@theachtungtree I see where you're coming from, and although that could be said for a lot of bands, I don't feel the same about Soundgarden. I think a different singer would've definitely given their music a different feel (like what Cornell did for Tom Morello's music compared to Zack de la Rocha's approach) but to claim that the Soundgarden guys wrote "average metal" isn't true. A lot of their songs were written so well that almost anyone could've stepped in and still made it to the radio.
@theachtungtree Okay, so why state, "...they would totally sound just like any otehr average metal band" if you don't think they're a metal band in the first place? I thought your initial post was stating your opinion that Cornell was the main reason they achieved their level of popularity, not debating whether they were considered alternative rock or metal.
@DottyLomax just a few....small amount of songs that sounded different...the rest was pretty much the same generic metal sound over and over and over again...slow and fast...it doesnt requires to be a genious to figure that shit out, theyre definetely NOT groundbreaking imo....for instance take a peek at badmotorfinger and tell me straight to my face that it isnt the same metal sound from the get go...touche
@theachtungtree Badmotorfinger was only a couple of years into the band's existence, so they were obviously still feeling their way around in the dark, developing their style. Basing your opinion of them solely on that one album is like summing up Pink Floyd by their time with Syd Barrett - good, but clearly not as good as what would come afterward.
Bottom line is I think they were a great band and Cornell's vocals were the icing on the cake. That's just my opinion, so chill out.
@DottyLomax yeah..."developing their sound", more like ripping the shit out of the first sabbath-free-purple records, read this closer you dickhole: THEY AREN'T GROUNDBREAKING, not today, not yesterday...never...ever and yeah, their last record wasn't a leap...few touches here and there but still the same shit...I KNOW MY SHIT, i know all about em dipshit...but i really agree on the vocals and the sound, great though repetitive imo
this sounds AMAZING

I love soundgarden and Chris Cornell, but his voice sounds awful nowadays.

@deekusquizinanas He's abused his voice a lot over the years. I hope he is working with coaches so he can get back what he had.
Though I still enjoy his singing.
