I'm pretty sure that Midgar Zolom is a mistranslation, and it's supposed to be Midgardsormr, mythical serpent of Norse legend who chews on the roots of the World Tree Yggdrasil.
My second cd of FFVII was broken.. I played this so much though.. I ended up beating the snake with flat out surviving beta and stuff... Having Yuffie in my party! .... ah.. So bad. ><
I know this is an old video but i recently started playing this again my hit points are higher than yours and i somewhat have all the same materia and i use the same technique as you i have fought this bastard like 10 times already to learn the spell once and die just to not have it afterwards love ya man but you must be using a cheat system there is hardly no way at this level.
@BinaryDood grind and the most important part is to eguip elemental and fire materia to your ARMOR that way that character can just barely survive it.
it would be possible for it to stay on aeris because I saw in an enemy skill only speed run (after out of midgar ofc) and they get LF Suicide even though none of the chars had a lvl a multiple of 4 . If you went over the footage again you would find that it gets cast at Aeris but misses
I noticed that there are slots in the enemy skill list not filled. Is it possible to fill the list or are there simply skills that never made it into the game or are unlearnable?
arg, that snake makes me sooo angry! he just flicks aeris away every time! i don't even get the chance to survive the beta, let alone use it on him. out of tranquilizers too.. hurray..
If you wait til you get the Enemy Skill 'Laser', it actually works well on the Midgar Zolom, 2000HP on the first hit. I suspect its on the other continent, so you may have to take the boat back to the marshes afterwards but at that point in the game beta is still insanely powerful. Fire ring also works well to max fire defense.
Thanks for the help. I made sure everyone was in the back and areis did have her talisman equipped. The last step is the one I think went wrong how do I equip the elemental and fire to her armor the bottom slots?
I have tried to get the beta so many times that i forgot how many times I've tried and still haven't gotten it :(... I put only Elemental Materia link with fire, and Enemy skill on Aeris. Cloud has All Materia link to restore, and earth. Red Xll I had him with the same Materia as cloud's equipped. Whenever I get to the point where he use's Beta I do as you showed and use Aeris's Heal special. BUT the beta destroy's me everytime with the damages of 800plus. What did I DO WRONG?
3 Things I can think of: Make sure they are all in the back row, make sure you have the talisman equipped on Aeris, and make sure you have elemental and fire materia on here armor not her weapon.
I agree about the Enemy Skill materia, it is just amazing on how much usefull it is, specially with some defensive spells later on, And besides, working on it is just so fun ^^
theres a summon that you can learn from the chocobos at the inn/farm place, just talk to one of the chocobos in the fence thing then it should give you the option to say "wark" or "wark wark" if you choose the first option (i think its "wark", not sure) they dance and afterwards they give you the Choco/Mog summon
FF 7 fanboys have such a narrow prspective. the turn base fights are boring and have no action in them. ff 7 looks like crap(even when it orginally realesed) cut scences are not the games graphics nor are the pre render background you cant even interact with that background cause its 2d. ff7s story and characters were compared to other games crap. so ff7 fanboys admit it, get, over it, that slap yourself 1 time for every ridiculous claim youve made about ff7 being 1 of the best games ever
The character with the enemy skill materia has to survive the fight and be there at the end, so if the Zolom hits them away or kills them you're out of luck.

I did a different approach. I'm an avid player and I trained as much as possible. By this point all my people had their level 2 limit breaks and were at least on level 20. I had an easy time with him. Right after acquiring Yuffie, I trained everyone until they had their level 3 Limit Breaks. I was very powerful early in the game.
2-Buy Chocobo Lure Materia (2000 gil) at the Chocobo Farm;
3-Buy some Mimmete greens;
4-Follow the tracks of Chocobos around Chocobo Farm and you need to find the right combination encounter battle (2 Levrikons and a chocobo);
5-First thing to do is give Mimmete greens to chocobo and launch the L4 Suicide enemy skill on all enemies and if you do right, the chocobo take damage and simply cast Chocobuckle at one person
If someone can answer this question I would be very appreciative of them. I think this question has already been answered I just cant comprehend some people's posts but if I am correct you can come back and fight Zolom later on in the game? So the only reason I would attempt to get Beta right now is because of how useful it is for early game. Let me know if I am correct, Thanks!
i like all the weak mobs in mythril caves for leveling, also i always messed up the mayor's puzzle...but what does that have to do with the zolom?, I haven't played ff7 in ten years...i plan on playing through soon, i just am leery because i have windows 7 and i heard it takes a bit of extra "loving". haven't had any luck with emulators i think i might just go buy an old ps.
hehe..... I remember the first time I beat the stupid Midgar Zolam.. It took me 'til halfway through Disk 2; I kept going back to check periodically if I was strong enough, yet. I was all ready to do my fist pump of victory (which tends to accompany my defeat of difficult fights....Oh Godo...), and then I saw how much exp. and AP I got. Yeah. I was a little ticked. Just a bit. XP Good times. Good times.

BTW He kept removing Aeris from the battle, so I just reset my PS (Yes I actually play on one) and it worked out fine!
@Yossarian409 You can come back later, but Beta is by far the most damage your characters can do at this point. If you don't get Beta, you'll just have to rely on summons.
to get beta enemy skill you can use a fire ring to prevent any damage and the chocobo farms if you talk to the chocobo and say wark wark you get a materia after a dance
i used barret mindblow cloud meteorrain tifa highest is somersul barrets is ungermax easiest way to lvl up limits is any spell all equip to charecter you want to leval up and kill 82 enemies lvlup use 5 times lvl up repeat then when you get to lvl 3 limit switch charecter..and on midgar zolom i casted bio thn mindblow take out mp and attack and limits thats how you do it
I spent about half hour trying to find the correct level chocobo to use L4 suicide on and when I eventually find one I distract it, use the attack with Aeris, and as it's about to use that attack on Aeris, Red XIII jumps in front of her and covers her preventing her from learning the enemy skill. Oh man, this sucks.
I finally did this after like 15 tries..I never could survive beta even with all the damage reduction, but I gave the necessary materia to Aeris instead of Cloud and it made a huge difference, :/
Umm getting chocobuckle the chocobo keeps running away even though i give it a green and never uses the blue magic when it gets hit by lv4 suci. any ideas why?I've done it with a damage of 155 or so so that was a multiple of 4 type but no buckle attack...
Thanks, HCBailly. Not only did you get me interested enough in Final Fantasy VII to give it a chance (the graphics had deterred me before) but you've provided me with great tips. I'm putting the enemy skills and steal materia to great use. I followed your tips exactly and was able to get Beta, which is awesome. I'm not sure Aeris is neccessary. I did use her, but her turn to use her limit came a little too late. I survived only because she was at a little higher level than your Aeris. Thanks.
@Oliveeruska Talisman really helps defend against Beta, and those are really the only early game methods you can use. Also, you should Link Fire to Elemental on your armor to raise your resistance to fire.
hmm im playing the legit ps1 version so are any of these things you say are bugged are there on ps1 (i think your using a computer version since you menion a save state)

you need to connect your "Cure" materia with an "All" materia in two linked slots on your armour or weapon, and then you can use cure on all your characters :)
darn it HCbaily i thought you were going to sell ALL your elemental materia (i.e fire, ice lightning, poison) so i sold all mine too.. :( now i have to backtrack for a fire lol
In all the FF7 Collections Sethiroth never wears a cape but for some reason every one says the saw someone wear a black cape so mabe Cloud and the ethars were casing the wrong guy.
The characters actually bring this up. They belong to a "rich customer of his" and aren't for rent/sale. I believe you later figure out who that was, but I'm not sure.
i didnt get elemntal materia from shinra building and im at part with midgar zolom. am i screwed? also, when you said that your going into marshes without chocobo, i felt sorry for you. i wouldn't try to battle it.
I'm not sure if this works and I don't have a save state. You can try it if you like.
Once the Midgar Zolom rises up (I think below 50% HP), have someone w/o the Enemy Skill materia attack it. He should counterattack by blowing that character out of battle.
Then, keep wittling its HP down. Eventually, it should counter with Beta (below 25% HP, I think). This will kill you, but since your other party member was blown away, I think you should still learn Beta w/o a Game Over.
@HCBailly I had the same problem as captaintylersparrow and i tried what you said and it still didn't work. Is there any other way to get elemental besides getting it from the shinra building and if so is it past when aeris dies and if it isn't can I get back to the Zolom when I get it?
@HCBailly This is how the Midgar Zolom works. Below 50% HP he does indeed rise up. Then he will counterattack the first person who attacks him by knocking them out of battle. Then he does not counterattack the 2nd attack. On the 3rd attack he will counter with Beta. The best time to get the Zolom to cast Beta is when it is one poison damage away from death. You attack it, it counters with Beta and then the poison kills it before it can use its attack, making it easy to have enough hp to survive.
@captaintylersparrow get Aeris to limiot level 3 and she learn Planet Protector which will make you invincible for a brief time. When Midgar Zolom blows someone out of battle use this and attack with someone, it should use beta and if timed right you'll receive no damage :)
@Samcubegamer true but by the time aeris is level three you are much farther in the game and i never use aeris anymore because you lose her mid game. i usually just level my limit breaks and magic up to 2 in the mythril caves to kill the zolom, usually only takes about an hour of powering. although now that i realize that beta works on the zolom....for some reason i always assumed he would be immune...this is the def. the easiest way to kill it.
@A4moondoggy yeah by far the easier to follow this guide, I however always mess up the mayors puzzle lol I like the grind up around this time however so I go the the forest near fort condor and simply raise my limits up there as it's really easy due to the enemies doing decent damage to you and aeris is quick to level up there :) I can see why people don't level her up much though. Normally I don't but recently I have found it fun to level her up and rather handy for the Demon gate battle.
I would like to point out that when you fight zolom you should use poison against him and sit back in back healing and just wait for him to die. Also you missed choco mog that is the first summon you can get.
Whenever the zolom puts its head up, the next person who attacks him will be pushed out of the battle, so make sure it's not the person with enemy skill!
Okay you made that look way too easy... I went and did the same things you did and I was mad cause he either counter attacks my aeris or it lands on Cloud/RedXIII when he performs beta... I'll try more tomorrow.
You can run through the swamp and just save and restart every time he is close to you, when you come back to the game he will be further away. Using this method you can get across with out even going to the chocoboo farm or fighting the midgar zooloom. But then again you miss out on a lot of matreria and the emeny skill
Awesome, I guess Sqaure Enix made it so that you would die and so that you wouldn't get it unless you used your head... I would of never thought of that, I would of done it the easy way and got the Chocobo, nice job.
in order to defeat the midgar zolom is to just use Bio (what ever level you have) and just keep attacking it, Until its down to 6000 hp, DON'T ATTACK IT THEN! or it'll use beta, Just allow the poison spell to take the zolom down, Just have some restores on command.. So you can heal, as the zolom hits hard if your a low level (:

so is that like one of the most powerful spells in the game? because it seems very unlikely many people would get it. Your supreme peppy powers were just too much
It's frightening useful throughout the game, especially early on. Plus, it powers up with your magic strength, so I found it very useful. It's not the enemy skill that I *abused* throughout the course of the game(he'll show that in a few videos), but still a very nice Disc One Nuke.
Tried to get beta, but poisoned it and it ticked for 125 dmg. XD My advise, if you can, poison it before it uses b eta. It makes killing it ALOT easier. =)
I never found the Elemental, is their anyway to get it at this point in the game.

I spent about half hour trying to find the correct level chocobo to use L4 suicide on and when I eventually find one I distract it, use the attack with Aeris, and as it's about to use that attack on Aeris, Red XIII jumps in front of her and covers her preventing her from learning the enemy skill. Oh man, this sucks.

I finally did this after like 15 tries..I never could survive beta even with all the damage reduction, but I gave the necessary materia to Aeris instead of Cloud and it made a huge difference, :/

Umm getting chocobuckle the chocobo keeps running away even though i give it a green and never uses the blue magic when it gets hit by lv4 suci. any ideas why?I've done it with a damage of 155 or so so that was a multiple of 4 type but no buckle attack...

Thanks, HCBailly. Not only did you get me interested enough in Final Fantasy VII to give it a chance (the graphics had deterred me before) but you've provided me with great tips. I'm putting the enemy skills and steal materia to great use. I followed your tips exactly and was able to get Beta, which is awesome. I'm not sure Aeris is neccessary. I did use her, but her turn to use her limit came a little too late. I survived only because she was at a little higher level than your Aeris. Thanks.

@Oliveeruska Talisman really helps defend against Beta, and those are really the only early game methods you can use. Also, you should Link Fire to Elemental on your armor to raise your resistance to fire.

you need to connect your "Cure" materia with an "All" materia in two linked slots on your armour or weapon, and then you can use cure on all your characters :)

The characters actually bring this up. They belong to a "rich customer of his" and aren't for rent/sale. I believe you later figure out who that was, but I'm not sure.

i didnt get elemntal materia from shinra building and im at part with midgar zolom. am i screwed? also, when you said that your going into marshes without chocobo, i felt sorry for you. i wouldn't try to battle it.

I'm not sure if this works and I don't have a save state. You can try it if you like.
Once the Midgar Zolom rises up (I think below 50% HP), have someone w/o the Enemy Skill materia attack it. He should counterattack by blowing that character out of battle.
Then, keep wittling its HP down. Eventually, it should counter with Beta (below 25% HP, I think). This will kill you, but since your other party member was blown away, I think you should still learn Beta w/o a Game Over.

@HCBailly I had the same problem as captaintylersparrow and i tried what you said and it still didn't work. Is there any other way to get elemental besides getting it from the shinra building and if so is it past when aeris dies and if it isn't can I get back to the Zolom when I get it?

@HCBailly This is how the Midgar Zolom works. Below 50% HP he does indeed rise up. Then he will counterattack the first person who attacks him by knocking them out of battle. Then he does not counterattack the 2nd attack. On the 3rd attack he will counter with Beta. The best time to get the Zolom to cast Beta is when it is one poison damage away from death. You attack it, it counters with Beta and then the poison kills it before it can use its attack, making it easy to have enough hp to survive.

@captaintylersparrow get Aeris to limiot level 3 and she learn Planet Protector which will make you invincible for a brief time. When Midgar Zolom blows someone out of battle use this and attack with someone, it should use beta and if timed right you'll receive no damage :)

@Samcubegamer true but by the time aeris is level three you are much farther in the game and i never use aeris anymore because you lose her mid game. i usually just level my limit breaks and magic up to 2 in the mythril caves to kill the zolom, usually only takes about an hour of powering. although now that i realize that beta works on the zolom....for some reason i always assumed he would be immune...this is the def. the easiest way to kill it.

@A4moondoggy yeah by far the easier to follow this guide, I however always mess up the mayors puzzle lol I like the grind up around this time however so I go the the forest near fort condor and simply raise my limits up there as it's really easy due to the enemies doing decent damage to you and aeris is quick to level up there :) I can see why people don't level her up much though. Normally I don't but recently I have found it fun to level her up and rather handy for the Demon gate battle.

I would like to point out that when you fight zolom you should use poison against him and sit back in back healing and just wait for him to die. Also you missed choco mog that is the first summon you can get.

Whenever the zolom puts its head up, the next person who attacks him will be pushed out of the battle, so make sure it's not the person with enemy skill!

You don't need to be a lvl thats a multi of 4 to learn suicide. You just need to be hit by it in battle, even if it misses.

You can run through the swamp and just save and restart every time he is close to you, when you come back to the game he will be further away. Using this method you can get across with out even going to the chocoboo farm or fighting the midgar zooloom. But then again you miss out on a lot of matreria and the emeny skill

in order to defeat the midgar zolom is to just use Bio (what ever level you have) and just keep attacking it, Until its down to 6000 hp, DON'T ATTACK IT THEN! or it'll use beta, Just allow the poison spell to take the zolom down, Just have some restores on command.. So you can heal, as the zolom hits hard if your a low level (:

It's frightening useful throughout the game, especially early on. Plus, it powers up with your magic strength, so I found it very useful. It's not the enemy skill that I *abused* throughout the course of the game(he'll show that in a few videos), but still a very nice Disc One Nuke.

Tried to get beta, but poisoned it and it ticked for 125 dmg. XD My advise, if you can, poison it before it uses b eta. It makes killing it ALOT easier. =)
