@TheParakeetfreak Females are very territorial and need a lot of space. I'd recommend a very large cage -- even bigger than you think they need. Also recommend feed them carrots and things they can gnaw on to alleviate tension. =)
@Budgie4EVER Thank you! I just hand-fed the yellow birds millet yesterday, all three crowded close, and Sunshine sitting on my hand (while my kids hand-fed the other birds millet.) The birds are so sweet--there's nothing like it. =)
@fckt3hp0l1c3 Yep, he was, and he's still the littlest of the bunch, but he's doing great. Twix we ended up referring to as "Twix the Bold." He's one of those rare personalities that nothing phases him. They're all so unique.
Cotton looks EXACTLY like my parakeet girl which I named Puppy (because puppies are cute and so are parakeets :D). I got Puppy from some stupid owners who tortured her... She can't fly and bit me very often, but now she's calm (well, female parakeets always get a bit cocky but she's not aggressive anymore) and she likes sitting on my shoulder watching tv - she's just as lazy as I am :)
@BigBlueChippy92 I'm so glad you adopted Puppy and she's not with cruel owners anymore. That the sits on your shoulder after that says a lot about her trust in you. It's wonderful when that relationship finally happens. =)
@44khanjee While we fed the babies, the parents had time to eat and rest, which they very much needed. New bird parents can get skinny and exhausted caring for a clutch of chicks.
How did you do for the last egg to hatch without the mother parakeets warmth? Also what did you use to give warmth to the baby parakeets without the mother parakeet? And lastly, how did you feed squirt as he was very little?
@TheEddymu I set the wooden nesting box on top a heating pad set on low, and covered the nesting box with a towel. The baby parakeets stayed nicely warm, and I washed my hands in very warm water before I held them so my hand would help keep them warm while they ate. I fed Squirt with a medicine dropper--tiny little amounts of very watered down food at a time, immediately followed by warm water so he wouldn't choke on the food. As they grow, it becomes easier and easier to feed them.
Good job! (on both the video and the budgies.) I feed a cooked mash (basically rice and eggfood with veggies) to my parent birds - especially with a clutch this large - so it's easier for them to ingest enough food to sustain themselves and the chicks.
it is true animals do love you when you show love to them i love my bunny he is spoiled and so are my sister's cocktails we have 14 eggs we take real good care of the mother the father is getting older but the mom has a lot of hope that the baby's will hatch i have my hopes high it's been 2 month's since the eggs they have been moving around 5 have already got out btw what happen the last bird that was born did it live? i seemed in good shape
1 of my budgies i have was given from some old woman because she was moving into an old home last year, my mams a vet nurse, it has an orange band on it, does that mean it was born in 2010? hasnt got any letters or numbers on it.
@6reevesy9 Every breeder's band has different colors and numbers, so bands don't indicate year of birth. A young keet less than 1 yr old will have little stripes on top its head which recede as the bird matures. Shortly after one year old, most of the stripes are gone. Also the cere (the area with the nostrils right above its beak) will become a prominent color for adult birds--dark blue for males and usually rose or brown for females. That indicates the keet is probably more than 1 yr.
Cool :) I would like to start breeding some day I just need some advice I have a male bird he's still young possibly 5months his name is blu I'm still waiting for him to grow cuz I read on the internet that he has to be more then a year old to have babies and do they need to buy a nest or can you just make a box with the little wood stuff currently my parakeet blu isn't tamed yet (I just got him 4days ago) and I was wondering if that was a problem. Oh and if your asking why I want to breed, it'
@themike2048 Hi, Mike! Congrats on new bird! Birds are not mature until 14+ months old. Can't be certain of gender till then (the ceres on ours kept changing colors till they were 14+ mos). To put them with an older mate could traumatize them (females can be very aggressive), and they could be too immature to care for babies, so do suggest wait till 14+ mos old. Nesting box with pine bedding works great. I tried to breed mine, but work was 24/7 with little sleep, so I just enjoy them now. =)
@WindsInHerHair Thanks, this really helped! I know they have to be a bit mature but once a year passes then I'll be able to begin breeding. But i just got a Female bird and lucky for me shes not aggresive, well at first she was but afterwards she wasnt, it only took a day to tame her. Shes a very nice bird and loving, her name is Jlo and im guessing 5-6 months old. she looks a lot bigger then blu by accouple inches. So for the nest all i need is a box and some wood chips? Well thanks again :)
@themike2048 Glad to! I have 7 adult females. They're sweet as can be until breeding season (which is Sept to March), then they attack the males like velociraptors! LOL! It scares the males so bad they run for the hills. Yep, nest box and pine bedding. I tried other "recommended" nesting materials, but all my females ignored it (I'm pretty sure one even rolled her eyes). They like the wood chips. =)
@mrrigobo Our parakeets love romaine lettuce, carrots, corn on the cob, oranges . . . many fruits and veggies, though some are harmful. If you search online, you'll find even more foods they enjoy and that are healthy for them. They REALLY love corn on the cob. =)
@adtrkennedy It was terribly sad when the father died. He was old and weak and hardly able to move, but he wouldn't stop taking care of the babies, bringing them food, and trying to keep them warm.
@WindsInHerHair I had two budgies a couple years ago and basically the same thing happened. The mom got sick all of a sudden and she passed away while they were still babies and even 1 more egg to hatch. Dad became the new mommy. He fed them and kept them warm. Luckily one of her older daughters pitched in and hatched the last egg like it was her own. I'm sorry about your loss. I hope your other budgies are doing well x
@adtrkennedy I'm sorry about your loss too. Some folks are dog people, and some folks are cat people, but we bird people sure love our keets. I'm so glad to hear your parakeet dad has also been a great one. =)
@17buckbuck You cannot tell a parakeet's gender until it is about a year old. Then, the cere (the small pink fleshy part with nostrils at the top of its beak) will gradually turn dark blue if it is a male, and dark pink or brown if is a female. This is a generality, not an absolute, as one of our parakeets with aqua blue feathers has a blue cere but is a female. If you Google "how to tell a parakeet's gender," you'll find some excellent information and photos of different colored birds and cere.
Squirt was simply the last one who hatched. Since all the chicks including her were hand-fed, she ate as much as her sisters, and she caught up to them (in weight) fast. She's still cute as a button. =)
