Just saw this film at The LIAF, I think you guys did a really good job. Visually it was stunning (especially the scene with the fish and when they see their "mother") and you showed an empathy for the characters which is so important when dealing with such a sensitive subject. I look forward to seeing more from you all. Good luck with the future :)
What a disrespectful people who made this, why they choose this topic??? where is the respect for all the people around the world who really live whit this problem because of the Chernobyl disgrace. Isn't funny to make a cartoon exposing this situation..... Use your creativity for some other things....
@anima2221 ukrainian, some of the kids are natives, others learned so it's got a 'funny' accent according to ukrainians. It was recorded in paris in very amateurish conditions, which is why the sound quality isn't that great.
@ANotherGenIe There's not really a meaning, it's just about kids who live in the chernobyl. I wasn't alive then... :P I'm a tween, but that's besides the point. I know about it cuz mah dad told me about it. :3
yeah yeah, spoken as if you knew me very well. just because they made that movie doesn't mean i have to like it. i know for a fact what huge work cgi plus story in a small team is, but i still think it's bad and there was too little work on the "story". but i also think the creators won't give two shits about me not liking it. they're no children and i don't have to sit here and go like: "ooooh, you made such a great thing there! clap clap, points for effort"
seriously, fuck this film. it runs purely on this little layer of "shock value" and a pseudo-message, while the animation is like watching a game intro from 2005. maybe you try it with a real idea next time... go take your poser-animated freakshow and shove it in the trash. the only superpowers you get from radiation is coughing up your lungs and dying a slow and painful death. how you could score any prizes with this mess is beyond me.
Shock value? Things lose their shock value after 25 years. & everyone who knew anything about Chernobyl knew about the Cherno Kids long before this film was made. It IS good quality. It DOES have a story. Maybe your problem is that you have no sympathy for their point of view or you selfishly believe that people not from the countries effected have no right to express their feelings about it. Which is just mentally unstable. They have meds for that now, ya know.
I don't see how this is any different from the super heroes created in the 50's & 60's. Yes it's modern, but that's it. Honestly people that are insulted feel like it's a "too soon" scenario? It's fantasy based off of reality, too bad it hits too close to home for some. I find it fascinating.
Too much attention to Chornobyl. Kids in Ukraine have other problems, than reactor. But anyway, thank you for this video - it shows that youth from Western world have no clue what is Ukraine and what is Chornobyl. You're living in the world of assumptions and stereotypes, folks.
What do you mean, "too much attention to Chernobyl"? You think there has been too much focus on Chernobyl so no one should ever write about it, make films about it, or mention it at all ever again? Besides, if your subject is the Cherno Kids it wouldn't make any sense at all to reference something that has nothing to do with it. Plus it would result in a failing grade. & while bordering countries were affected, why wouldn't reactor #4 be the focus? It's a short, not a documentary.
I suspect some subtleties may be lost in translation, but in response to yureeka - my interpretation is that the children must live in an orphanage. They've grown to consider the Chernobyl reactor as their "mother" as they are aware of their deformities and associate them with it. They imagine the whole reactor core battle scenario (which explains the change in animation style, and the super-hero powers). Obviously the children are expressing normal childhood frustrations with controlling adult
@evinmanp spot on. Sorry if it isn't more obvious. Also, this short is about resilience, the way (mostly) children fight back after a traumatic experience, in our case, turning their handicap and lives into a childhood fantasy. And yeah, it's not in everyone's taste, but it was a _student_ film, no more, no less.
@chernokids Guys I hope you passed with an A and a thousand stars, this is effing amazing, the visuals and the scenario, it's just so subtle and beautiful. One of the most arresting films I've seen lately. Please pass my kudos to everyone involved.
@TheNatashko Seriously, this is a beautiful short movie. It looks great, but not only that, the story is amazing. How deep is goes. Read evinmanp's comment. You'll get to understand some more. What happened was terrible, and eventhough stuff like this hasn't happened ( 10 eyes and 2 heads .. ), the stuff that has really happened is really bad. If you don't understand, then you have a problem and i'm very sorry that you are unable to understand these things.
@marlow125 I live in Kiev, it is 135 km from Chernobyl. I was born in 1986 - the year when it has happened. Do you really think I do not understand? The real Chernobyl kids do have problems, but these are not 10 eyes or smth. These are blood cancer, immunity diseases etc. They look like normal kids, but they suffer a lot. Imagine how painful could be this short for them!
@marlow125How easy is to earn a cheap popularity by making any kind of shit about the global problematic topic. Good for creators. But from the point of view of the Chernobyl theme this is a true bullshit.
I plan to ask someone from Kiev that clearly remembers the Cherny disaster & has raised much awareness about it if this offends her as well. Regardless of her answer, I would like to point out now that you should reconsider your perspective on this short film as it helps to raise awareness. & anything that raises awareness of any of the tragedies that occurred as a result of Chernobyl...
...will result in some people donating or trying to help in some way the people still affected by it & the people that remained in or returned to Wolves Land despite the likelihood that it would make them sick. This film struck me more as a tribute or memorial. Certainly nothing negative or offensive. It reveals to people the Cherno Kids' point of view, the most innocent of the victims.
@AlterDimensions 'Anything to raise awareness' - ? WTF is that? This cartoon does not evoke the feelings that local people had and have still! Ugly smile of Bosch...
Can someone elaborate on how they interpreted this film? I find it beautiful and very interesting to watch -- but I'm not sure if I understand all of the symbolism.
What does the hallucinogenic fish represent?
does this film mean that even something destructive can produce some form of innocent life? Do the children represent nature taking back Chernobyl, despite physical barriers?
@yureeka I tnx the fushes rapresent ...how I'm can sai it? the fushes on the plant are "real ","alive" because they natural habitat (the childrens I mean) is this "nuclear world" the dead fish olso can be the way they see our world ... I'm don't know
Few years ago I draw something like this, kids with gas mask in a Pre-Chernobyl disaster and Post-Chernobyl disaster of background and call it Chernobyl Kids, it's was inspired in a tv documentary of this place, I really liked this video! nice job!
offensive cartoon - french have no clue whatsoever happened and its place in common history of Ukrainian history! Terrible video
