Most fans just watch the Japanese version (since it's far better and farther in the story line) or read the manga, so really the FUNimation dub just served to cater to the sub haters, which is like 1% of the fandom.

@warlordgorgutz1 Actually they did far more than you think. FUNimation brought legality back to One Piece for none Japanese fans. I myself only watch the Japanese version and read the manga but now that FUNimation licensed One Piece we can buy the DVD boxsets which also have the Japanese version on the discs instead of illegally downloading the episodes with shifty quality that can cater to throwing the OP anime economy to the dirt.

@NaruSakuHina5000 I doubt no more than a few thousand will even consider buying the DVDs when they can watch it free on the website. And I'm pretty sure you have to buy a separate set for Japanese and another for English; they don't come together.

I'm not saying that FUNimation has had no impact whatsoever on the fandom here in the West, I'm just letting you know that it wasn't as much of a boost as you think it was. I had not even heard of the FUNimation dub before I started the Jap version.

@warlordgorgutz1 Actually quite a few people buy them otherwise they wouldn't bother licensing the series. They support the industry by purchasing the products. And anime DVDs nowadays come with both the English and Japanese versions on the same disc, of which you can choose which to watch at the menu. I've yet to purchase any OP DVDs because it's not in my region but I buy the manga volumes. It's a whole different joy when you actually have the book in your hand, same as the episodes on DVDs.

i cried so much when robin yelled "i wanna live take me to sea with you" my husband was making fun of me, asking "are you crying?" i was like "no" with tears on my eyes lol he warned me that i would cry at somepoint while watching OP i was like oh please i've never cried with any anime before why would i cry with this weird looking one and there i was a couple hundred episodes later crying my eyes out >.<

@sagax05 The reason why the manga is a bigger hit is because that's how it started. Everyone read the One Piece manga. The show is as popular because of how many episodes are in it.
