When you have quantum space holes, wormholes, etc, they are essentially shortening the distance between two points in space and that is what Aperture was doing since the 50s. Black Mesa took much longer and instead of creating a bridge, they created cracks between dimensions where creatures were instantly appeared in our dimension via the Resonance cascade event in 200X.
