This is a masterpeace!! I love it! You have to sing absolutely correct in order to do this! Respect!
It really pisses me off more than anything when people think the synths she put on her voice are meant to be autontune. It's not, it's added because it's art.
@INF3darkgreen It's actually a very large amount like autotune, it automatically tunes an input into the note of a selected (usually with a keyboard) and layers every note selected it is called a vocoder. I'm not saying she doesn't have a beautiful voice but this song is definitely not one that should be put on live, more of a studio song.
IT'S A VOCODER. SERIOUSLY. CAN EVERYONE PLEASE LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A VOCODER AND AUTO-TUNE. A VOCODER IS A SYNTHESISER THAT PRODUCES PITCH FROM AN AUDIO INPUT. AUTO-TUNE IS PITCH CORRECTION. IMOGEN HEAP IS QUITE CLEARLY USING THE PIANO AS A VOCODER TO BE ABLE TO HARMONISE WITH HERSELF. YOU CAN HEAR THE ORIGINAL, UN-PITCH-SHIFTED AUDIO OVER THE TOP OF THE VOCODER.
Now that's been cleared up, can we talk about how beautiful this song and performance is.
My second cousin went to Burning Man and because of that I watched a series of Burning Man YouTubes and because of that I heard this song in the background of a Tiesto remix and tracked it down to here. Hahahaha, It's def not Jason Derulo's song. "Whatcha Say" is the debut single by American recording artist Jason Derülo. It was produced by J. R. Rotem with additional production by German producer Fuego and samples the song "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap.
@wdsa8d No learn to read, I never said that. What I'm tired of is people pandering to their own superiority in musical taste. Your comment seemed utterly random & out of place. Twilight & lady gaga? the fuck?
@wdsa8d it's actually awesome cuz underground is really underground...it's like being a beatles fan but there's no beatlemania. just you and the artist.
Somebody said that this song is about nazis, that's just wrong. What eyentine said is really close to the "official truth". It's about the searationof her parents, as far as i remember she was a child then, for example the crop circles in the carpet are marks leaved by the removed furniture. And its a fact, it is stated by Imogen Hea herself that this is what the song is about.
The only thanks I think Jason Derulo and his use of her song deserve is the fact that more people now know about Imogen Heap and her immense amount of talent.
@DjTommyKx See where you're coming from, but as for the autotune thing. He quite obviously does use alot of autotune.....but did you even listen to this video? Without the effect on her voice....this would sound pretty damn dull too....everyone uses technology to improve their music.
@jerichok You think this would be dull? Hmmm. Also it's not an effect on her voice as such, she's using a vocoder to harmonise with her. You can still hear her own voice singing the lead.
@CrinkleCutBeatroot It's something that add's an effect to her voice. It's not a natural human voice all on it's own is it? And it would be pretty dull on it's own. I like it as it's done in the video mind.
@jerichok first off, not everyone uses vocal improvement effects. It's called actual talent. Even with actual talent, doesn't mean the singer will always be spot on. It's just like any other instrument, except that perfection is even more tricky. Imogen does not use autotune. There are some key things to look for with autotune use that aren't there in her voice(recorded or not). As for this video, it's not just an effect. She's taking her voice and putting it through notes that she's playing
@Cestio This is a fairly old video, at the very least two years, possibly up to five - I saw her live not long ago, and trust me, she is an experienced performer nowadays, and she is brilliant!!! If you haven't seen footage of her at Glastonbury 2010, definitely give it a watch - amazing!
@Cestio This is a very old performance, she can definitely hit those high notes now. If you've watched her recent performances of this song and others, she has no problem of hitting them anymore.
Okay, people, we all know it's her original song, but do you really have to smack other people's taste in music? Saying your opinion is one thing "I don't like rap. I think it sucks" Fine. But calling people who listen to it "Rap fucks?" Is this really how we're raised as humans? We are stuck here on this earth, all wrapped up around wars and tragedy and shit, and you don't even have the courtesy to not add to the horribleness that causes them? If that's it, then I don't think we deserve music.
@TheMolt1 This was how i was raised. And i couldnt give a damn. The human race is a disgrace, every little person on this planet is a disgrace in its own. And quite frankly i couldnt care less. There is no such thing as perfection, therefore causing the horribleness in the world. Your points are invalid, although you are correct when you say we dont deserve music, because we dont.
@aamh916 Completely respectable reply. I guess you're right; there's no point in digging up hope for this species. I suppose I knew it all along, but I just didn't want to admit it.
@TheMolt1 The anonymity of the internet gives people "special powers" to call anyone anything they want... I would love to hear more about how you think we don't deserve music, though! It's sort of an inalienable right when it comes to being human, I think... Yes, it certainly is this glorious thing, but the world's imperfect; it's bound to be taken advantage of.
@Kelavmeister The same applies to me. In real life, I would never scold someone I haven't met for disgracing music so. That's a thing I'd only have the balls to do online. As far as the fact that we don't deserve music as humans, I don't think we really deserve much in the way of anything. Now, I don't want to get into a religious debate (God knows there's enough of THAT on irrelevant YouTube videos) but I believe that humanity is sinful and doesn't deserve anything it has been given. Just me.
@TheMolt1 Well, if you put it that way then I guess you could justify it! haha I'm an atheist, so I tend to see music as a sort of more natural result of evolved social skills... I think it's quite wonderful that animals alike have some form or other of music, not just humans! REGARDLESS, Imogen Heap is a gem in sea of overproduced music today... A little something to be thankful for :)
@Kelavmeister Oh, haha! See, I alse believe animals are in the same boat as humans; they don't deserve anything either! XD Sorry, I should stop talking. Yes. Imogen Heap is beautiful, and beauifully talented, and I think it sucks the way people would rather argue about things than listen to her sing. So, let's just stop talking and listen to her. Yawp. Good stuff.
@TheMolt1 Dude you must be so sad if you live believing that you don't deserve anything because of your evil god. The cult has really got to you my friend.
@andrewkeen24 Just because we aren't deserving of something doesn't mean we won't ever have it. I have a good life; I just had to make the right decisions to get it. Whether God is in your equation or not, you can achieve whatever you want in this life if you just pursue it.
@andrewkeen24 Then what a wonderful delusion I have, to know that, no matter what I may do, good or bad, I have someone who loved me enough to sacrifice all He had for me. But, I know you aren't going to want to listen to this. It's too bad, though. Having hope is a good thing, I say!
How can people filled with such hate & listen & love her. I listen 2 all music and this is one of my all time favorite songs. Fuck Rap is rude and ignorant.
She had 2 give those "rap fucks" permission 2 cover her song.. ever think about that?
At first I was underwhelmed. But...if you look, there are no 'good' covers of this song, because using a vocoder like this is EXTREMELY HARD. No one can copy this. Imogen Heap, this is fucking amazing.
Finding it pretty hard to believe that all the people on here saying "Derulo stole this" have legally downloaded every one of Imogen's songs they have on their iPod/MP3... Unless you can say you've purchased her music legally, you're stealing a whole lot more from one of our generation's musical genius' that Jason Derulo did.. Atleast he paid and supported her..
Can't we stop bickering about the one hit wonder who took a sample and concentrate on the fact that Imogen Heap actually put together a really experimental and awesome track? I mean, what's up with that?
lol there has to be no discussion about who made the song first. jason derulo just took the "watcha say" sample and put it into his song. simple as it can be ;)
@VadersRevenge This song, like the title says (Hide and Seek) seems to be about a back and forth thing between two people who may have loved each other or perhaps one claimed to love the other but really did not.. She seems jaded by the behaviour of the other person...but then perhaps becomes fed up ..and doesn't want to take, presumably, his excuses and what if's (ransom notes keep falling out your mouth). But that's just my interperation, without having actually seen the lyrics! JUST SAYN
@PowerHouseNet Well you gotta be fucking stupid to not guess that her's is the original lol. Don't forget that 90 percent of our race is dumb enough to believe in a god.
1st) Thumbs up if you found and love Imogen Heap thanks to Jason Derulo. I did, and have BOTH songs on my iPod. 2nd) She is a SHE, I don't get the confusion on that point. Either way, I STRONGLY encourage you to check out her other songs. I haven't heard one that I didn't like from the moment I hit play.
I miss the times when Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek video had only a lil' less of 80K views and all the comments doesn't have Jason Derulo's name on it. It was more peaceful then. Comments were all praises and the indie community loved it. *sighs* Gone were the days. Derulo ruined it. Ruined a great piece of art.
One more thing, I really hate it when mainstream fans says "Heap stole this from Derulo!" Ohhh lorrrr! Pisses the hell out of me!
@aamh916 except Jason Derulo is an R&B artist lol. besides. even if someone samples a song, they have to get permission from that artist. the Sampler likes that persons music, and the other artist supports the one who wants to use their material. and that song put a lot of people who may not have heard of Imogen Heap on to her music. i hate how mainstream fans, mess everything up and get people like me, who are hip-hop heads but still listen to all types of music, labeled as "raptards".
@aamh916 hahaha yeah dude plus look when this was posted... like the rap song came out like a year or so later at least... they probably used this for that song.. shes way better though
she is amazingly expressive

@DennisBastian Writing in capitals isn't shouting. It's writing in capitals.
@blackcheetor And on her studio recording she uses a harmonizer, but they're too difficult to use live, so here she is using a vocoder actually.

Good stuff.
TheMolt1 8 months ago
@TheMolt1 Dude you must be so sad if you live believing that you don't deserve anything because of your evil god. The cult has really got to you my friend.
andrewkeen24 6 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Just because we aren't deserving of something doesn't mean we won't ever have it. I have a good life; I just had to make the right decisions to get it. Whether God is in your equation or not, you can achieve whatever you want in this life if you just pursue it.
TheMolt1 6 months ago
@TheMolt1 Everything you say is true but introducing God into the equation will just help you achieve a state of delusion.
andrewkeen24 6 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Then what a wonderful delusion I have, to know that, no matter what I may do, good or bad, I have someone who loved me enough to sacrifice all He had for me. But, I know you aren't going to want to listen to this. It's too bad, though. Having hope is a good thing, I say!
TheMolt1 6 months ago
@TheMolt1 A wonderful delusion it may be, but you're still plain and simple crazy.
andrewkeen24 6 months ago
@andrewkeen24 Yawp! ^^
TheMolt1 6 months ago
@TheMolt1 I can think of no worse delusion.

@iAmTheYan You can believe whatever delusion you want. I have no right to try to stop you.

At first I was underwhelmed. But...if you look, there are no 'good' covers of this song, because using a vocoder like this is EXTREMELY HARD. No one can copy this. Imogen Heap, this is fucking amazing.

@catrinvincent um Ariana Grande covered it and it sounds awesome :)

Correction: Only a rapper could take 1 line from an artistic milestone & turn it into another excuse for "gettin sum"..

I mean, what's up with that?

lol there has to be no discussion about who made the song first. jason derulo just took the "watcha say" sample and put it into his song. simple as it can be ;)

what is this song about?
VadersRevenge 10 months ago
@VadersRevenge This song, like the title says (Hide and Seek) seems to be about a back and forth thing between two people who may have loved each other or perhaps one claimed to love the other but really did not.. She seems jaded by the behaviour of the other person...but then perhaps becomes fed up ..and doesn't want to take, presumably, his excuses and what if's (ransom notes keep falling out your mouth). But that's just my interperation, without having actually seen the lyrics! JUST SAYN

Why all the hate on such a beautiful song?
deanodynamo 10 months ago
I miss the times when Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek video had only a lil' less of 80K views and all the comments doesn't have Jason Derulo's name on it. It was more peaceful then. Comments were all praises and the indie community loved it. *sighs* Gone were the days. Derulo ruined it. Ruined a great piece of art.
One more thing, I really hate it when mainstream fans says "Heap stole this from Derulo!" Ohhh lorrrr! Pisses the hell out of me!

Imogen heap is amazing. I always start listening to her songs when I am thinking, and I always come out with the answer :) Go Imogen!!!

Wow all of the little raptards are saying that Imogen Heap covered Jason. Well get your shit straight. Who the fuck was born first?
Just because rapfucks like to cover song and claim the song as its own doesnt mean its originally theirs. Pisses me the FUCK off.
aamh916 11 months ago 128
@aamh916 except Jason Derulo is an R&B artist lol. besides. even if someone samples a song, they have to get permission from that artist. the Sampler likes that persons music, and the other artist supports the one who wants to use their material. and that song put a lot of people who may not have heard of Imogen Heap on to her music. i hate how mainstream fans, mess everything up and get people like me, who are hip-hop heads but still listen to all types of music, labeled as "raptards".
THEjamalsykes 9 months ago 3
@aamh916 wow some people are really stupid i mean seriously, this songs awesome, and their dumb for thinking that she stole it
woody3757 9 months ago
@woody3757 I Agree. Jason ruined it. Fer real.
aamh916 9 months ago 4
@aamh916 hahaha yeah dude plus look when this was posted... like the rap song came out like a year or so later at least... they probably used this for that song.. shes way better though
masterdrummer19 8 months ago
@masterdrummer19 Ya. I guess the rap guy bought it from her. She made a HUGE mistake giving up her own lyrics.
