I think Laurence Olivier should have won...in Marathon Man he is perfect as the mad dentist...the part when he tortured to Dustin Hoffman is really scary...I will never forget that part in all my lifetime.
The following year he also won for JULIA - he was appearing in a play so could not attend. Robards got very upset at the subsequent comment made by host Bob Hope who said he was "playing bridge with Marlon Brando and George C. Scott" so could not attend. He said he would decline any subsequent invitations to attend the Academy Awards - and stuck to this.
Revisited "All The President's Men" on weekend, and yes, Jason Robards pulls off his performance superbly. In fact, I think his role in the film has become some sort of template to many of his subsequent roles. Case: "Philadelphia".
It should have been Burgess Meredith. I'd give Robards his Oscar for "Julia" because Alec Guiness ("Star Wars") already had an Oscar at home. But Meredith has never won an Oscar.
@nWo315 True, admittedly an idiotic line for her to say. Don't blame poor Tatum though... it's the writers of the show to blame. Just one of the countless moronic lines presenters have been given on Oscar night.

Harvey Keitel should've been nominated for his peformance in Taxi Driver, and he should've won.

Burgess Meredith's performance was equally, if not more, amazing in Rocky. I wonder how they decided the winner of this one.

Great performance - I think he utterly deserved to win. Competely inhabited the role - and the screen when on.

I'm glad he won but I hate how he has accused film actors of being sellouts.

I like Robards but I really don't think he deserved to win for All The President's Men. His win the following year was even more of a mystery to me.

Burt Young was definitely bummed at not winning look at his face

Worst Oscar win ever. Ned Beatty and the Penguin were both awesome. No one even remembers Jason Robards

@DaBigChalk1991 She had a much rockier recovery than Anna Paquin. She was in an independent film in 2006 or 2007 called "My Brother"

Laurence Olivier was the best, I think. Still, a very weak year.
