I think it was somebody who worked at the Hannington transmitter station. In the 60s, 70s and 80s transmitter stations were a busy place. There was always someone present, 24/7.
With 4 or 5 technicians and an engineer they were doing day and nightshifts. Moreover, Hannington supplied other transmitters with picture and sound. Other stations picked up the Hannington Signal and rebroadcasted it. So it's very simple to send the sound over 6 or 7 other stations.

I watched this as it happened live - after the ITN news would finish at 10:30pm they would show a late night horror film - one of the old Hammer ones, my dad was working nights and there was me , my mam and my older brother - we thought it was someone messing about - but it always stuck in my head , I remember afterwards that a spokesman for thames television came on air to apologise for the breakdown in the programme schedule - my mam remembers it much better than I do as I was only a kid.
