My name is Alshaima Al-Safadi, currently studying speech and hearing sciences at Dar alhekma college in Saudi Arabia. Am doing a presentation about 'hearing loss in elderly people' and I benefitted alot from your vide from your exerience. with your permission, I would like to include your video in my presentation. Thank you!
Sure was scary, no too ways about it. Maybe I could have picked up on a gradual change leading up to the sudden loss, but it was not sufficient warning to promote an investigation, Which begs the question if I had picked it up eralier would it have made any real difference - except lessen the shock.
Now I'm grateful for my Nucleus Implant, which does a grate job.
this happened to me almost 3 years ago in the right ear. Total loss except for clicks, a constant wave sound and cant hear any sounds. 3 days prior I got dizzy a few times for about 10 seconds then the fourth day watching tv and it shut down. Then it was replaced with noise and the left ear that hears now has ringing all the time and I never had it before. Oh and ringing in the ear that does not hear as well. It has taken everything for me to balance and re-learn.
happened to me in my left ear. woke up with 2 ears washed my face and left ear 100% gone.Been 6 years now. Hear clicking sounds and feels like sinus isalways blocked but no cure :o(
Hi Thanks for your comment - sorry to hear or your loss - its something of a shock - to say the least that something like that can happen. Just not a thing that one would ever contemplate as being possible. Seems once its gone its gone nothing to be done about it - just adapt as well as possible (and look after your good ear).
Thank Eric, I am a musician by trade but acoustic not some loud rock band. Yep seen all the ENT masters and suffered the Ego's but the bottom line is as you say once it has gone it appears it has indeed gone.
My right ear is now amazing as is my sense of vibration through the floor. the sun goes up and the sun goes down and we adapt :o)
Hi. Shock would be something of an understatement LOL
Never really pined down the cause - probably a blocked blood supply, but that does not answer the question, why. I sometimes wonder if the illness which damaged my right ear may not also have weakened the other, even though it continued to work for another 60 odd years. I don't see that I could have had a toxin problem, not on medications etc. Guess I will never know.
Eric, it must have been a shock to wake up to the sudden deafness in your only good ear. In the end the ENT doctors really have no clue as to what causes Sudden Hearing Loss. They need to do Differential Diagnosis before they treat anyone. In August of 2008 I woke up with severe Sudden Sensorineural loss in my right ear. Word recognition is 0% but it's not as bad as yours. I am convinced it was a toxilogical cause wich caused free radical damage. Injections of Prednisone did not work.

how could suddenly losing your hearing overnight not set the "alarm bells ringing"?
It did for me. It was very alarming and scary
