not only are the people doomed to repeat history if they dont know about it, but if the youth of this country will not know what their nation was based on. they should also know what the people in these wars died and fought for, their freedom and rights as anAmerican
My Generation (1990's-2000's) are clueless as to what happened back then. Only the rare person will actually say something that I know about. I swear, they need to sit down, and read a history book. I agree with theWhiteLion, "Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it." FDR gave some of the most influential Speeches in his time, and I hope that any future President of the United States of America will look to the past to gain insight to the Future.
@deltasquadftw god bless you...i made a similar comment just a day or two ago...i believe it was on part 1 of darkness falls which is also part 1 of this great series....i was born in the early eighties and trust me friend it is not just your generation
@AUG351 so so true, which is why you should get the Military History Ch :D a branch of the History Ch but with less of the reality tv shows and more history, especially military history and good military documentaries. you can find anything from the romans to the revolutions to the world wars to the iraqi wars on there. ever since i got it i spent more time on that channel than any other ch. i only switch to the reg hist ch to watch pawn stars cause it's the only reality show i like on there
@Aeosura Yeah, I have that channel aswell also there is history international wich shows older shows from the history channel that are more like documentaries and most are more history related than the regular history ch.
This series should be shown in every school in the United states. It reminds you of what our forefathers went through, endured and accomplished which has almost totally been forgotten by the younger generations today and our educational system. Those who do not remember our history are doomed to repeat it. World wide over 22,572,400 Soldiers and over 62,171,400 civilians died as a result of this conflict. There memories should never be forgotten.
@theWhiteLion peace and freedom comes at a great cost. mothers spoil their children they don't know and don't care about how they are free to go and get their girlfriends pregnant and not be severaly punished for it. your idea may help, but I'm afraid my friend the only way for people to see is to experience it themselves. "no man knows war except those who have lived through it"
@theWhiteLion agreed not so long ago a 17 year old girl told me to my face FUCK history. to witch I replied I Think you aught to go around to every war vet you can find be it nam ww2 or so on and thank them for fighting your freedom and for the right to say such words. I really had a few other things to say but I was not trying to get fired. looking back now i wish I had payed more attention in history class not that I didn't but I could have payed more
But nooo. In my case the new generation of young today take little in learning history. I mean CoD is not a very good historical source. And Most of all they take Call of Duty heavily as one. Sad.
@theWhiteLion You have to remember "No Blood + Gore!" - US schools are retards. Im in high school, and you have to get a parent signature to watch a PG-13 movie!!!
@theWhiteLion i agree.many people, especially my generation (1980s) are clueless about american history and so many points made during this series have direct coralation to what is going on today
So.. i started to watch this again today, and i was curious who was the narrator so i went and check him up, and little did i knew Gary Sinise is lieutenant Dan from forest gump.. hahaha now i cant get it out of my head and i cant watch the dam episodes w/o imagining him >.<
I've been haunted by the clip of the little girl being given a drink of water by the soldier. Does anyone have any info on this? Is it part of a longer clip? As a father of 2 I can't imagine how scared that child must have been. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.
@firstmusic00 she and the rest of her inhabitants were treated miserbaly by japans officials and were glad when the mariens came to okinawa. she along with many other inhabitants were shot apon after the americans mistakenly took them as a banzi attack since it was night.
(i apologize if i missplelled anything but please dont correct me on it).
Not because of the power, richness, or anything like that, but because of beautiful people like the ones who have posted positive comments about the mini-series. IU watch it over and over, my chest filling with pride and my eyes with tears, for the brave men and women who paid the ultimate price, or just fought to overcome a few tyrants and their evil cronies.
I am so proud of you and my foster-country!! Thank you ALL!!
I am an Afro-Cubano who emmigrated to the (GREAT) US of A in 1958, two weeks before Castro entered La Habana. My mom and dad had come here two years before to establish themselves and obtain citizenship. I love my country Cuba, but have a deep and abiding passion for my new homeland. I served in the USN during the Vietnam war. One thing for sure - the US of A is truyly the best country in the world!!
@wwiibigfan The irony is that Roosevelt didn't write the Flag day speech, but stephen benet. Although to be fair, only Kennedy or Eisenhower could have said it with just as much passion as Roosevelt
"Grant us a common faith, that man shall know bread and peace. That he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom and security. An equal opportunity and an equal chance to do his best, not only in our own lands but throughout the world."
@kababayanC2 spoiler!!! I brought the DVD last summer. Bert Stiles die in plane crush while chasing German fighter.June Wandery pass away in a few years before the show was produced, Richard Tregaskis pass away long after the war (sometimes between 1970-1990) Only a small handful vets from WW2 still alive today.
@kababayanC2 I'm sorry to say it, but most likely they are dead. A vast majority of the veterans and victims shown in this series are now passed away. God bless them.
I love the show - does anyone have any information/knowledge about the girl featured in the intro? She's pictured just after the paratroopers, drinking water from the canteen of a soldier? I'm dying to find out more about that.
I am a 12 year old kid right now and i admit i do play the COD series but i am one of the few kids who still remembers the sacrifices that these soldiers made and i DON'T believe that war is fun and games and that it is a horrible horrible thing
It's like being a kid lost in the woods. Out there you face fear and danger. Its a game of life and death. Not fun, Nor play. Agony, not comfort. Nightmares, not dreams. Fight for survival, not an easy course handed down on a silver platter. Just pain and misery.
It's Fort George by Lorne Balfe(I think is spelled like that)just type in Fort George Music on the YouTube search and you should be able to find it...another nice song is perfect ten also same composer
That poor child :( War is indeed terrible, But if given the chance to serve, Would you all serve to stop something terrible like what Hitler did? Or Kim-Jong il? I would serve to stop hate and prejudice. Serve for freedom everyone! Serve to protect those that can't protect themselves!
War is Chaotic Hell and most veterans have been traumatized by the experience they fought in. but this was the most historical war that was ever fought. I love studying about the historical wars and such. But SOME of today's generation with poor experience in the military don't know what it means to fight they just think that it is fun and exiting until they get into the action witnessing innocent civilians killed and injured and have to listen to their screams and cry's. like then in WWII.
Does anyone know the song in the episode End Game where june wandrey, is in the Concentraion camp. It sounds like a really sad Violen song, its in a couple differnt spots in the series but this is the best point of time i can give in ther series for where i hear it. Its great song very sad mood to it but very fitting, any idea what it is please tell me.
However, I'd be curious to see perspectives from all sides of the war, not just ours. It is impossible to document the massive scope and scale of the war, and to do so would be the longest documentary in the world. I think that the international community should take up the goal of trying to recover lost documents and footage to document all aspects of the war because this war was the most significant event ever to take place in human history.
There are probably hundreds of various documentaries about the war available, from all sides. But, the most ambitious is "World at War". It's a mulitpart series from the late 70's. They interviewed people from every side, the people who were there. It's very good.
The finest documentary ever made, period. And I'v seen them all being a history buff. And Gary Sinise is the narrator, not some faggot ass Hollywood liberal who hates America and its proud military.
sorry to be so blunt. but this video, and this speech, has to be one of the best in the history of the united states of america, if not one of the best in the world. FDR was a great president and a great man.
The same things you've been saying is what people have been saying for hundreds of years. "Their generation is weak," or "They have it easy now, we were tougher, stronger." The fact is, the people who served in WWII had grandfathers in the American Civil War, fathers in WWI, who were talking about how all the 40's kids listened to their radios and sipped their soda pop without a care in the world. But I know when duty calls, in the darkest hour, this generation can rise to meet the challenge.
@alienx1002 Its hard to say. Back than, the music, the people, and the whole country wasn't like it is now. I say they couldn't, because they have not a clue what hell really is, but they know what partying is, you go look at all the kids ages 15-30, all they want is money for beer, beer for getting drunk, and getting drunk for partying. Than the music. Lil wayne, , thats absolute garbage. Back than, you went to a concert to listen to peacefull music. Now, you go to a concert, drugs, beer, dumb.
"When it is of common faith, that man shall know bread and piece, that he shall know justice and liberty, freedom and security, and an equal opprotunity their best, not only in our own land, but throughout the world."
Gary Sinise, the Narrarator, was Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump
@patsfreak I agree. I'm 15, but your 24 and our 2 generations don't know a damn thing about freedom, and the lives it took to get it. Its all about partying now days. Kids your age back in WW2 were flying fighters in the war.
@WarBirdMan1 You are so right. I am 15 also. Our generation Knows nothing about the horros of war.
I look at the past as a way of learning for the future. Our generation is weak, but think's itself invincible. When that wake up call hits, and America is plunged again into another world war, I doubt we'll make it through it in tact.
@totalwar57 They wont, they will be to busy partying, they couldn't go be a pilot in a B-17 or P-51 right out of high school like most kids did during the war. Nope. Its absolutely pathetic.
@B17MAN1090 I agree, everytime we watch a documentry in History Class, we hear the veterans speak on the horror of the war, and I see them not taking it seriously, It saddens me that we can only understand if we go through it ourselves.
This series is the best world war 2 documentary I have ever seen. Thank God that there were men and women who served our country to give us freedom. I'm forever grateful and wish I could of taken part in it.
grant us a common faith that men shall know bread and peace that he shall know justice and reichiousness freedom and security and an equal chance to do his best
not only in our own lands but throughtout the world -PRESIDENT FRANKLIN D. ROSSAVELT....GODBLESSAMERICA
this opening always makes me just want to stand up and salute all those who served in the world wars, and how proud I am of America for doing what is right in europe and across the world. GREAT SERIES!!!
WW2 in HD was awesome, I'm suprised with how much HD film they had. I wish they would've shone more of the Eastern Front, but that would've taken longer and since history channel is stationed in America, you want to get things Americans want to see.
its sad, that they only show the americans. no offense, but compared to other countries efforts, sacrifice, and losses, they were one of the countries LEAST affected by the war. Just think of the countries of eastern europe, its people murdered, its land destroyed. I am polish, and my country fought very hard, did a lot in the war, it breaks my heart that we are not recognized. But, my philosophy is, a country not only exists on land, but also in its people's hearts! I will never forget!
@mcnutty80 you are an undereducated idiot. sorry to be so blunt. the average german soldier was NOT THE KILLER. they had specially traied units for "extirmination" and it wasnt just jews.(not jew) it was baisicially anyone that go in the way. you see, your part of todays generation in which 95% dosent know what happened. you just play COD and call it good. do some reading.
@Imissalps If british and american soldiers would have known what diversity would have turned there countries into 65 years down the road, i can assure you they would have sided with hitler. Just look at the third world immigrants flooding the irriplacable western europe and than some liberal goes, "OH BUT IF YOU DONT ACCEPT THAT YOUR NOT WORTHY TO LIVE."
@ Trigun075 Grant us a common faith that man shall know bread and peacethat he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom and security, an equal opportunity and an equal chance to do his best not only in our own lands, but throughout the world. .
anyone know where i can get President Roosvelt speech from this video? btw watching this just made me think and feel sad for all those people who were innocent and died. How one man so evil do to one race is wrong.
Grant us a common faith that man shall know bread and peacethat he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom and security, an equal opportunity and an equal chance to do his best not only in our own lands, but throughout the world. And in that faith let us march toward the clean world our hands can make.
I know this is probably a stupid question but does anyone know if the child that the marine is giving water to survived the war. i have seen this heart braking scene in several ww2 films.
@kababayanC2 , the japanese kid's probably survived (or died i dunno)but some wwII soldiers died like Bert Stiles and Robert Sherrod. But some survived like Rockie Blunt and Jack Werner.
There are no words to describe the amount of courage, strength, and selflessness that one must possess in order to serve others. I thank every servicemember, both past and present. What you do is not for yourself, but for all of humanity. Thank you
Hey, can anyone please find me the whole sound file or clip of the Flag Day address(Flag Day June 13, 1942) I can't find it any where. Message me, thanks.
The speech is from Flag Day June 13, 1942 FDR gave. It what you are hearing at the beginning. Many others are also either FDR, ChurchHill or Truman. The best ones to me are from FDR. They really speak to the American resolve and commitment to freedom at that time. Resounding....eh.
As I watched the series, I found myself glued to those FDR's Presidential speeches that spoke of the truth and reality of WW2 to God and country. Don;t know about you all, but I listened as though they were spoken right now.
It makes me really mad that some people don't understand or care about histroy like world war 2 when it has a profound effect on their lifes, but they just don't care. I just find it sad that people don't care or know that effect it has had on human histroy
My Great Uncle, "Chub" Hart, now deceased, had helped raise the first flag on Iwo Jima, since it was too small, they replaced it with a larger flag, the one in all the videos
The song is called "Mount Legend." The only place I know to find it is on the website for ExtremeMusic and search for "Mount Legend." ExtremeMusic appears on the credits for the show as having provided the music, which is how I initially found it. I probably searched through half of their database to find the song.
One of the most outstanding series I have ever seen about World War Two. My father fought in Europe and this series made me feel like I was there. Thank you to all the people who fought and died for freedom.
@MashPotatoBoy Really to be honest i think its something to be ashamed of, historians have banded american war tactics in ww1 and ww2 as questionable and as a result there were many unnecessary deaths this is not something to be proud of
They're called 'The Greatest Generation" for a reason.

Does anyone know the song in the episode End Game where june wandrey, is in the Concentraion camp. It sounds like a really sad Violen song, its in a couple differnt spots in the series but this is the best point of time i can give in ther series for where i hear it. Its great song very sad mood to it but very fitting, any idea what it is please tell me.
snoopydonvito 1 year ago
This is amazing, I'm definitely going to get it.
However, I'd be curious to see perspectives from all sides of the war, not just ours. It is impossible to document the massive scope and scale of the war, and to do so would be the longest documentary in the world. I think that the international community should take up the goal of trying to recover lost documents and footage to document all aspects of the war because this war was the most significant event ever to take place in human history.
mongorians22 1 year ago
@mongorians22

But I know when duty calls, in the darkest hour, this generation can rise to meet the challenge.
alienx1002 1 year ago 2

The America we have today shames not only the founding fathers but these fine Americans. I doubt our generation has the cajones to do what they did,
patsfreak 1 year ago 2
@patsfreak How right you are
totalwar57 1 year ago
@patsfreak I agree. I'm 15, but your 24 and our 2 generations don't know a damn thing about freedom, and the lives it took to get it. Its all about partying now days. Kids your age back in WW2 were flying fighters in the war.
WarBirdMan1 1 year ago
@WarBirdMan1 You are so right. I am 15 also. Our generation Knows nothing about the horros of war.
I look at the past as a way of learning for the future. Our generation is weak, but think's itself invincible. When that wake up call hits, and America is plunged again into another world war, I doubt we'll make it through it in tact.
totalwar57 1 year ago
@totalwar57 They wont, they will be to busy partying, they couldn't go be a pilot in a B-17 or P-51 right out of high school like most kids did during the war. Nope. Its absolutely pathetic.
B17MAN1090 1 year ago
@B17MAN1090 I agree, everytime we watch a documentry in History Class, we hear the veterans speak on the horror of the war, and I see them not taking it seriously, It saddens me that we can only understand if we go through it ourselves.
qwirberbil 1 year ago
@qwirberbil I agree to this.
some Kids mainly these days don't care, they didn't experience it.
some Kids are shallow these days and only care about themselves.
It also saddens me :(
People try to judge the past when they have not even gone through it.

The song is called "Mount Legend." The only place I know to find it is on the website for ExtremeMusic and search for "Mount Legend." ExtremeMusic appears on the credits for the show as having provided the music, which is how I initially found it. I probably searched through half of their database to find the song.
