Great waiata. Few know that it originated as a Kanak song from New Caledonia, translated and adapted by two Maori women who travelled there in the '80s and spent time with the independence movement.
Man i've had trouble posting this comment. The formatting keeps changing when i post it so i've had to delete and repost half a dozen times. The change back to Aminor is on "nui"
Cool! Hōhepa is a lecturer at Massey University who starts every class wth a song - gotta love it! There are a couple of Americans in the class too. Did you know Hawaiian language has a lot of similarities to Māori?
It's only 2 chords. The comments section here doesn't allow spaces so i couldn't format it how i wanted but hopefully you get it. The change back to Aminor is on "nui". The formatting changes when i post it.
Thanks Megan, here's a translation: All the nations, All the nations, Let the people of the Pacific Rim be united. E-i-a-i-e. Listen and support it. E-i-a-i-e. Hold on, Hold on, To your independence and compassion. Women, Women, Rise up and be strong! Men,Men, Listen, be supportive, and be strong. People,People, Be proactive and live.
It was too long to separate out sorry. For any non-New Zealanders who don't know 'Kia kaha' means 'Be strong' - it's nice to use in every day conversation.
