This was a problem when he was trying to unite Libya with other Arab states such as Egypt and Syria, the leaders of which didn't want any religious role in the government.

What happened in Libya does not resemble in any way what happened in the Eastern Bloc during the late 80s revolutions. It was not a popular uprising as much as it was a NATO sponsored change of regime. Even "rebels" have claimed that they are not supported by the majority of Libyans and that is an important fact to take into account.

Because USSR's intervention in crushing dissent there and the Warsaw's pact involvement in Czechoslovakia in 1968 are much closer to what is happening now in Libya, than what happened in the 1980's. It's a military alliance supporting and furthering its interests within a country through a government compatible to them.

I don't support NATO's bombings, they fight for the interests of big oil capitalists. But the reasons for the 2011 Libyan revolution are NOT WRONG. We talk about a people who had enough of 42 years of dictatorship. Gaddafi's Jamahiriya was a lie, it was never a state of the masses.

And, as much as I agree with you on the falsehood and courrpt nature of the Jamahiriya, it is also a fact that this "reviolution" wasn't nearly as popular as it is often claimed and certainly was not carried succesfully by its people. If a sufficiently large portion of the Libyan populace had been sufficiently dissatisfied with Gaddafi's rule, it wouldn't have taken a single foreign bomb to topple him. It took months of NATO bombings.
