Absolute favorite version of this classic story. Alister Sims is the best. It is best in B&W...but that's ok..it's the movie that I love. Thanks...and it's the best scene too!!
I just found out what Mrs. Dilber says as she takes off down the stairs, after Scrooge tells her to take the day off. It's an old British saying "Bob's your uncle"!
@DwightFry78 Yep! It was on TV yesterday and I spotted him! You'd have thought that no one would be allowed anywhere near a shot with a mirror (that's 'meer' in the USA) in it.
It's a Shakespearean moment when his robe flies behind him into the next room. Nothing that good happens in cinema anymore--those little moments of permanence, like Orson Welles' sinister profile in the Ferris wheel.
alsator sim was good in scrooge(A Christmas Carol) but the movie's script wasn't strong enough and didn't have enough material. A Christmas carol is a good tale but more fit for the stage.
I finally watched the whole movie for the first time this year when i was a kid i usually fell asleep around christmas present. I laughed so hard at this scene. best version by far
@wenglishsal ... Hee hee.. don't you just love his laugh.. 'I must have a label... label.. label... label... Brilliant.. Alistair Sim is and was a genius.. and there are so may fantastic films of his to enjoy too..*Ahh ... watches and smiles once more*
I agree that no one comes close to Alistair Sims performance as Ebenezer Scrooge! This is the only one that I truly love to watch, the others just cannot come close to this one. And it really is better in black and white.
A Christmas Carol with Alastair Simm is the best Christmas movie of all time. Watch the scene towards the end of the movie when Scrooge is dancing about and looks in the mirror. If you look carefully, you can see a stage hand peeking out behind a curtain!
@clea9785 That's a fascinating comment you have made, i know the scene you are talking about and it confounded me for years, i thought it might be something a bit more sinister but thanks for finally clearing that.
And you're right its the best version and scrooge ever.
@femsual Yeah, me too - but somehow he even got colorized here!
I wonder if they'd spotted him during production, but let it go so as not to lose such a great performance by Mr. Sim. Seeing it now I just take him as another ghost.
I thought it was starring Alastair Sim, not "Alistair Sims". Anyway I like the colour version, its surprisingly well transformed considering it used early technology. I probably agree the b/w version is better for atmosphere.
It's interesting but this film actually IMPROVED on Dicken's original. For in this movie they provide an explanation of Scrooge's turning into a miser, where that is not clear in Dicken's original
To improve on Dickens is a virtual impossibility and this is the only time it could even be argued
this is definitely one of the best films ever made but ive been having a hard time trying to watch it after the second viewing when i was a kid because of the creepy score, and the marley scene (that was a great scene though)
@GamingShadow01 the original score was lost in a warehouse fire.... and someone back in the 90s lovingly rescored it and recorded it .... I agree the score is creepy victorian but fits... the bassoon line is so catchy...and mournful, and the theme when Tiny Tim is staring into the toy shoppe window priceless...with the animated toys,, and of course the song Barbara Allan... great pieces....
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant film. Sim was the asolute best at this role, no one comes close to his performance. This film is a must to see at Christmas. Thankyou for posting this you are a gem
One of the reason's it is believed that Dicken's went to great lengths to be so descriptive in this story was because he in fact was being paid by the word. Therefore, more words, more money, kinda ironic I think.
@cubanut ~And you somehow hold him at fault for that? It isn't ironic, it is doing what will keep you from the poorhouse or debtor's prison. You can't blame Dickens for not willing it on himself. He was well aware of the harsh reality of impoverishment that blighted the urban landscapes. The life of the writer has never been an easy one. Let us allow the great Dickens his due.
after ms. dipler goes away... Scrooge goes back to his room mumbling then walks to the window,, this scene is deleted, and they start with scrooge lookin out the window
This is my favorite part of the movie, his acting is amazing, and I love the maid as well. Her reaction is priceless. Ya I agree bbasher79 that the colorized version of it is not good, black and white is the best. I could watch this all year round.
@bbasher79 its much better in colour. you can see it really clear and makes it look more fun and lively. and colour makes a black and white movie look younger. but this movie its self is muhc better in colour. you can barley make out the scenes in black and white and it scarier lol
this has always been my favorite christmas movie, despite its flaws. no one has ever done it better than alistair sim (tho many have tried) thanks for posting
I agree. Sim SMOKES in this role. It was meant for him. If you had to pick one guy for a Dickensian role of this magnitude, he was the prefect choice. AND he voiced the animated Chuck Jones version back in the early 70s which is short in length but haunting in it's presentation. See it on YouTube ASAP. It may be the last thing he ever did and what a way to go out.
Start watching this at the 3:12 mark and look in the bottom left hand corner of the mirror that Scrooge is looking in. You will see a stagehand look in the mirror from the background and then look again. I just heard about it on Wheel of Fortune.
my personal favourite is in chapter three (sorry, stave three) where he says nothing between a baby and a rhinoceros was likely to shock scrooge. magnificently surreal.
The best film about Scrooge ever made.Alistair Sim was the definitive Scrooge
