  • When I hear him play Chopin, in my mind I don't distinguish between the two.. it's as if he's being Chopin and playing it the way it's meant to be played. That is a wonderful, powerful thing.

  • pieknie!!!

  • beautiful serene music and images of Amsterdam

  • Rest in peace, Vitaly Margulis, born in Kharkiv, 16 April 1928, died in Los Angeles, 29 May 2011.

  • @JureGorucan On my birthday...

  • Words can't describe the beauty of his playing here. If you read along with the score, he follows it faithfully, while adding his own touch.

  • How wonderful to see Chopin's music teamed with scenes of Amsterdam. I lived in that beautiful city for almost three years in the Seventies. But the pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy is the true Master of Chopin. As with Hendrix, there is no separation between him and the music and his instrument.

  • secret genius or non genius who wanted maintain that in secret? is the worst rendition of this nocturne... banal and metronomic, fake and without soul

  • @rolipoli I'd hardly call it the worst, but it's missing quite a bit.

  • Margulis is a godgift pianist and musician! This nocturne is the proof...

  • no dynamics at all either... this person is ignoring a lot of the score, not even really making an original interpretation, which I wouldn't mind even if it diverged from what the score said. it is very 'white' sounding to me.

  • @ReturnOfTheStienway Goddammit, forget the score for once. Enjoy the music.

  • how is this "secret genius' ?

  • @ReturnOfTheStienway I completely agree with you. This interpretation is almost mawkish, like he just "doesn't get it" somehow. The rubato sounds just like the sort that Chopin was known to despise when it was applied to his music. On the other hand, Martha Argerich's version never fails to send chills down my spine, and no other interpretations that I've heard can even begin to compare.

  • Seeing him this afternoon ^^

  • it's quite close to that ideal and non-existent (?) 27-2 chopin. thank you.

  • What a wonderful performance. Margulis really knows how (and where) to pull the tempo and the sync (and swym) between the hands.

  • Indeed a "secret genius"! What a great performance and wonderful to see the well known place in Amsterdam, although I am from Rotterdam :-)

  • Thank you for this illuminating post! Beautiful performance. And always a treat to see Amsterdam for those of us with dear ones

in The Netherlands. I've added this to my Travelogue Videos playlist as well. Best wishes from South Florida. ~Terry

  • Goede pianist! Is dat de Langestraat?

  • 4:07

  • This is truly an amazing find. He is truly a great artist. There is a simplicity and a directness to his playing that is powerfully appealing.

  • Pieter de Rooij... amai... ook een nederlander... prachtig stuk is dit...

  • Belíssimo!!!!

    Bravo!!!!

  • PRECIOSO!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is one of the best Op. 62's I've heard so far on YT. Brava!

  • non è l'interpretazione migliore, che resta quella di Lipatti. Margulis manca un po' di elasticità e di eleganza.

  • I currently study with Dr. Margulis and the guy is so amazing. He is one of the best pianists in the world. The amount of detail that he pays to each tone is unbelievably high. Just watching him play passages that I have troubles with during lessons just makes my heart melt.

I have several of his Scriabin/Chopin/Mussorgsky CDs and they are my favorites above any of the well-known artists.

This is a man that does not make any compromises for his music.

  • Absolutely the best

  • veramente buono! compimenti! Grazie Forever

  • Very -very nice- Thanks ForeverIsis !

  • es precioso- Gracias ForeverIsis

  • Bravo!!!

  • Absolutely ...a dream!

    Pure velours!

    Ankhsnammon

  • english version >>> this pianist is fantastic... perhaps i hv'nt heard a nocturne as this...unbelievable....

  • Mio Dio!!! questo pianista non lo conoscevo... E' sublime sublime.... !!!!! come possibile che non sia famoso... forse il più bel notturno che abbia sentito....

  • Lang Lang and Chopin??????????Only deaf person can say that.

  • This is one of the best recordings out there of this Nocturne, in my opinion. I was also lucky to study with Margulis about 15 years ago and learned so much from him.

  • Nice! My piano professor at UCLA :)

  • Have you heard Lang Lang's version of this nocturne? I think it's better, especially when you don't look at the video but just listen it.

  • My goodness do you have ears?

  • it supposed to be a comment on the lang lang comment...

  • Yes, they are absolutely perfect- no holes!

  • One thousand time better than Pollini, no doubt from me.

  • Great pianist. His versions of these (and other ones, as Kreisleriana, or Scriabin) pieces are among my absolute favourite. A real true master.

  • He´s also a very fine writer. I´ve read his books and his stories are very funny and interesting. He must be quite a character.

  • waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw

  • e x t r a o r d i n a i r e !!

  • Ecoutez au plus vite la barcarolle de Rachmaninoff op.10 n°3 par ce pianiste!!!!

  • Yes! This is indeed a rare find. This is my Favorite Chopin Nocturne! All that is beautiful in the world is captured in this piece.

  • There is nobody like him...is the best artist on youtube!can you hear his legato?my God,is amazing!thanks for posting it,I believe in God listening this...

  • @ivesklein ...And POOF! When it's done, you're back to your good ol' Anarchistic Punky self! =D

  • @ivesklein believe me, I've seen one of his very last recitals, very intimite, Grieg Lyrische Stücke, you cannot imagine which heavenly light he shined upon us!

  • This is great!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for this. I too have admired Margulis for many years. His Scriabin 3rd Sonatat is extraordinarily convincing. He organizes the phrases uniquely, bunching the decorative notes into components that fit within their respective measures with distinctive logic. Wonderful, thanks.

  • Like it very much! Chopin is manytimes uncomprehensible because it sounds so romantic to be - his music - but it is NOT! Full of emotions, bitterness, harm, scaring and doubts...this is a reason I like his music so much. And this interpretation is much than VERY GOOD. Do you know, Peter, a french film about Chopin last summer in France? Look at it, it´s very nice! Natali

  • Excellent stuff. I'll have to look out for his other recordings.

  • Ah! I believe I have discerned the explanation to such unearthly beauty: Mr. Margulis is playing on a "magic piano", isn't he? ;)

Pieter, this was a superb video in every way. 5*s and thank you so much for posting it.

  • isnt he vitalij kuprij?
