Thankyou for posting this. A fascinating lecture from a great man. I sympathise with his annoyance and impatience with the unscientific attitudes and practices of many arts based linguists. It's far easier to carve out a personal fiefdom in the arts and defend it in the face of reason when you can ignore those inconvenient little things called facts which for some reason they get so worked up about in the hard sciences.
