The truth is: paper currency would still be usable after any collapse--for at least a year of so. It's all people will HAVE, so they will continue to use it. Still, you can't go wrong with tangibles, as you say. Probably the best are guns and ammo. Storable food is another--but it doesn't have a high value to volume ratio.

Concerning ammo beware of chambering differences of "like" ammunition. For example .223 is usually referring to .223 Remmington and not 5.56 NATO. While an rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO can use .223 Remminton, be very careful when using 5.56 NATO in a rifle chambered for .223 Remmington as 5.56 NATO has a much higher chamber pressure. The same goes for .308 and 7.62 NATO.
@Robbob9933 If a gun is .223 caliber it can probably shoot 5.56, like my .223 Mini-14. If is labeled a Remmington .223, you should not shoot the 5.56.

He neglected to read the little booklet that said use .223 Remington only, he thought he knew better. My AR is stamped 5.56 NATO / .223 Rem. Book says designed for 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington is safe to use but will produce slight accuracy differences at longer ranges. Many ammo sellers equate .223 Rem and 5.56 NATO (M193).

@theroadwarri0r It is not a question of if the gun will shoot the ammunition. The gun will fire wolf. The issue with wolf comes with high rate of fire and the heat that type of firing produces. With high rates of fire wolf has one of the highest jamming rates.
@WurledPeas It is not an issue with the rifle. Once your chamber gets hot enough the lacquer on the outside of some Wolf casings melts causing it to stick to the chamber walls this results in failed extractions and jams.
@Veritasorator I've never had a problem with that. Not to mention they don't make lacquered cases anymore. Not that there are not some still out there, I have cases of lacquered rounds, but they use a polymer coating now.

Depending on your states legality with magazine fed firearms like in the PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF KALIFORNIASTAN, the mini-14 may be a better option than an AR. I would suggest a channel by mrlockandload. He does a very good job explaining the need for a WEAPON as opposed to a rifle for hunting or plinking if you dont really have a grasp of actaully using a firearm for anything other than hunting, and save me the trouble of having to explain things it a long topic.
