  • Grá é Dia duit Liam, bhí tú guth go mbeadh a dhéanamh carraigeacha chaillfidh a stróiceadh, beidh mé chailleann tú (God love you Liam, you had a voice that would make rocks shed a tear ,I miss you)

  • How could 3 people dislike this song, moving and sang by a legend, I wish I seen you live RIP liam your brothers and tommy

  • Liam, I will love you forever. This is such a wonderful song. You are missed.

  • jesus i miss and love u liam

  • This is such a beautiful piece. Such a shame Liam is no longer with us.

Thankfully, Liam's nephew, Finbarr, has continued breathing life into the same songs as his uncle, in The High Kings.

Bless them, and everyone else who has ever poured so much heart and soul into such beautiful music.

  • Music at it's purest form sung from a perfect voice form a master singer in the true tongue of Ireland.

Thank you Liam for all you gave us over the years. God bless and may you for ever rest in peace.

  • What a Legend of a man, ar dheis De go raibh a h-anam dilis.

  • amazing recording mate!

  • I would hum this song to my son, Liam, when he was a baby.

  • I totally respect Liam but Cathy Jordan' s version is better

  • Many thanks, machree01. I heard it first in '77 live by Boys of the Loch without words. It immediately became my most favorite melody, and I have been playing it on every instrument I can. "(I shall not) "Sell not virtue for money, nor Liberty for power" is the anthem of the story I have heard describing the meaning of an old, old tale: and one which says our first allegience is to the unseen.

  • are they singing Canadian??

  • @wisers001 They," he" , Liam Clancy , is singing in Irish Gaelic, a beautiful and haunting language in his beautiful and spectacular haunting voice,Albainn gu Brath

  • @Macangusagain - sorry to get back so late, but i must of been drinking the Wisers whiskey to much. I know what ya mean , just being a smart ass! I love his music for it reminds me of my fathers music from East coast of Newfoundland Canada. Many Irish folk settle there during the great potato famine and thats how i came to be.

  • @Macangusagain Don't you mean éirinn go brách, SIR?

lol, I'm not even actually Irish...

    but you're apparently Scottish...

  • @aragorn202 go bra go brea - lord its easy to see how we'd a civil fuckin war no? u say potatoes ill say pratai and lets not spill a fucking drink over it amigo!

  • @kaneda83 I was just commenting on how he talked about Irish Gaelic, immediately after which he said "Scotland forever," which I jokingly "corrected" to "Ireland forever." I don't really see anyone "spilling a fucking drink over it."

  • one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard,GOD BLESS YOU LIAM AND FOREVER SING A SONG TO JESUS.

  • Quel artiste! Quel trésor! Quelle beauté! Liam spoke directly to the heart and the soul. You feel his warmth. Thank you for posting it.

  • It's a gorgeous version of this beautiful song - simple, heartfelt and clearly the highest art.

  • I first heard this song from the High Kings.

While I think theirs is my favorite take on this song, Liam Clancy is no doubt an outstanding performer, and he and his companions here perform beautifully.

    *sniff*

  • go raibh maith agat liam ceol alainn

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

  • @ainso Amen.Tá brón orm ag eisteacht leis ach buíochas freisin.

  • Rest ye gentle, Liam og....craic is going to be 101 up there now !

  • Liam, old friend, give my greetings to Ronnie and Luke.....Like them, you'll live on forever in our hearts....

  • Scith i suaimhneas Liam, agus go raibh mile maith agat.

  • When I was young, my father used to play a record of the clancys. I remembered a song that was not in english, but nothing was lost in translation. This was the song I have thought about for years. 'By the second verse, I was unable to see my computer screen.

  • May your father rest in peace and continue his tradition put his record on for your kids now and then.

  • Fare thee well Liam, may you Rest in Peace.

May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

  • Na bac leis na sinti fada a chailin, taimid ag baite agus ba mhor linn ar aigine a chur os ar gchomhair. Ca bhfuil ar spriod agus ar Marseillaise anois, ca bhfuil ar folaimh, taimid ag caoineadh ar son nagClansaigh, Eirimid!

  • Liam Clancy - 2ú lá na Mean Fóbhair 1935 - 4ú lá na Nollaig 2009 Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

  • Liam Clancy died from interstitial lung disease on 4 December 2009, in Bon Secours Hospital in Cork, Ireland. RIP

  • good night Liam :(

  • Areir 's me 'g tearnnamh ar neoin

  • You forgot the fadas! ...jk

  • It's a timeless classic piece of poetry and enjoyed by all who appreciate good poetry in any language.

  • Poetry from the heart, class.

  • Brovo! A rare and wonderful artist.

  • know i know why christy moore was espoyerd by this man.he as a legend

  • Met Liam at Irish Fesitival in Canton last summer, he's lovely! Slan!

  • One of Ireland's great songs in Irish sung by one of our greatest singers.

This is a classic video, a masterclass on how to do it.

For me this is the equal of Mozart or Verdi at their best.

It eats my heart out in the same gut churning way.

    'Tis true, 'tis true...

  • Amadan..it isn't an introduction it's a poem by Austin Clarke. Any need to post such stupid, snide comments??

  • It was actually a bi-lingual TV show my ignorant friend.

  • I am a Scot ,but what an ignorant statement , and a smear on all of Ireland, for shame ,not for honour, Liam was a bilingual towering giant of an Irish performer, her greatest balladeeer by a country mile, and my favorite performer singer balladeer of all time. He gave us in both English and Gaelic a lifetime of memories and thrills just from listening to his melodious voice. Up Liam, either English or Irish !! Up Ireland !!! Down the bigots and know nothings of the world !!! Albainn Gu Brath

  • @TheHelen61 It was a poem retard not an introduction

  • Bob Dylan said " Liam Clancy is the best ballad singer I ever heard"

  • Tá an amhrán seo an-álainn.

  • nach bhfuil? amhran iontach.casadh nicolas tobin an t amhran sin go maith fresain,

  • I am an Indian, but when I heard this song I am so convinced that I must have been Irish at some point in time ! This ballad by Liam Clancy is so hauntingly beautiful and evokes emotions that I have never encountered before !

  • How Lovely...

  • This is my all-time favourite song in any language. I don't need to understand the lyrics. The performance of the great Liam and the accompanying musicians says it all. BREATH-TAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • has liamm ever made a somd with the dubs ?

  • Simply the finest ballad singer in my lifetime !!!! Eirinn Gu Brath agus Albainn Gu brath

  • I'm not Irish, but I know about the Clancy Bros.(and Liam Clancy),and this song just makes me so emotional...

  • Absolutely Lovely. I grew up with this music as a child. 5 *'s.

  • How I LOVE Liam Clancy!

  • The Clancy Bros., sans the younger Liam, came to America after WWII. They acted in NYC when they could, and at least one of them got pretty regular work. But they enjoyed singing in the pubs at night, and they captured good audiences. Tommy Makem came to America, sang with them, and when injured at work, suggested they record an album together. The rest is history. Liam Clancy came to America and sang with his brothers, but he did well on his own.

  • Love that man!!Lol absolute legend!!

  • I have read that both Liam Clancey and Tommy Makem went to the USA with the intention of becoming famous actors. And although they failed in that respect, the acting talent shone through in their performances.

  • It's to my understanding that Paddy, Tom Clancy and Makem came first, failed and Liam came later.

  • What a genius, what a voice. Everytime I hear this man sing its brilliant, the delivery of each word is perfect. 'Memoirs of an Irish Troupador' is a great old read. My personal favourite is his version of 'The Dutchman', beautiful. Fair play Liam.

  • You don't know what your talking about Mcgurk..It was the Wolfetones who brought this song to the masses.........Eejit

  • Both versions the Irish language version with Liam and Brians Enlish language translations are magic. Both of these men are national treasures>

  • Agreed!

  • Music & musicians are odd creatures. There is a level of dedication, passion, & obsession that goes into each time you are in front of people and play YOUR music for them to hear. It is not an easy thing to put yourself out there for someone and then hear them critique your sound. You have to put everything that you have into it or it will not work. Clancy clearly does that here and so many more songs that he sings. It is simply beautiful from beginning of the story to the last note. Amazing.

  • no one can tell the story through song n verse like him. Feel honoured to see his face expressing the emotion.

  • Like good wine this song gets better and better, ageless beauty.

  • The pairing of this song with "The Planter's Daughter" is nothing less than perfection, if perfection is ever a term to sue with music. I choreographed a dance to this at school a couple of years ago, and got very strong responses-first time most of the audience had ever heard any Gaelic, and this crowd of American teenagers and their parents really loved it.

I love the instrumentals on this too.

  • Mo cheol thu, a Liam *****

  • one of the few songs that brings out the emotional purity and spirituality of the Irish language.

  • Typical of the 'hypocritical' Wolfe Tones to record the beautiful piece of irish music in English. Liam Clancy always done it best.

  • A step ABOVE perfection...

  • i forget which cd this is on, but there is fantastic version of this on i think a double disc set of tommy makem and the clancy bros/ this is awesome. thanks for posting.

  • Classic mo chara

  • Where did ya geet this fantastic

  • My Uncle recorded many years ago, i think it was a St. Patricks Day. but a great song.

  • You were right Liam does abeautiful version in gaelic which makes it even more beautiful,

    many thanks Machree01 fiddleyd

  • This is from our ancient gaelic heritage,Liam Clancy does this beautiful air full justice, thr programme was shown on RTE Irish TV some years ago.

This by far surpasses the Wolfe Tones english translation. Thank you Declan.

  • 'But For Ireland I'd not Tell Her Name'

What a beautiful song and singer Liam is'

The strange thing is, when the Wolfe Tones recorded this song in English they also used a Cello.

  • That's awesome! What's this from?
