Just saw Michael in LA at HOB on 2/25/12 for first time since '04. He is playing better than in recent years and can still play at a very high level. But I have to say he does not play with the same ferocity and feeling as he once did as in this video. In his prime from '82 - '92 he was an incredibly mesmerizing player. No others playing style moves me more than his. Age catches up to us all but its good to see him playing at a high level again. Wish he would go back to the gibson though.
I was 12 years old when my older brother taped Rock Pop '83 on video. We watched it until the video broke down. Great to see this on Youtube. Michael Schenker had a great influence on my playing, great choice of notes and phrasing, tasty. What can I say: know your classics.
I was 15 years old when I saw this concert at that time on German TV. This version of the Courvoisier Concerto is my all time favourite which sounds much better than any recorded version on his LP releases. Maybe it is because the song is combined with "Rock will never die" where Gary Barden performes almost perfectly. Both songs are masterpieces and will last forever!!!!!
Not even so sure it was his age, I'd say it was more likely his lifestyle, maybe he couldn't handle the pressure possibly he was happier just being in a band without having to be the star, it may have been any or none of these things, but he was always troubled by something as he used tgo split every so often and then reappear, only to go missing again. Great shame because at his peak there were very few who could come anywhere near him, Jack Starr possibly being the exception
the last part of this song has all the greatest schenkisms in the solo, very reminecent of the im a loser and this kids solos!the man rocks just as good today!
The Cassette I found was "Force It" It changed my musical landscape forever its been a fun journey watching UFO and Michael continually release stellar material!
Being a Schenker Fan since I first heard his playing on a cassette I found under a car seat at a carlot that I now own some 28 years ago. I was hooked and mesmerized by his masterfull playing. This performance captures the true essence for me of Michaels abilities. One of if not the best guitarist on the planet.
Do you (AAM197) think that the concert in Dortmund can possible be Michael's best playing ever? I mean, he is so focused and he is playing his heart out so badly, the atmosphere is absolutely vibrating! I don't think I have ever heard any guitarist getting so carried away.
Yes I do! He really played his heart out that night. I,ll never forget that night in Dortumd. Two great days of rock also. I,ve been learning his riffs on guitar since UFO. Michael is a lengend in the music world.
I am imagining Eddie Van halen doing this, he probably needs two tremelo bars on his guitars and 3 strings added to his guitar just to sound like Mike.
I don't think its age that has slowed him down because John Mclaughlin can still tear it up and he's in his 70s. Its the alcohol and apathy. I wish I could see him at this level again.
Mclaughlin does not tear it up in the same way as Schenker. The Schenk's playing is much more precise, melodic, and nimble-fingered. It requires the passion, inspiration, and lightning mind-to-fingers speed that only young men have.
Schenker showed in his last couple of good California shows of this year that he his restructuring his solos and fills to fit his abilities. Tasty stuff. The dude is still evolving.
I don´t say he´s playing bad notes. I miss the melodic flow in his solos, which was really spiritual and has never been beaten by any other guitarist. I saw him twice here in Germany the last years, sure he was great and I still admire him. But if you compare his aczual playing to this video, the magic is gone. But hey - he´s still Michael Schenker!
Also I have read that he has been on good form recently so if you have chance to see him I'd defo go,I'm hopefully going to see him next month along with the scorps and uli roth.
Last year I saw him at Glasgow and he didnt play a bad note, met him afterwards was a great night.
I think michaels problems are more pychological than physical as in he can still play as well now as in his youth and I've seen him do so last year,he seems to be a mood type player though so when he's up for it he's great when he isnt his playing can suffer, drinking obviously can make his playing really bad.
I doubt that bobquem. Not that I think alcohol does anyone any good.. but I can relate. I believe he can still play like that. I'm going to find out on June 22nd at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana! I have nothing but much overdue love to express for the guy.
I saw the concert "live" on german TV in 1983. Incredible to see how good Michael was these days. Sad to see and hear him today. That´s what alcohol does to people. But he sure is one of the world´s all time guitar heroes, highly respected by top musicians.
I don't think alcohol had much to do with his demise. It was simply age. His style of playing back in his heyday could only be played by a relatively young man. Like most artists he simply hit his peak and it's been mostly downhill ever since (the exception being that first Schenker/Pattison album).

I always loved this track off the Budokan LP..great version here. Love Michael's tone on the V...I read its cause he has the Wah Pedal half cocked.
