didn't maynard start his career singing alot of songs in a low key anyway? I've listened to some early tool songs and most of the singing on them is on low key.
age=nothing to do with it, he's 46 not 90. opera singers who are twice his age can sing every note perfectly. I think he's just not into some songs as much. I watched the blood into wine documentary and in it he talks about emotionally evolving away from certain things that were bothering him earlier in his life. Saying he is pretty much done with screaming as a result of moving past that point, etc
@LittleEmoBoy001 age has a lot to do with it, an Opera singer is different he was screaming his head off for many years. Just take for example the scream in The Grudge, if you dont know what im talking about i urge you to check out a few live video's out there, and thats just one small example of what he used to do day after day during his tours also check out Tick's and Leeches and try and tell me after doing day in and day out that it has no effect on his voice
Age has nothing to do with it, look at tom araya from slayer, still screaming and singing and he is older than maynard. Rob halford, way older than maynard, still screams/sings. Maynard didn't even scream as much as some of these other vocalists. I think he just hasn't taken care of himself physically the way he use to since he started this wine business. If you notice he isn't as fit as he once was, again not an age thing, look at sylvester stallione at 65 for goodness sake!
And my point with the above statements is that I think alot of maynards singing style came from his physical being, his muscle, his viscera so to speak. Maybe not working out as much as he use to or whatever is really the cause behind it. Being more fit, having a better cardio disposition increases respiratory capability greatly. From the looks of maynard lately he hasn't really been working out. Just a thought.
And mind you I am only talking about specific songs that require specific respiratory output, like the ones you mentioned. As we can all hear he sounds amazing on songs like the noose and gravity.
@grr915 is true, age does make a person's voice deeper the older they get, and james hetfield blew out his voice during black album tour, why do you think their vocals have sucked even harder than their instruments since then?
I hate myself so much for missing that tour.. :(

maynard probably hates that he can't sing no more. his voice just isn't there. its probably frustrating for him.

Refreshing. Live recording without all the off key audience sing along and insipid noise. Look forward to Tim's brilliant work.
