- the Autobahnen were built with credit, contributing to Germany's indebtedness which became one of the causes of the war,

- the Autobahn was not Hitler's idea, some of these had been planned under the Brüning government.

Actually plans for the Autobahn were made during the Weimar Republic already, and in 1931 the first real stretch between Cologne and Bonn. Hitler wasn't chancellor until 1933. In the 1920's and the Depression there wasn't enough money to build all those planned Autobahns, and very little was made during Hitler's reign. The war halted all further progress.

Btw, the Italians had the Autostrada in 1925. The first part Autostrada de Laghi still exists today.

Ah, the Autobahns, massive work projects, just like the Pyramids, or the massive tracts of forests cleared for fields in the American South by slavery. You don't see all the people who were worked to death, only the silent unspeaking product afterwards. Men beseached Hitler about the horrible conditions on these projects, only to have it fall upon deaf ears. Nazis watned super highways for rapid deployment of their armies to any point of the empire. Same reason Einsenhower freeways got built.

Building the Autobahn was a mass project to get hundreds of thousands of unemployed men back to work. It was manual labor on a huge scale. America learned from Adolf that deficit spending was the way out of mass unemployment. Consequently, the USA launched its own make-work projects, like the building of the Hoover Dam. Adolf was no fool, despite the depiction of him by detractors and propagandists.

Depending on whether you're talking about Russian camps or just German camps that were seized by the Russians also makes a difference. We may not be contradicting each other. @AndYourMomIsBoDerek Well actually, it was Hjalmar Schacht, the Minister of Finance who had the glorious idea of the autobahn. Not Hitler. In fact Schacht was something of a pro-jew. Like any good nazi of the time he disliked them, but he created a program which allowed, for a fee, jews to move out of germany and into palestine (i think it was palestine anyway, might've been elsewhere). This program saved 170,000 lives.
