Can't believe I'm finding so many great versions of this song on Youtube that I wasn't aware of before. Love the Small Faces, and they do this very well indeed. Steve Marriott had such a brilliant soulful rock voice, and he really puts it over ! ... Wayne
Eh, I don't even know how old you guys (and gals?) making comments about who's more soulful and whatnot, y'all are looney for that. They are both soulful. Timi and Steve. Ya bloodclots, fire burn ya!
I dont get it. Why do rock groups always frown when they photo for an album cover? Why the serious expressions on their faces? Wouldn't the album sell better if they would smile in the photo shoot?
Just floors you every time...how YOUNG Steve is here. Puts Sha-la-la-la-lee in the basement.....does anyone have access to audio of Steve in "Oliver"? That would be great to hear.
Parts of "Consider Yourself" sung by Steve at about 12 or 13 have been out here, but they seem to end up getting pulled. To tell you the truth, though, he sounded like a fairly ordinary Artful Dodger. He had a good voice as a kid, but it apparently didn't get interesting until after it changed. And then it matured incredibly fast.
How Lionel Bart found Steve singing on the street is so cool. But, this track sounds nothing like Oliver I guess! I'm always amazed at the BIG soulful voice coming from such a teeny guy. His energy (piss and vinegar!) so much bigger than his size. I drove to Buffalo last year to see Mac, and my gawd, tickets were $17 for such a legendary keyboard man. SHAME! But I think his "Never Say Never" album has done well...good on 'im! He's a lovely guy - friendly, full of stories
@padraiggillon - Thanks for that. I've always wanted to hear or see a bit of Steve in Oliver. Amazing how his voice went from high, to that of an old black blues singer. Too bad he was so impulsive and left the SF's - I think they could have gone back to their original soul/blues/rock style and done many more great tunes.
Sorry, Timi fans, but 18 year old Steve Marriott stole this and kept it for himself. As he often did. And I suppose it's only fair because he ended up one of the most ripped off guys in history of rock and roll.
@petey1892 very credible cover. but no, it's not as good as timi's original....and part of it was the utterly perfect Spector production. There's also the not so small matter that it's a song sung by a woman about a guy. And say what you will, but Steve just isn't a gal.
@Martywt43 Steve Marriott was only about 5'3" himself (he was billed as 5'4", but that was stretching the truth) and he had one of the biggest voices in the history of rock and roll. Personally, I think his timing is a bit off here, but he was clearly one of the greatest, if the not the greatest, blue-eyed soul singers of all time.
No friggin' way. This cover is competent, but it lacks the operatic drama of the original. The percussion in particular is no where close to the original.
This def buries the original. Fuckin loads of balls especially when it goes to the bridge. I have to put this on full blast everytime i hear it. Fuckin tops!!
This is a fine version of the old Timi Yuro hit. Anybody have the Del Shannon version from his "Live In London" CD? That may be the best cover of this song that I have ever heard.
Heard this song about 20 times today, not just in this version, and it's still isn't enough!
of course it's not the best of SF, but it's great, Steve's voice is moving

@Deena777 Timi Yuro loved the version by Elkie Brooks. She got in touch with Brooks to tell her so.The two became friends.

Nowhere near as good as the Timi Yuro original, but quite a good offering. Much better than the A side.

mertonparka 3 years ago 8
I think Marriott is paying tribute to someone who influenced his singing. They both had extremely powerful voices.
Anytime Marriott did a remake it was a tribute, and in my opinion an improvement upon what went before. As it should be!
