Im Englischen wäre es mir noch am ehesten möglich als in anderen Sprachen, das Original zu lesen; so polyglott bin ich dann doch nicht.;-)

"Konventioneller" Erzähltes dürfte auch keinerlei Schwierigkeiten bereiten, aber Avantgardisten wie Joyce, Pynchon oder Wallace im Original zu lesen,

erschien mir immer grauenhaft - vllt zu unrecht. Einen ernsthaften Versuch wäre es schon wert, das stimmt. Und "Although of course you end up becoming yourself" hab ich mir gleich mal zugelegt. ;-)

Die Sichtweise des Verlags als "Unternehmen" und der deutsche Literaturbetrieb sind ein anderes (schmerzliches) Thema, auf das der leidige Begriff der Kulturindustrie wohl am besten zutrifft. Aber so ist es nun mal, und man kann nur ahnen, welche Dunkelziffer an Großtalenten (und respektive Übersetzern) deswegen bereits das Handtuch geworfen haben. Der einzige Trost ist, dass Bushidos Biographie sicher nicht in die Weltliteratur eingehen wird.

And even this looks a bit unpro, it is one of the best interviews of DFW I've seen so far.

@sdfgdsgfsdfs You have to read "Although you end up becoming yourself", it is a book-length interview with Wallace. But this here is probably the second best interview.

@antipersonDE : Thanks, I didn't know that one. It's quite a disgrace that American authors only get translated if there's some media hype about them (I'm German). I'd love to read e.g. Carole Maso but I don't dare to read it in English, to be honest.

@sdfgdsgfsdfs Nun, Verlage sind letztlich ja auch nur Unternehmen. Es wird durchaus ab und an auch etwas übersetzt, das keine große Beachtung erhalten hat, aber tatsächlich selten. Aber selbst ein Autor wie Wallace ist kein Erfolgsgarant, finanziell betrachtet. Was Maso betrifft, die ich selbst noch nie las. Kaufe Dir doch ein Buch und versuche Dich daran. Ich habe mir Infinite Jest auf Englisch gekauft, weil ich wusste, dass ich auch im Deutschen ein Wörterbuch benutzen müsste.

@sdfgdsgfsdfs Klar, der Lesevorgang wird dann anders sein als bei deutschen Büchern. Aber Du wirst gegen Mitte oder Ende merken, dass Du Dich beschleunigst und das alles anders wahrnimmst. Ich würde mir an Deiner Stelle wirklich nicht ein möglicherweise großartiges und für Dich persönlich auch wichtiges (einflussreiches) Buch entgehen lassen, weil die Sprache Probleme bereiten könnte.
