  • the characters for "chikan" literally seem to be in Japanese, the character for dirty or deranged. Then the second character is clearly the character for Chinese (kan; han). The same character found in Kanji.

Can someone now please use their knowledge of Japanese kanji to tell me, in as pretentious a way as possible, that I've somehow misinterpreted this, and chikan (which I know means groping) does not in fact have its etymological roots in something equivalent to "filthy chink"?? I await.

  • @Floodlezoot You have to separate the character chikan in two, chi kan. chi means kind of groping, pervert, moron, stupid etc, and kan just means men in this case. So chikan is "guys who grope women". kan itself does not have a negative meaning. for example, there is a word "seigikan" which means a man of justice. Sorry for my bad English explanation..

  • @marybell119 That's very doubtful. It's possible that the sound "kan" has multiple possible kanji for that same sound, and one of them is "guy".......

However, I've seen the kanji for this term "chikan" and the "kan" in it is the very same "kan" that is in the word KANJI, which means Chinese characters.

You can wag the dog, spin, and barrel roll til the cows come home, but the kanji don't lie, and that kan is the symbol for China, historically.

  • @Floodlezoot Yes I know the same chinese character 漢 is used for both "chikan" and "kanji", and as you say 漢 has a meaning of chinese or China, but 漢 certainly means man(guy) at the same time in Japanese. In this case, chikan means "guy who grope" and as an antonym we often say "chijo" which means nympho woman who grope or just a stupid woman. That's why I think my explanation does make sense.

  • @Floodlezoot I just checked up the origin of 漢(han) in Chinese and found it also has a meaning of an adult guy same as in Japanese. 漢 itself does never mean what you call "filthy chink". What I doubt is your character.. it is very rude to chinese people. If you are not yet convinced at all and still so set on the authenticity of kanji, ask chinese people the same question. The origin of kanji is in chinese after all. Japanese just seasoned it to our taste for ages :)

  • @marybell119 It reminds me of the Japanese term for wall-eyed.

The say London-Paris (rondon pari). Explanations for this always say some nonsense about imagining one eye looking to London and the other to Paris. Well, again, maybe I'm a little cynical, but that is a load of dog shit.

It's London-Paris because early Japanese visitors to European capitals thought the people, or a lot of them, had googly eyes going in different directions. Now we tell politically correct lies..

  • @Floodlezoot Is it only me who have no idea why now you bring up London-Paris view? lol ok maybe I am not clever enough to understand your logic, so I just accept you as a kind of deep thinker for everything and admit what you believe right is right and wrong is wrong. There's no point arguing on different planes.

  • You say women strange.

  • your girlfriend speaks にほんご too?! you guys are too cool!!!

  • Fun fact: In Osaka we have 女性専用車一日中、Woman only cars all day long.

  • Those guys on the Woman only place.. o_o' that girl surrounded by them sure did look uncomfortable..

  • @xTenshiAi lolwut? No she didn't. Also it's not a woman only car. You can join your female friends as a male, as clearly written on the rules on the wagon itself. Also if you are male and handicapped you can also use the woman only wagon. It's not so much a woman only car, it's more of a "weak people" car. (Bring on the thumbs down, but I didn't come up with those rules) Actually you'd be surprised how many woman actually choose NOT TO use it.

  • @sickmonkey thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding ^^'

  • @sickmonkey not really...some women actually dont wanna be thought of as weak...up yours gloria steinem where ever you are

  • @LordChristan1 and of course some want to get felt up lol

  • @LordChristan1 I was quoting the rules. Japan is a country where women are still seen as the weaker of the races. Not my words. Not my rules.

  • lol I make those "Origami" with the tickets, everytime I travel by bus :D

  • When I went in Tokyo in the women only subway car there were men too. And in my city (Brighton Uk) there are buses that run using used cooking oil!

  • I know this comment's like super late, but why were those dudes in the womens only train!!!

  • when I finish high school I wanna go to Japan. And stay for like three months xD

  • we got some buses on water too here in holland

  • wow. didnt thought that exist. in my country we use gasoline and diesle. we also dont have the woman only thing on buses.

  • I think you will find that the bus runs on Hydrogen and produces water as exhaust.

  • We don't have the women only subway car, but we have the buses on water (hydrogen)...in Hamburg, Germany ;)

  • I don't think you are supposed to be so loud in Japanese subway. You'd better pretend you are drunk too lol.

  • lmao @ 0:57, white girl staring at u funny lol

  • @lucirz that's his girlfriend ;p

  • OMG in korea everyone sleeps in the trains or either reads or either listen to their headphone, if they talk people will shout at them to be quite so in korea its so quite in busses and trains damn (or if you are some bug guy that looks like a bear then they will not mind =D )

  • they have woman only cars in Mumbai, India too!! Only difference= it's not as clean or nice..women are rough there..they will claw at you to get a damn seat.

  • Ur video looks pretty nice, I think I'll subscribe to ur channel.

But It's really weird for me to see someone so loud inside the

train in Japan. Does anyone look at u weirdly when u do this ?

  • oh, this poor dolt faggot with eyes on the side of his head doesn't know what he's talking about

  • @aallppiinnee hes a quarter japanese and was born there so pretty sure he knows what hes talking about

  • It's women only so that at peak traffic times they don't get touched up XD

  • its considered rude and impolite to be loud and/or talk on your cellphone in japanese subways and train cars, probably why that guy in the background was staring at you.

  • clean subway. good short video.

  • Retarded

  • Hey thanks chris for posting this. I read about the woman only carts before somewhere on the internet. very interesting stuff culture wise.

  • Comment removed

  • Haha it's like agony to my hears hearing you act like a typical american tourist in the end, when your japanese is at a native level XD! もっと日本語しゃべてほしいんだけど、おねがいします!

  • i watch you're videos..and i really wonder..what im doing in the uk..That is genius..one day..that is all..Thank you ^_^

  • OMG! Japanese do such GREATEST inventions! ^c^ And a WOMAN ONLY subway? AWESOME!

  • you know why they have these women only subway cars? because there's alot of perves in Japan that gropes women in the subway

  • Japan is so cool. I will one day go there. seriously its one of the coolest places to live in.

  • you have women only bus for japan? in my islamic country we have similar. we have bus only for men, women do walk for protect.

  • do you get racism in Japan?

  • lol. u look like ur pretending to be interested.. a fake laugh sorta situation :|

  • these people on the train must love you for talking so loud. MUAHAHAAAAAAA

  • At least all the perverts will know where the women are after 5pm ;)

  • Japanese people are so cool...First they build a life size gundam then they build a hydro car cool beans.

  • haha its so funny how you pretend you dont speak Japanese.

    Him: "Origami"

    You: "Origami!?!?!?!"

  • my country totally sucks!=O

  • Ok, those water powered busses are not new for me. We have that in Germany too - but only experimental. But I've never seen a women only car on a subway train. We have women's parking areas and taxis but no train carts.

    Pretty interesting!

  • I make paper ducks out of every ticket I get, but I don't hand 'em to people :P I just leave 'em there.

  • a women only train car seem really control freakish...: /

The water powered bus is awesome though! : )

  • I'm guessing the purpose is the same as women only taxis etc, for women to have safer transport home at night. (He did say it was women only after 5pm, right?)

  • The women's only car is in order to protect women who are afraid to ride the subway at night because of chikan.

Its not for the sake of separating woman and men.

  • @GumdropGhost and sexual harrasment

  • I love how you get a nifty little origami from a stranger while riding on the train.

  • Did you pretend not being able to speak Japanese when that guy gave you that paper crane? lol

  • i totally did! lol That's so great you noticed that. I was wondering if anyone would!

  • Yea.. I was wondering you just said thank you to the guy lol. Why exactly did he give it to you?

  • that's bad lol you should let people know you're fluent :p

  • It's probably to make the guy feel special because in Japanese culture it's more polite to exhalt the other person and lower yourself.

    Yeah, chikan suck! Pervs. Haha.

  • so do you hear comments from people like "stupid tourists" or stuff like that

  • @TokyoStreetTV I noticed that too XD I thought, why don't you speak Japanese to him? and then I assumed it was because he was good at English, maybe he is?

  • sugoi
