  • solosolosolosolosolosolosolo

  • Now that was a jam sesson!

  • This is amazing! However, I'm kinda sad about the audio quality. Is there a better, cleaner version up on youtube?

  • Neftali, thanks for posting this wonderful clip!

  • Great group! First saw them live in the early 70s at a skating rink in Brick, NJ. They are an inspiration.

  • @ManOfRhythm - Brick, NJ!! that's is FUNNY AS HELL! THEE whitest town in America had Mandrill jammin! (I live in Brick now)... I just saw Mandrill at the BB King Theater in NYC tonight.... they were excellent as ever! so fkn awesome; also saw them in 2002 at S.O.B's and maybe 2000 in Prospect Park! My favorite group of all time. When they play this song (as their entrance song), it is just too much for the senses! Peace!

  • @avp0713 I was at BB Kings too! Mandrill was killin'!

  • @soulgriot - I was the dancing fool up there near the front "Lockin" like Rerun! lmao, but that's just me.... I DO get carried away. Can't help it. Mandrill, Ohio Playes, EWF, KatG, New Birth.... etc, etc.... I can't listen to that ole good shyt without breakin it down!

  • ww.youtube.com/watch?v=2p9VjHyycHc

  • great musik from a great band. to bad not too many folks have heard of their work, this how groups should get down.

  • I FUCKING LOVE THEM SO MUCH.

    GODDAMN!

  • Tenho este LP,ganhei logo que saiu.Vejam como sou velho. No Brasil poucos o conhecem.Agradeço ao neftalsantiago por este presente.

  • @marcelo72773 Acabei de assistir e já estou baixando os discos deles. Puta som!

  • Great an fantastic group. Brilliant music. I know them when I was 10 years old. A big influence in my life.

  • It's crazy how each of the playing like 5 instruments live.

Just introducing the takes like 2 minutes just to announce all the instruments each one of them play.lol

  • I remeber being in the audience at one of the B-A-D-D-E-S-T- MANDRILL concerts of all time @ Lincoln Center's Philharmonic Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra. Mandrill entered from the back of the auditorium on this piece. WOW! One of the top 5 concerts of my LIFE!!! Love Mandrill to this day and forever!

  • I still get chills hearing this amazing orchestration. They do NOT do music like this today. Mandrill is and has been one of, if not my absolute favourite artists since the 70s. They have no song I dislike.

  • @BreezesofConey

Wow! You are so kind. I really appreciate that.

  • @BreezesofConey ...not even Polk Street Carnival?

  • I first started listening to Mandrill back in the early 70's while I was in the military serving overseas. I still have my collection of Mandrill record albums that I bought back them. One of my top 3 favorite bands of all time !!!

  • this is the jam! thanks for posting this--i still rock it regular. so happy when i can see anything about mandrill.

  • i want that organ frookin freaks

  • Wooow!!

  • my uncle told me to look up a few bands back in the days and this was one of them. Love it specially as a upcomming producer. Homework for sure peace

  • @fortgreene31

Do yourself a favor and pick up the Polydor collection not the Anthology. It leaves out too many songs.

If you get the box set then all you are missing is "Mandrill Land". Some of it is on Anthology but again it is best to get a copy of the album. Recording instruments is a dying art form. Drum micing as specially today engeneers dont know what their doing.

  • I still have the vinyl of this from waaaaaaaaaaaay back - was awesome when I first heard them in the mid-70's - still is !!

  • 24hrs of Mandrill and Carlos Santana would clear up all of this confusion in this world!!!!

  • Just can't get enough of that Mandrll stuff. One of the best bands ever. Used to play this on my 8 -track player in my car. Good memories!!!

  • I love the FUNK! First time hearing these guys. Love the drum solo at 5:56!! Gonna have to dig more of Mandrill out of Youtube.

  • I give Mandrill Big Props!!!!

  • Downunder Australia. Bring that shiz!

  • Que buena Rola no creia encontrarla aqui.

  • Man, you just made my life !

  • I wonder if anyone really know how hard and long they practiced putting the band together. Long nights on the bus traveling from gig to gig. Your Mom was such a wonderful support during those days. Congratulations on continuing in your rise to the top. Cathi in California 4/8/2011

  • I was Bundy's wife. We were married at the end of 1971 and all of the Mandrill musicians and several family members attended. We haven't been in touch over the years, but I continue to try to reconnect. Cathi in California 4/8/2011

  • East coast funk at it,s best.

  • LIRD HAVE MERCY!! n

  • In the stratosphere! Respect!

  • WOW!!!!! I still play this record, MANDRILL

  • WOW!!!!!

  • Glad to see this on youtube I use to jam this in my 69 couger rolling hard with my 8 track. Thanks for the memories.

  • Does anyone know the name of the show they performed on. Was it a local college thing maybe or nationwide? Can I see other footage from the show? Sorry, any leads would be helpful. :)

  • "soul train"

  • @JRameyful Actually the show was called SOUL! It taped live in NYC and aired on WNET Channel 13 from 1968 to 1973, hosted by Ellis Haizlip. It started out local then went national in 1969. SOUL! came 2 1/2 years BEFORE "Soul Train." For 9 more newly digitized episodes, inbox me for the website. I am producing a documentary on the SOUL! show called Mr. SOUL! so all you SOUL! fans out there please feel free to contact me! Thanks! Melissa Haizlip in CA

  • Mandrill is one of the coolest and most underrated bands ever!! These guys throw down the real funk!! This video is priceless and will live forever! Thanks for posting this soulful piece of music history!!!!

  • really impressing

  • what became of Claude Cave?

  • desde siempre pintaron para excelentes.

  • OMG !

  • Wow! What a beautiful way to greet the morning :D

  • Great ! Made me think about "descarga".

  • yeah man.. I had a Mandrill album.back in the 70's cool.. find my genuine music on youtube as "Joggyn Smyler"

  • these brother's were free to create.....reminds me when santana hit the seen at Woodstock.

  • I remember when this song was released back in 1971 while still living in Wash DC.

  • What a cool song. Incredible rhythm.

I got the vinyl album when it came out years ago...great music, great album cover. Man, got to say it again...incredible rhythm.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • i was in high school when i first heard mandrill now im 54 yrs old and have 9 grandchildren and i still feel the love and passion that emanates from this brothers soul still after all this years !! tnx neftali for keping the fire alive after all this years thru this great videos...

  • A relative newcomer to the phenomenon that is Mandrill - I discovered them in the late 90s, and they forever changed the way I listen to music. This song is so raw and powerful, and a great precursor to what they would produce on future albums. Way ahead of their time, NOBODY sounds like these guys. MANDRILL!!!!!

  • Wow, Neftali I thought you were the original drummer for Mandrill. What year did you join the group and is Claude still with us ? Mandrill is one of my all time favorite groups. I got the chance to see Mandrill live in Wash Dc back in 1999. That was truly a magical night.

  • Oh man! That was a show on PBS called "Soul! with Ellis Haislip. I saw Mandrill for the first time 40 years ago and now get to see the same performance. So glad to find your channel and so glad you guys are still doin' it.

  • thank you from my heart , grew up with you guys my ex is from Panama love you all

  • PURE......RAW.......UNADULTERATED FUNK! Neftali, YOU GUYS were WAY ahead of your time. I'm in my mid 50's Brother, and I grew up listening to Mandrill. Your "Theme" describes the energy, the force in which you guys played. The tight., expert musicianship; you guys paved the way for groups like Cameo, SOS Band, Mass Production, Brick, Dazz Band, etc, 10 years later. As good as those bands were, they didn't come close to the power with which MANDRILL performed!

  • What happened to Claude Cave why is he not with the band, or is he because they have only been to DC twice as I remember. and when I saw them 1999 he was not with them. And the funny thing is I could play the organ part better than the guy who was with them. Oh I have all of the albums and I would like to talk to the brothers from Colon Panama because I was stationed there in the army from '69 to '70.

  • Back in the seventies, they major after concert parties and it wasn't pick here or he can go, everybody was invited, and met them at their party. This was just after playing Lincoln Center,I got to talk to the kid with the beard, even though they just mentioned the names, I can remember a one, but able to relate, coming out the jungles of Vietnam

  • Great footage! Thanks for posting

  • talkin to the man right now who owns the selmer trumpet in this video.....he bought it from Lou.

  • During this period back in the early and mid 70s Mandrill was one of the hottest groups to walk the music scene. They were funky...real funky!!! You simply can't mistake this music for anything else other than what it is meant to be and that is FUNKY!!! If you don't understand it keep your negative comments to yourself. Thank you Mandrill for all the years of powerful music.

  • Love it and I am so inspired to write. Thanks Guys thank u God for Mandrill : )

  • Thanks for this post. Mandrill is one of the greatest and most underated funk bands. I always go to see them when they are in town and they still jam and do it better than ever.

  • @loks750,

It's great to have you as a fan. We do appreciate our fans comments.

  • @loks750 any similar bands ? i really love this one :D

  • lol did anyone one else come across this video trying to find the primate called a mandrill?

  • @jerryberry07,

I'm sure other people have done the same. If you want to see the primate video go to my Pandrillus video.

  • @jerryberry07

Looking for silver, you've found gold!

  • Mandrill jammed back in the day!

  • PBS, used to get in for shows like this. I miss quality music programming, radio, and television stations alike could take a page outta PBS' book. We need more things like this so that we aren't repeating crap in the future for our kids.

  • The T.V. show was called SOUL on channel 13

  • WOW! Pure serendipity to stumble across this. I loved these guys and I have their first 8 Track with this cut on it (as well as the 33 LP viny versionl) and actually have an 8 Track player that still works in this age of high-tech digital music. Yeah, all antiques just like me but that rockin' young man still lives in my heart and soul. Thanks for the memories.

  • funky like the monkey!

  • This program was called SOUL on channel 13!!! KICK ASS!!!!

  • Menta, I think that name of the show is 'Soul" with Ellis Hazlip ( i may have not spelled his name correctly). It was on PBS in my market.

  • Sorry, I am new to this post...just came across it searching for some other Mandrill shit i knew...um...can you tell me what T.V. show this is...I would love thru some sources i know to find this. Thanks....and thanks for posting.

  • @Mentagasm,

It's nice to see our fans answer your question. Glad you like the music. I don't post the name of the shows because of weird laws but the bottom line is it is my history channel of my life you dig. Cool, Stay Up!

  • @neftalisantiago We still beat these rekkids in Chicago man...this is way out! Glad you all are still around. Mandrill is def one of those bands man that we love. We wax junkies. A lot of us still party to people who play Records. i have subscribed to your page. Thanks for replying.

  • @Mentagasm The Show was called SOUL on channel 13!! N.Y.C.

  • @Mentagasm I 'm not sure, but I do beleive, it's " The Soul Train Show"!

  • @Mentagasm I think I recognize the show's host. It was a show on PBS (Channel 13 in New York City). The one-word name of the show was a common term for black popular music, and ryhmes with "bowl," as in "Bowl Music," "Bowl Train." I don't want to state the show's name if it'll get this post deleted.

  • @njblack73 I had never thought about it that way, that giving out a free plug might get your post deleted. But mine didn't get deleted a month before yours, so I guess after 40 years, a statute of limitations exists for that sort of thing. lol

  • Right On!

  • I wonder how many kids know that Kanye West sampled/ was inspired by this band. Gilly Hines sampled on 'Talk about our love', Peace and Love sampled in 'Two words'.

  • awesome

  • PBS needs to release these old SOUL! episodes on DVD. But I guess getting the copyright clearences for the music is kinda costly.

  • keepin the funk alive!

  • GREW UP WITH THE MANDRILL

  • These cats are fucking badd....

  • I hope to see you on stage in Paris soon !!

New Morning(10e) , best place to play :)

  • I remember the show Soul with Ellis Hazlip from NYC's WNET. Did not realize my boys Mandrill appeared on it. Great find. If someone has a copy of the full hour that Stevie was featured back in the day please post it.

  • Percussion

    respect

  • what is the name of this song

  • @aaronldietrich The song is Mandrill; so are the group's name and the name of the album it was featured on (their 1971 debut on Polydor). They're one of the answers to that trivia question about bands whose name, debut album and a song title are the same. Other bands like that include The Monkees & Bad Company. This band and select others are where funk was simmered into a true concoction of love. Amazing band.

  • Ummmm....... Mandrill ! My Uncle Winston from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, luvs sum 'Drill ! Heavyweight stuff ! Thanks 4 the vid !!!!!

  • maybe seeing things like this will bring the feel back to playing. maybe when muzicians see this they will strive to reach a higher standard. thanx for the posting.

  • That Bass Line is an ANCHOR holdin it down! Awesome!!

  • the legendary MANDRILL.....man i went Rutgers Univ in New Jersey in the 70's, thats when I first smelled this funk..........luv u guys thanx Mr. santiago for all the memories! where ru guys playing???????????

  • Back in the 70's, Ellis Haizlip, producer of "Soul" Channel 13 WNET in NYC, brought a richness and variety of culture, music, dance and performances that today's programs in their limited capacity could never match. Mandrill takes me back to the parties in the quad at RU...tamborines, whistles and cowbells. Thanks, for the post Neftali Santiago.

  • classic, classic, CLASSIC!!!!! ain't no party like a Mandrill party ya'll!

  • Sweet footage !

  • Neftali I remember paying my ^ bucks to see Mandrill at CCNY in Brooklyn and they released Fencewalk and the crowd went bonkers...I too remember those concerts in Central Park with my Yago Sangria and herbs(lol). The last time I saw anyone was about 1977 when i met Omar Ben Hassan in the World Trade Center wearing his all white Muslim garb. He was suprised anyone recognized him

I'D LOVE TO SEE ALL YOU AGAIN

  • They could play EVERY Instrument! I wear this song out whenever possible

  • RIGHT ON! thanks for posting. my honky dad hipped me to this great band as a kid, and it's great to find other people know 'em too.

  • Awesome. They must have been an amazing band to have seen live.

  • Yo. This is amazing. I play music like this for my 5 year old daughter. I love it when I hear her singing these types of songs and humming the beats. Thank You for making this awesome music.

  • No, The great =est funk band ever !!!

*Please retape the audio and mesh it, please.

  • Well your dealing with live TV. What you hear is the way it was mixed and broadcasted. It's best to just enjoy it. This is extreamly rare footage. Think about that. Peace.

  • Goes without saying I enjoyed it. Yes, I'm aware its a TV line( analog) - was just a thought, cheers.

  • History is history. Good music Thanks

  • One of the greatest funk bands ever !!!!!!

  • I wish I was there. Incredible....

  • Man when i was young my uncles would play their music....All remember is those groovy album covers they used to have....Iol.....I said groovy.

  • Amazing footage. Thank you so much. It looks like this was posted by Neftali himself, so I'll also give you a shout for the excellent work on the other Mandrill material. Just Outside of Town has some outasite stuff on it. Mango Meat, Fat City Strut, Mandrill was hot! Thank you!

  • THIS BAND was NOT!!! Under RATED...

They were ONE of the Biggest BANDS of the 70's EVERYBODY in THe HOOD played those Albums Believe me My older Brother and his friends would get Smoked OUT!!! Turn on the black light and just LISTEN to the WHOLE ALBUM for HOURS!!! And let me sit in the with them and let me catch a Contact...and bug out off this MUSIC great DAYS MAn!

  • Mandrill, I am a fan forever, I only caught one show in my lifetime, but I play at least one Mandrill recording a day. I can't say that for any other group, even my own band ! Though the music of Mandrill I have learn to LOVE ONE ANOTHER

  • Did you hear at 2:11 and 2:33 adn 4:15 when the percussions come in? Tell me exactly what Amazon Jungle Forest were these brothers trained in? Are you going to say Prospect Park? Cause imma tell you thats right brother.. There hasn't been another group like this and I don't think there will be. I remember as a child and getting spooked by the Mandrill album cover. I was already a budding Sax, Bass and Drummer.

  • these guys played everything from funk , jazz, rock to samba and latin...dam...can u smell the real fuuuuunnnnkkk...my fellow youtubers!!!!!!!!

  • I smell the funk............ and it smells real good!

  • @sweetdaddy0000

Totally, I hear you my fellow youtubers!!! We gotta keep the funk alive; for real!

    Mandrill, you guys rule!!!

  • one the funkiest underrated groups of the 70's.

  • @sidaartha1 Of the '70s? Try of all funk history. Mandrill could match anyone for sheer grooves and talent (and you gotta love any band that uses photos of mandrill apes on their album covers). Notice how many old school funk bands from this era are still performing; it's a testament to the sheer power of the groove. No matter how they try, hip-hop can't touch the real "old schoolers" like Mandrill, Tower of Power, P-Funk, et al. Didn't mean to dis what you said, just expanding on it.

  • @elc1960 I totally agree with you. I think you misunderstood my comment. Or maybe I wasn't clear enough. When mentioned groups of the 70's i just meant Mandrill being in their prime one of the funkiest groups of that era that I felt deserved more credit than they got. And your right they can go head up with any funk group in their era and today. They can play any style it don't matter what genre it is. So you and i are on the same page. Thank u 4 sharing.

  • was that the late great JB looking on at 0:50 ?

he must have ben sweating when hearin these cats rock on down!!

    beauty!!!

  • This is my first time hearing this multi-talented band. I'm a very big Mint Condition fan, so you already know that I'm a big supporter of LIVE INSTRUMENTATION! This truly inspires me to learn at least 5 instruments. To bad my Generation will never see this because they so stuck on today's Mainstream music, which sucks.

  • DNICKS,

    Nice comment, Thank You.

  • cats were in unison...2 day its all about me,me,me,me,me how much me get 4 this song,.

  • usbreaks,

Yes we did have a bond, thank You.

  • great post of a great band.....ty..

  • Wow these cats can blow!!! There is no comparing musicians from this era with today. The freedom to experiment with music is long gone from the commercial music industry.

  • You said it Brother, thank you for your comment, it means alot.

  • man swu guys in nyc in the 70's.....simply the best...are u guys still plaYING???? STILL HAVE ALL THE VINYL..DM LUV THIS GROUP

  • These cats were special back in the day & are still very special in this current era of music. We need more artist with this flare & raw talent. We could most likely find cats in their late 50's playing somwhere in central park n.y. or somewhere in oakland cali. jammin like this. My uncle & his boys would jam like this in his basement & i was @ the tender age of 4 & i'm still hooked. I love my uncle for schooling me as a youth. Peace too my old school head jazz/funk uncle!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Evidently, bein' able to play three or more instruments was a pre-requisite for bein' a member of this group!! These brothers still perform, and they still sound great!!!!

  • Ah, the Central Park concerts with Mandrill, Labelle and the Chambers Brothers...now those were rockin' times!

Love this, and glad to say I was in on this group from the very beginning. Glad to have found this on YouTube!

  • LarkLogan,

Hey you remember them! Those were great shows to perform at.

  • Neftali: I knew Coffee's brother very well, and my Dad brought me to all the shows, as I was still in high school in when you guys played Central Park and Hofstra University. Don't know if you remember, but I used to bring brownies to everyone backstage. Caught Mandrill several times in Boston in the late 70's when I was in college - don't recall if you were still with them then. It was all rockin'!

  • These dudes rock. I once owned every one of their albums from 71' to 77' . Nothin' like cruisn' with the top down, listening to Mandrill blare on the 8-traks and albums! And I'm a 62 year old WASP!

  • The difference today is .. when introducing , instead of Carlos playing Flute , Sax , trombone , guitar .... a sickly multi- talented MUSICIAN .

You get 50 cent on drum machine , getting the dope and bail money and sampling the hell out of better music .

Music today is harmarginzed , cookie cutter sampled crap with no originality .

  • I agree these guys are dope.

But I disagree with you about the condition of music today. Taking 50 cent as your example of how music creativity is bankrupt is ludicrous. One could comment that most music today, especially hip hop/rap, has become too commercialized.

But it isn't the sampling or drum machines that create this situation, as these are tools in a musicians repertoire...

  • I agree with you 100%. Sampling and drum machines are tool when used creatively

  • Outstanding, I haven't heard this side since college!!!!!

  • They're all young here and you could tell something special was about to happen here!!!!

  • RIP Fudgie Kae Solomon

  • Does anyone know the name of this song? Simply awesome music .. I have listened to this thing 5 times today already...bout to be 6.

  • Mandrill is the name of the song lol.

  • It is simply named ''Mandrill'' and this piece is from their first album also simply named ''Mandrill''.

  • Thanks for that !!! (-_^ )

  • I imagine this is the kinda shit Jimi wanted to do and was actually doing it when he got the Gyspy Sun and Rainbow band together for Woodstock.

  • I think so too, more along the lines of Funkadelic and Mandrill

  • oh yeah! Ape is High and rising!!

  • carlos santana?...a lil bit?:)..yeah i know its the only and only mandrill just saying lol

  • They kicked the ass of every group out there with this alone.

  • Whoa man, smoothest drum solo transition i have ever heard.

  • So awesome. Bring it back!

  • How do you sum this up really! What a band/group/orchestra!! How u can match that these days?? Just a different attitude back then! Bliss

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Esta banda tem um astral incrível!!

  • Thank you so much Mr. Santiago, for sharing this beautiful and timeless music. Music is a living force created by the most high, we can't control it, nor harness it, just get on and try to hold for the ride!!!!

  • dayng!!

  • fuck mandrill love mandrili !!!!!

  • OMG!!!!! This is bliss. Pure bliss man. I actually remember watching this show as a kid in Philadelphia. Thanks for posting.

  • this is pure raw soul music !!!!
