To me, it looks like a solid eastern grip forehand... Sadly it just doesn't look as nice as every other grip :(

Nah, he can actually get some speed on the forehand when he really tries. He's one of the best volleyers on the mens side. His groundstrokes usually just keep the ball in play until he gets up to net.

ya his groundstrokes are a pretty good model for beginners. very simple + (obv) has all the fundamentals.

It is a very old fashioned FH. Similar to Sampras's but more orthodox. I can't tell if it's eastern or semi-western but he doesn't angle his wrist much unlike Nadal who does to the extreme, making lots of people wrongly think his grip is full western.

Stepanek's grip looks to be one bevel short of an eastern (bevel 4 as opposed to bevel 3). This is a common semi-western adaptation, used also by Federer from strenuous positions on the court.

Stepanek's forehand suffers from insufficient body rotation and use of the supporting arm, but his shot-making ability and attacking game have allowed him to compensate throughout his career.
