The most overrated baritone of the 20th century accompanied by the loudest and most overrated accompanist of them all, if I am not mistaken - Gerald Moore. Talk about plastic music, plastic playing, no voice, no passion. What happened to music?
@VivaRenata Wow I'm sorry, I understand that there are many baritones that have better technique and all, but you sound like such an elitist snob. You would be a total buzz kill to hang out with....
@TheClevelandSteamer You misunderstood me - I'm not talking about technique at all. Fischer-Dieskau has fine technique but a voice that lacks passion, personality and soul. Find Pierre Fournier's rendition of this song on Youtube and just compare. And I am not a buzz kill, but I'm sure you wouldn't want to hang out with me anyway.
Just do it better! I cannot think of a version with more passion, technique and a better accompanist than Gerald Moore and DFD. Just listen to the phrasing and all. That's not achieved until now. Many singers try to copy DFD but they all fail!
When he was turned on DFD was electric...when not dead as a doornail. This is one of those moments when he is at his best. He sounds like a natural singer, neither operatic or artsy-fartsy. He is direct and it is enough. God did not gift himwith an opulent sound, but when he sings like this it does not matter. It does not happen often...but this is the proof.
Even in opera I prefere DFD to Hotter. Hotter is an excellent opera baritone. As it comes to diction Hotter lacks a bit compared to DFD. Maybe it's a little unfair but so is life ... (The better is the enemy of the good!)
I don't think he's so young here. I have another recording of him singing it in a higher key - same key as Prey in the 1975 video. Probably in the original D.
@madskier50 yes, he is young (in the 1950 s) you can tell from the hair style. it is long and swept back. as he got older, he adopted a much shorter hair style (and more attractive if i might say so) that s how he looked when i saw him in the 60 s and 70 s.
cleanest version of this song that I've heard on YT, I appreciate the upload :)

@deutschefach So true... I love the way you put that on words.... DFD has so much in sense of taste to teach us!!!

Hans Hotter was a better opera singer but not in the same league with DFD as far as lieder are concerned...

Three high-quality greats: The song An Die Musik, the composer Schubert, the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.

@davecotuit Impossible to say. I'm sure there were quite a few good ones that burned to death in Dresden, and froze to death in Stalingrad.

@davecotuit i m not sure of this at all. but i am sure you are not an unmitigated lover of german art.
