I have been told potatoes do better if you plant them on the dark side of the moon, and any other root crop will do better also.I have heard they will resist disease easier
Plants look gorgeous. Thanks for posting. Clever idea to save then replant your own pototoes.
Readers - If you have a family member or friend give some of their fresh organic produce you find especially tastely to you, consider saving, then replanting the seed. Starting your own "seed bank" could be a great way to ensure you have quality, inexpensive seeds on hand when you get ready to plant. Many Youtube videos on how to do this.
Potatoes may be planted as soon as the ground can be worked in the early spring, but you must use good judgment. Potato plants will not begin to grow until the soil temperature has reached 45 degrees F.
I've also heard used tires work good as well center a tire over a potato plant as they grow fill the tire will soil, add more tires as needed. when the potatoes are ready just knock the stack of tires over and harvest.
I haven't tried it because I was told too late but a friend said to grow them in a garbage can. Start at the bottom and as they start getting taller shovel on more dirt and they will grow potatoes up the whole can. Like I said I haven't tried it yet but if it works could be a cool trick.
My potatoes are growing like wildfire, along with the rest of my raised bed stuff. It's a new garden and I was worried, but I have shit growing everywhere!
I just planted three potatoes for the very first time. I noticed that they became slightly soft while the eyes were growing. Is that something I should be concerned about or is a soft potato not a problem? there were no obvious scars that I could see.
Your seed potato can be soft when you plant, it is not a problem. The seed is the initial food source for the plant. It will usually dissolve away into the soil as the plant develops. By the way, you can 'hill up' the potato plants with soil as they grow, or use hay or other clippings. We threw all our grass clippings in the walkway next to our potatoes one year, when we went out to dig, we found all the potatoes growing in the mulch between the rows, nice and clean...
oh woe is me I think my heart is broken I planted a month ago I didn't let them sprout theres no sing of life back there yet still have tomatos and green pepers though thanks do you need direct sun light?
I have heard it is good to grow in tires. Place a tire and fill with soil and potato. When leafs form above soil line you add a tire and fill again. Continue as long as you wish...
You have to be careful growing food items in tires, they tend to leach chemicals. People who work at tire facilities are required to wear gloves - and for good reason.
No they do not. Tires do not break down and they entrain the heavymetals within the matrix of the rubber. They do not leach plastacisers like many of the ready made plastic pots.
that process of putting the soil up around the plant as it grows is called earthing up. you will be able to see little "buds" or sections off the main plant that look like it would produce roots, and when you do you can wait until its about 6 inches above the ground before u earth up, then wait till it goes another 6 inches and do it again. you can harvest your potatoes when the leafy part of the plant (the top) dries up n pretty much dies.
Potatoes are great for growing in places with little garden room. Use 5gal pots, can move them around if needed. And when it comes to harvest just dump bucket upside down and pick out your potatoes. Reuse dirt and start a new batch.

But for flowers and such tire planters are nice.
