I was wondering does the DS Keyboard software run standalone without an external synth?
Not that its not great, its bloody excellent, but I'd like to know if you can jam with it not using a computer or synth module but with internal sounds?
I love this but for some reason i can only use it when the wifi router is connected to the internet. This is slightly annoying as that means cant really use it live.
you take your wifi game, set wifi connections to a wireless router, test connection, if connetion works continue/if it does not repeat the 2 previous steps, then start the dsmidiwifi on your computer and the ds keyboard thing on your ds, it will connect automatically
i managed to download the stuff. but is there seriously only one soundeffect? i only heard the piano. and on top of that the sound didnt come from my ds but my pc screen-_-
In the video, the sound is coming from my PC too. Just grab more SoundFonts or different synthesizers to control. Theres thousands of different things you could potentially use.
thanks for your feedback. but while you were typing these replies i was already going back to nitrotracker cause i thought dsmidiwifi sucked a bit. although your skills at playing on it rocked and thats why it makes everyone eager to get this homebrew:P
The apps serve different purposes and are by the same author. Depends what you wanna do. Nitro now includes DSMIDI support so you can use your DS as a sequencer basically.
Does this work with a router? I use a router with wireless support. It's hooked up in my brothers room with his computer. Will this work if I run the DSMIDIWifi server on my computer?
- so zero latency when keyjamming for example. There's the classic Paula sound which people swear by and love... it's all personal preference and what is right for you - personally, I will keep my Amiga. :)
If doing chiptunes the modern way is what you want to do, Linux, Windows, even MacOS will all perform the same; we have multiplatform MilkyTracker, GoatTracker (for SID tune creation), SchismTracker, etc.
The Amiga, however, offers all the original ProTrackers, AHX, and recently HivelyTracker if you have a high-end Amiga. The latter two are designed for making chiptunes. I will always prefer to use my trusty Amiga for chipmusic - there's no audio drivers involved
There's no hardware wave synthesis going on. People are calling tunes made on modern computers "chiptunes" because of what they sound like, when really there's nothing "chip" about them. We're using software samples of tiny looping waves - that gives us the chip sound - rather than the original way of the sound chip generating waves.
So, back to your question, it's apples and oranges, really! :)
from years ago. Back then, you couldn't use realistic recorded sounds or samples; all you had to play with was what the chip could do; eg. Nintendo NES only had square, triangle, and noise waves, plus a very low-res sample channel. It's what people did inside these limitations that gave us the chiptune sound.
These days we have 16bit full stereo multichannel sound cards. Chiptunes made on modern computers in say; MilkyTracker, are done completely in software.
Strange! YouTube didn't post my reply to you telling what the tune was! :( Anyway, yeah it's in the credits as you've found out. :)
I ended up writing 3x the amount YouTube allows for comments, so lets split it across a few posts:
I think the definition of what a chiptune is has changed over the years. These days, chiptunes or chipmusic aren't really chiptunes in their original meaning, which was music made by using the simplistic synthesizer chips in the computers and games consoles from
You've convinced me! Great idea. :) I'll find some free time sometime this coming week, finish the next stage of the MIDIbox, and control it with the DS.
In fact, the new version of NitroTracker is out, now with DSMIDIWiFi connectivity. I wonder if I could sequence something using NitroTracker and play it back on the SID...
Nice demo, I'm so excited by this software, the possibilities are awesome for me. I just need to get myself the stuff to run homebrew on my ds, i'm very short of cash at the moment so maybe after xmas!
Good luck with getting homebrew equipment! I am using a Supercard MiniSD, which is probably one of the chepest and easiest ways to get homebrew running.
Thanks! :) I'm magnitudes better with a real piano keyboard for obvious reasons, but the coolness factor compensates somewhat. ;D Glad you liked it. :)
