It's so clever how they have incorporated all the different interpretations of Hamlet & Gertrude's relationship into one seamless blur! It makes everyone's interpretation different, which is wonderful. As to settle a previous argument, many critics have debated the question of whether Hamlet is, in fact, in love with his mother, and there is some evidence to support it, should you look deep enough.
I just love how he says "Good night mother!" As he casually drags a body out. Gotta love Hamlet <3 And even more so David Tennant for playing him so brilliantly : )
From 0:42-1:00 was the sexiest crying I´ve ever seen Tennant do!! omg I felt both so sad and turned on by it, he sounded so beautiful when he teared up *sigh*
What I love about this scene is Gertrude laughing at how Hamlet says goodnight, which turns immediately to tears. Possibly as she remembers that it's a sign of his 'madness'/madness. Awesomely done.
@popcantoo That's only one perception. He could be pretending, and probably was. Or he was only pretending in certain points. Could have had delusions of the ghost in this scene, because before, others saw the ghost, but here only Hamlet sees it. It's all perception. Still, it's never really been said outright that he's pretending. Could even be a self-fulfilling prophecy XD
"I'll lug the guts into the neighbor room. Night mother!" I LOVE THIS SCENE! It's so serious and beautiful and then Hamlet yells goodnight to his mother as he disposes of a body. Yes yes, nothing new do this all the time. XD
Of course I adore DT as Hamlet; a brilliant, brilliant performance. But I have to give credit to Penny Downie (sp?) as well for her acting in this scene. The issue of incestuous relations and murder aside, you can totally tell that she's heartbroken over the fact that her son has (apparently) gone insane. It's a true mother's performance, sorrowful over how far her child has fallen.
this what happens when you pretend to be mad I guess, people actually believe you are, and then when you tell them you arent really mad they just think you completely lost it
It will be aired on PBS Wednesday, April 28 at 8 pm. Check your local listings. Furthermore, Amazon is taking pre-orders for its May 4 release in the US.
all these lil things that remind u of the doctor r because they're obviously habits of his own that he puts into multiple characters he portrays because remember the doctor changes depending on who's portraying him so these aren't doctor qualities just DT qualities
@jessesternum quirkiness certainly seems to be his forte. You can tell he's enjoying it, too, because of those little bits that I'll be willing to bet weren't actually scripted, but just that he thought to toss in.
lol@ HarlequinRaven i agree with you is is such a grea actor u can kind of understad wh y they have gone mad but i meen i would!love u DT its ven in the name<3
When he says "blow them at the moon" and then gasps I am TOTALLY reminded of the Doctor. xD But what I love about DT is that every single part he plays he makes different from every other. :) He's a brilliantly mad Hamlet.
@HarlequinRaven i agreee its such a doctor thing to say!! plus the noise he makes afterwards :P i love DT as hamlet, he plays the part to perfection =]
What a fantastic scene. And well played by both. I love the incestuous undercurrents between Hamlet and Gertrude, it's so horrifying and twisted. Wish I could see this production in full. Perhaps I'll buy the DVD.
Yes, it's out on DVD here in the UK. Couldn't see it on Amazon's US site though. You could probably import it from Amazon UK, just make sure you have a player that can play PAL format dvd's.
This is some of Tennant's best acting, imho. That expression on Hamlet's face right before he hugs his mother...heartbreaking.

As much as i think David Tennant is a masterful Hamlet, i must say that the actress that plays Gertrude really shines in this scene

Downie is absolutely brilliant in this scene. Her heartbreaking laugh into her sobbing is just beautifully heart wrenching.
