blanks? You might look into getting some friction primers from a Civil War Sutlery so can pull a lanyard like they really did instead of bits of fuse.
I machined a mold from Aluminum and have been casting 1 LB. Lead balls. These make a teriffic impact :) I only fire these at the gun club range, anywhere else it's strictly wadded paper towels!
In my garage Machine shop, working with photos from the Civil War, I used White Oak from a collapsed 110 year old barn, steel that I had lying arround my shop and about 150 hours of work.
Get ready to URBAN DOMINATION!

disturbedone5009 2 years ago
Looks beatifual!! How did you go about making the barrel? Or was it a pre-made donner berral?
Nwest82 2 years ago
that's just fucking cool, ever loaded it with anything other then lead balls, like grape shot for example?
fuckinghellyoutwat 2 years ago
They didn't use grape shot in the War between the States. They used Canister Shot. a lot smaller and a lot more effective.

Sorry i dont understand english very well but the metal you use was pure aluminum or did you use steel you found?
richardphat 3 years ago
I used 6150 High tensil strength steel for the tube. I used Aluminum only for the Cannon Ball Mold that I cast one pound lead balls with.
