  • Check out Concrete Blonde Everybody Knows Spaceland 2001

  • Very fantastic!!!!!

  • saw them in sac tonight, they rocked something fierce!

  • 2:58 WoW!!!!!

  • One of the greatest renditions of one of th greatest songs, and nobody knows about it.

  • still one of my favorite voices in rock, ever

  • 2:30 James Mankey has a little orgasm. Me too, man. Johnette Napolitano is the best. CONCRETE BLONDE is the best.

  • Amazing. So much passion in her craft..its rare to see an artist anymore that has it, and Johnette always has.

  • Saw them do a set at a city park gazebo about 2 decades ago. No equipment, just two accoustics and a snare drum. And Johnette singing straight into the night air.

    Memorable to say the least.

Too bad her responsibilties in the Obama Administration keep her from touring much now.

  • @Zoetropeification Explain her responsibilities please.

That description of an evening gig sounds awesome.

I see CB booked locally at a club coming up. I'll be there.

  • i have heard this song many many times as i have been a fan of concrete blonde for about 20 years ... but this is the first time i have heard this live ... totaly blown away <3 this song even more now

  • Talk Hard!

  • Fuck me. How can you not like this?? Particularly @ around 2:30. I will find you 30 Dislikers and make you listen to this on a loop Clockwork Orange style till ya viddy like a good droogie.

  • dear god...i love this band and had no idea what she looked like..thanks for the post. i love that they cover some rads songs really well.

  • Divine! And I do like Bob at the end

  • @iNickOwens

I'm 61, seen and heard stuff.

But, THIS is beyond all I know.

    I'm stil a student.

  • Every time I listen to this it just slays me ... I have seen very few performances with so much absolute passion ... and the song itself is such an emotional trainwreck (in such a musically brilliant way) ... definitely one of my favorite musical experineces of all time! Thank you Johnette!!

  • Mother. It's aweful. It's not.

    It's us.

  • perfect angel...

  • It's so amazing to me the way she kills those notes while leaning forward. It's just physically so backwards. At least for every human I've ever seen...holy shit JOHNETTE IS NOT HUMAN?

  • Yeah.. this is talent. There nothing like a woman who says and sings it like it feels and how she pleases.

  • Nice cover of Leonard Cohen!

  • i remember this...still .....everybody knows

  • @iNickOwens wow im gonna have to co-sign that one!! Much agreed.

  • thanks for posting, for many years I've been looking for this session, and after so long, it still gives me the goose!

  • WHAT A VOICE!!!!

  • @iNickOwens

I'm 61, 'Till now, I was pretty assured of myself that I could string more than two words together that might describe 'something'.

    I have nothing.

  • 25 people who listen to rap crap fullt ime lmfao<3 concrete blonde

  • That was just plain awesome.

  • This is the sad song for Georgia tonight...Save Troy Davis!!!!!

  • Everybody needs to know Concrete Blonde and Johnette!

  • Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blonde explains what happens when heat, cross-country treks and tequila mix poorly at The Worst Gig (WorstGig.com).

  • One of the best female voices ever!!!

  • Her chorus with his original would make the best song in the world. As they used it in "Pump Up The Volume"

  • love

  • Damn! That Voice! Damn! I've run out of superlatives...and everybody knows...

  • I kind of like that quick flash of Bob at the end. The song is so raw, and he's so soothing.

  • 2:57 is flawless

  • Now I gotta go dry my eyes and blow my nose.

  • my all time favorite Band ! Our love goes with you where ever you go !

    ColVane loves you !

  • This remarkable woman has been replaced by assorted human refuse from

    New Jersey, God help us.

  • avampireconfesses . com

  • everybody knows that this the best version ever!

  • mesmerizing performance

  • i like the musc video better....just saying :D i love concrete blonde!!!!

  • hey! check it out! MTV used to actually play music

  • AMAZING!

  • Joanette and Mankey will live forever.

  • One of my favorite acoustic performances ever. Spellbinding.

  • real woman real human lets get real people, walk away from crap culture

  • love it, an amazing artist, saw them in arvada colorado last year, it was the best concert i have ever been to, johnette was awesome!!!!!!! keep it up women

  • If you ever get the chance to hear Johnette live pounce on it - when she sings like this live, her voice vibrates through your body. It makes me cry every time she sings Tomorrow Wendy live. Such power...yet controlled

  • This performance is lightning in a bottle. I saw this on mtv's original broadcast of it and I had never heard of Concrete Blonde before but I was absolutely transfixed watching it. As time has passed I appreciate it more. Jeez, such power....it's like she's channeling it from somewhere through her. She is the shizznit on more levels I can count

  • amazing performance. She needs to make more recordings.

  • eat ur heart out LADY BLAHBLAH.

  • CRYING

  • at least 22 ppl SIMPLY FUCKING DISLIKED THIS VID. i am not among them.

  • Johnette is the real deal. She just made my girl singer list--impressive accomplishment. I like her a lot better without that annoying backup band. Her drummer really sucks.

  • @79barkingspider THE DRUMMERS HOT SO,S THE BAND go back to school charlotte

  • @79barkingspider Annoying back-up band!? What? - Earl Mankey is an amazing guitar player. His skill and her delivery is what makes their sound really zing. And the drummer's not bad either.

  • @romperroomrejects Oops - JAMES Mankey - sorry dude, lol!

  • Respond to this video... I wanted to "LIKE" this a couple hundred times - too bad you can only do it once....

  • Any one know what Mankey is up to these days?

  • Leonard, and Johnette are interpreting this song from two totally different perspectives. Cohen more as a bemused spectator slash social commentator, with a laughing almost satirical bent on the subject. Johnette is the jilted lover, living inside Cohen's commentary, .completely consumed by the emotions and angst of the moment. Both performances are riveting, awesome works, but to call Concrete Blonde's version a "cover" does it a disservice!!

  • @769MB Well,it is.

  • this makes me cry every time...they don't make em like this anymore!

  • Watched and heard this a hundred times, still gives me the chills. Makes the hair on my arms stand up!! Weird, cause i'm a metalhead, and in the past 2 years, only Gojira, In This Moment, and Holy Grail have made me feel that way....maybe i'm the weirdo?

  • 21 ppl got their head too far up their ass

  • god - i remember seeing this on ntv when it premiered. Awesome rendition.

  • unbelievable cover of this great Cohen song. Concrete Blond nailed it!

  • Great nervous breakdown w/good vocals by Johnette.

  • CAN'T get over this performance!!!!!! I've watched this countless times over the years and remember the recording of this tune by Concrete Blonde in the 80's. You watch stuff like American Idol and foolishness like the over-produced stuff of a Britney Spears, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, and wonder how that can even be classified as "interpretation" or "performance" after seeing Johnette absolutely blow the roof off of the sucker with this one.

  • velvet wrapped razor blade

  • @rgcrix - - EPIC description!!!

  • Thank God for Hippies...... :-)

  • 20 people are stupid heartless bastards...how could this not give u chills??

  • @SaraSuicide666

20 people will be forever deaf...what a pity! Johnette is a gift from heaven.

  • I like this slower unplugged version of this wonderful song! Her voice is so restrained and then when she lets it out . . . SHIVERS up and down my spine!!

  • Vote this comment up if you disliked this video.

  • if you dont get chills when you watch this something is wrong with you

  • October 10th of what year?

  • Uncle Joe is not lol...Real check baby - Look around especially my Baltimore - youre too f*****g talented to be wrong((=

  • Was this an episode of MTV Unplugged? I've seen a couple clips that appear to be from the same program. Wish i could get ahold of a dvd of the whole performance.

  • I divorced my first wife waiting for Johnette...still waiting!!! Truly incredible presence and voice.

  • Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows

  • she's incredible!!!!!!!

  • I am not so much for covers and to be honest I have not heard many covers that come anywhere close to the originals. This one however is as good as the original and that is a huge compliment , coming from a die hard Cohen fan. She LIVES every single note with every cell. Simply amazing!

  • OMFG

  • P.s. she is sexy as hell. Don't be expecting some old lady or something cause she has personality and vibe and the VOICE to launch a thousand ships

  • OH MY GOD JUST SAW CONCRETE BLONDE LIVE A WEEK AGO! BEST NIGHT OF MY LIFE! I've listened to Johnette since I was a baby, my dad's listened to her for 25 years, her stage presence is absolutely remarkable, Jim is so rad (he gave me his guitar pick), and Gabriel is pretty awesome. If any of you get a chance, go see them!!!

  • Everybody knows the good guys lost...

  • 1st...@lifeislikeabeanstalk, AMEN!

2nd...this is how Johnette is everytime I have seen her sing...extraordinary, is not truly indicative of the absolute vocal power and stage presence this beautiful soul has.

    Music nowadays lacks soul...period!

CCB is touring again...see them...it will change you!

  • 20 people who wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the arse clicked dislike on this.

  • @wynternight777 They wouldnt know shit from good chocolate....

  • @wynternight777 yep.

  • great cover

  • I know the words but never felt it before

  • What a talented singer. And SEXY too!! A double threat!!!

  • Well-done Leonard Cohen cover, Concrete Blonde is the shit!

  • OMG... That was just beautiful.

@JCKronin. My chills started at 2:13.

J'adore Concrete Blonde. Simply awesome. Matches Cohen's meaning implicitly.

    Thanks.

  • mr. demille, i think she's ready for her close-up!

used to have every CB album back in my twenties and love their stuff! they really put out some good music. this however, represents a really low-moment for mtv unplugged and that's saying something.

the EXTREMELY melodramatic "crazy-eyed" mugging. makes me feel like im watching nancy pelosi on karaoke night. she was obviously exceeding the recommended dosage here.

gong to switch over and listen to the studio version which is awesome.

  • i'm seeing her in concert tmrow for the first time. if she's half as good as this awsome effort, i can't wait..... She's touring oz for 20 yrs of bloodletting. doesn't time fly.

  • her hair short looks awsome

  • Bob Ross. Huh? What? Anyway, Don Henley's got nothin' on Johnette Napolitano. What a rendition!

  • why is this lady making overtly creepy faces as if she's playing the witch on the Wizard of Oz?

  • If they didn't know then, I'm sure "everybody knows" now. What a voice!

  • sexiest woman in rock n roll-ever

  • Stunning.

I have posted about a month ago, but it has to be said again.

    STUNNING!.

  • whoever thumbed this down is a dick

  • hm as a chanson,I like it!

  • Is that James Mankey on guitar?

  • @TheHammerheart Thanks! What terrific band. How sad that such a terrific live group didn't get more quality footage. I put CCB up with any live act I have ever seen. Johnette did a show in LA a few years ago that was one of the best gigs this city ever saw.

  • @Lifeislikeabeanstalk YES, it is!!!!!! Amazing cover of a Leonard Cohen CLASSIC!

  • I bet she owns a cat, wears patouli oil, has posters with moons on them, burns candles, has under arm hair, eats alfalfa sprouts and is pro choice....

  • For someone who rarely used a hand held mic- her mic technique is perfect.

  • I LOVE JONNET NAPOLITANO

  • i've heard a few versions of this leonard cohen song, and this is by far the very best. i can't help but feel that old leonard is one of the few songwriters who can write a song that is like a shell, and then the right artist comes along who can just pour an infinite amount of emotion into it, and make it real. Johnette makes it real. she makes every song real!

  • @raphael13377

    Right on!.

  • @twinstu50 thanx twinstu. pulled me out to revisit the vid -- gives me goddamn chills every time i listen to it ... it's for anyone who's ever been burned by someone, and i mean lowdown, dirty, burned-a-hole-in-your-soul kind of burned. god i love this woman.

  • @raphael13377 I don't know who you are, but I love you. That was perfectly said. Have you heard her version of Janis' "Mercedes Benz"? She puts JANIS to shame. And that ain't easy.

  • @setialphasix thanx for the ref. i checked out her Benz. very, very good. better than janis for sure. for me, the song itself is not a fav, tho. how about Little Wing? check out johnette's version of it from the essential album... just magnificent. her guitarist, James Mankey is a first class act, usually cool and somewhat understated. on little wing he shows his stuff and johnette shines shines shines....

  • @raphael13377 Oh yeah, heard it a billion times! I'm from Los Angeles, and we used to go see them when they were just Dream 6, playing at the Whiskey, lol. I've got every album, t-shirt, and DVD they ever released! Love Little Wing! Check out her other Jimi cover, "Castles Made of Sand". She and Jim really GET Jimi, and make it even MORE amazing. Also check out her side project "Pretty and Twisted" and "Concrete Blonde y Los Illegals" for some great tracks, and her duet with the Talking Heads!

  • @setialphasix a core fan, u'r so rare these days! almost llike an endangered species :) i did check out her work with the heads. excellent. u can be sure i'll get to the rest. and u know, the more i listen to jim on various tracks, the more i realize what a cool player he is, he gives himself entirely to the song, nothing more nothing less. no pizzaz if the song aint about pizzaz.. i can hear why u never let these guys go, but follow them for years... thanx for trippin on my ears.

  • Love it, simply love it.

One hundred years from now people will still be watching this clip as it contains so much heart which is a hard commodity to come by.

Definitely a term of reference regarding our era and the way real music is being played.

Thank you CB, sunshine sometimes appears from unexpected areas.

  • I commented on this about 6 or so months ago.

Came across it again just now.

    As before, OH WOW!

  • Man, she absolutely nails this song! This is without a doubt the BEST version of this song I have ever heard, by any artist. Thank you for contributing all your talents Johnnette. I still listen to Concrete blondes in my car from time to time and am amazed at the talent of the band.

  • I love both Concrete Blonde and Bob Ross, so I'm kinda sorry you cut it off.

  • @OgreVI lol!!!!

  • She has one of the most underrated voices ever. Her voice and lyrics drip and flow with emotion.

  • Caught the Colorado show, it was awsome, best concert, she was on top, thanks for such a great show Johnette!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She missed the song ....

  • I had the privilege of seeing her last night in Dallas at The Granada. She is STILL amazing. Hasn't lost a step.

  • @cd97peace I would give my left ear to see her live. she is beautiful to watch on you tube. live johnette must be amazing. I'm an aussie and i guess she'll never come here to visit or play. lucky you...

  • @eddiemoore71 Jonette is amazing live. I'm an aussie as well and saw her play live 3 times at the Corner Hotel in Richmond in Melbourne back in the 90's before Joey as part of their 'Free' tour. Got to meet her and she was everything I expected and then some. Concrete Blonde toured Oz a few times and I believe Jonette did a solo tour here last year as well.

  • @powerline100works. say it isn't so. johnette came to oz and i missed her. pls can someone confirm. I missed her tour in the 90's coz it was the time they broke up. due to come but cancelled. you are a lucky cat, powerline. i love her talent. thnx for info

  • @eddiemoore71 Hey Eddie, I missed her last year as well, as I didn't know she was doing a solo tour until after the fact. Hopefully she will come again soon. 20 years since Bloodletting. Incredible. It feels like only yesterday.

  • I can't believe it's been 20 years since Bloodletting.

  • Just returning from the "25 years of Bloodletting" tour in Atlanta this eve.......fabulous!! She is as awesome as ever. Such an extraordinary lyricist and performer. It was certainly a privileged to see her this evening. If you get a chance to catch this tour...JUST DO IT!!!

  • @DarkLadyMorticia I caught the Salt Lake City show on 6/22 it was amazing!!! (and it's 20 years, not 25) :)

  • holy kwrap, amazing. i loved this in the 80s, but i was too young to really understand how good it is.

  • i saw this shit when i t first aired ...I have been looking for it for years. nice.

  • The Greatest Voice in Music. Long Live the Great Johnette.

  • Compared to this...everybody who's ever been on American Idol...SUCKS!!!

  • "(don't mind bob at the end)"??????,................How could anyone have a problem with the "happy little trees" man. matter of fact i'm going to do a you tube search of Mr. Bob Ross now.

  • Especially good live....Wow for Johnette!!!

  • This woman is a mainstay in my music collection.

As much as I would llke her to be known by everyone, I am glad that my friends don

    t know who she is...

that makes her music that much more mine ...he he he.

    This woman is phenominal !!!

  • LOVE Concrete Blonde! Johnette had me at God is a bullet more than 20 years ago.

  • the amazing johnette.........

such a great talent and amazingly wonderful voice !!!!!!!!

  • wow...thats the best version of that song i've ever heard!120 mintutes, those were the days.

  • Wicked chorus. Chills

  • Fucking brilliant. 'Nuff said.

  • Leave it to an ignorant mainstreamer to call himself a hippie and then dis the best singer of this decade and then some!!!!!!! And who the hell is debra winger I dont now anything she's done....Oh excuse me I dont watch tv or mainstream crappolla movies LOLOLOLOL

  • @ohravenous1

LOL, she's an actress. I dont see the resemblance though

  • flawless

  • She nailed it.

  • Wow...just...Wow....

  • Can someone please convince this amazing Goddess Woman that she can't live without me?.......please?

  • Probably one of the best live performances ever... Her voice is amazing and spot on!

  • Thank you so much for posting. What a powerful voice. Love how she feels the music!

  • I actually remember when this came on 120 minutes. I really doesn't seem so long ago, but I guess it is.

  • She drags notes out, beats them senseless, and forces them to bend to her will.

    She's awesome.

  • @AerowsX ~ Stated about as well as it can be stated!

  • @AerowsX You nailed it with that one, man. You and the person calling it "velvet-wrapped razor blade". AWESOME!!!!

  • My very favorite long, lost performance!! Love Johnette!

  • todo el mundo sabe que el amor por tus venas, jamás paso....y desdes luego es una........ ;-)
