  • the music is very good but your jeans is horrible, you must buy a new jean!!!!

  • i like those pants... and that rickenbacker

  • only a smiths fan would wear those jeans, i loved it.

  • I'm not interested in his pants I'm interested in his guitar playing.

  • Stop knocking the flares! I want some too :D

  • love your vids mate. what amp are you using in your videos? cheers.

  • They're just jealous of your playing so they knock your flares. I think the part sounds much better without Morrisissey singing over it.

  • great sound

  • dude that was awesome

  • I met Johnny Marr. He signed my wallet.

  • Beautiful guitar, beautiful sound and those trousers are just ahead of their time my friend, I used to have some bad boys back in tha day but they are rockin and a' rollin all by themselves!!

  • Maybe some of the critics on here should worry more about their playing, and less about their looks. But you probably buy records based on the album cover. Keep up the good work Daniel.

  • duude i started singing along... super close to real johnny

  • What Amplifier do you play through? Cause you are getting quite a harsh glary sound, which sort of ruins the feel of the song, no offence. Cause i have noticed other people on youtube get a sweeter sound more like the smiths. So yeah, what amp do you play through? and do you use any pedals/effects?

  • how old are you?are you a teenager?

  • @MrMarrman1 - To find out the answer to this and other questions, why not check out my channel page, which you can get to by clicking on my username.

  • @danielearwicker hi thanks i was gonna say if u were a teen you would be outstanding at guitar! this is a really good cover by the way..

  • @danielearwicker i like your jeans, keep them

  • I would love to hear him play "Let me Kiss you" By Morrissey!!!!!!

  • @Pammykinns58 Thats cool! +1

  • squire vista venus makes a better 12 string.

  • if there's a heaven it will be located entirely inside this guitar which would be constantly playing Smiths songs.

  • flawlessly executed, great lesson...! I never took the time to figure it out, those chord changes sounded so alien....Thanx for sharing, I'm getting busy....

  • give up life is a bad mistajke...i love when morrissey sings that part, anyway really great vids you got bro. nice rickenbacker 2!

  • marr's guitar is almost talking, he said he wanted his notes to be emotional. This is hynoptic

  • those pants are something else

  • @capocamilo - that's what I keep trying to tell people! They're not like other items of clothing. They're "something else". You shouldn't judge them by the same criteria. They follow their own rules. Sometimes they walk around by themselves.

  • what can i say about the denims Daniel..........."Jeans".. the low life has lost its appeal , nifty playing once again

  • @danielearwicker

They're not like "The Wrong Trousers" from the Wallace and Gromit short film are they? Because then you'd be in real trouble if a penguin used them to commit a jewelry heist. Ha Ha Ha! Oh, and excellent videos, amazing guitar playing! :-)

  • +5 for the beautiful rickenbacker

    +1000 for the song choice

    -100 for those jeans

  • Why are people so negative about my groovy flares? People should search google images for pictures of Jimmy Page in his pomp - my jeans are nothing compared to some of his kecks!

  • flares are cool but not multi fabric ones ;)

  • @danielearwicker no doubt youd be the talk of the town in the late 60's..as for the 2010's...not so much hahaha

  • Very Byrds-ish. Pretty fantastic.

  • i love singing to your renditions brill cheers!

  • some of the notes sound an octave higher? more lush! is that how u tuned the rickenbacker? im still hankering for the 660/12 but no luck yet! ;) tell me if my ears are ok!!

  • @spillandambience - You are right. On a normal 12, the high E and B strings are paired with identical strings, usually slightly detuned to make it sound swirly. The remaining 4 strings are paired with octave-higher strings. In this vid it's the same scheme applied to open E tuning, then a capo to bring it up to D.

  • @danielearwicker thanks for that! u really are my hero!!!! lol! :)))

  • i love it, i love the blurriness of it too, its a swirling dream state of smithtastic sugar!!!!!!!!!

  • Were you whistling at points through this video?

  • Excellent version. Pretty much perfect I think. Rickenbackers are the coolest, classiest guitars. Johnny Marr would be happy with this.

  • Daniel: Are you in an alternate tuning on this one? other versions suggest open E (w/o capo). Also, may I kindly have my "Mr. Sparkle" tee shirt back? It's been gone way too long Arigato...

  • sounds good but way too much fx, sounds too swamped, play it dryer like the great JM used to live, dont try to recreate the studio version on 1 guitar using fx it wont work, otherwise great IMO and please dont take that as a bad criticism because you play it real well 5/5 from me

  • You may prefer my more recent covers - this is the first one I did, a single take recorded on an early digital camera - a lot of the sound here is the plectrum hitting the strings!

  • sweet~

    we're imune to fashion

    rise above the bullshit

  • I hope you have burned those awful excuse for a pair of trousers since this video was made

  • very cool!!!!!!

  • los pantalones culiaos feos XD

  • Johnny Marr would be proud.

  • Well played, and I like the pants.

  • the tunning is open e but can you still play w/ capo on 2nd??

  • its tuned to open d, capo the 2nd=open e. nuff said

  • Sounds great but you need new pants, bro.

  • Nice job! Just bought a 330/12 off ebay and can't wait to play with it. Are you using standard tuning?

  • I think it's in Open E

  • sounds great but i hate hearing the strings acoustically.

  • excellente! now look at radioheads efforts at this and piss yourself. Go Johnny!

  • Dead on.

  • is there any change in the tune?

  • Good job, good job.

  • hahaha

  • Marrs? is that you?

  • sounds great..

  • excelent...waht should i buy a 12 string electric or a 12 string electric/acoustic?

  • just use a chorus pedal! just playing. Your good

  • EXCELLENT

  • Awesome.

  • You may not be a videographer but that was some nice work. 330s have that arresting sound. Nice, bro...

  • where the fuck can i find the correct tab for this song

  • Sweet.. thanks.. wish I could play that

  • please have a pop at these things take time, i'm struggling to make it sound like a song and not a durge!

  • Excellent. What is the tuning? Whaa. I want to play it. Tell us. Love this song.

  • Two questions: How can I get that Smiths sound on my guitar and what tuning is this song in?

  • thats just the sound of the guitar. and i think its open D.

  • nice picking

  • set fire to those jeans

  • good call pal those jeans need a good arse wiping

  • amazing playing but those trousers are horrific :-)

  • hahah i never noticed them...they're really goofy but then again he can play the headmaster ritual and has a sick guitar so its all good

  • VERY COOOL! =)

  • Nice, but it seems no one can make a Ric sound good like Peter or Johnny. That's why I'm a Gibson man.

  • Don't judge Rics based on this video, the sound quality is appalling. It was recorded on a compact camera and the sound of the plectrum hitting the strings is clearly audible...

  • epic win

  • Marry me? Please? Wouldn't have to buy me a thing, just serenade me nightly?

  • what is this tuning?

  • TUNED UP TO E.

  • Flawless victory!

  • That's soooo Great! Does your band cover a lot of smiths?

  • That's bloody beautiful mate. It looks effortless but I know it's not!

  • EXCELLENT!!!!

  • how much did that guitar cost?

  • Diggin the pants. lol. Great rendition of a great song. Radiohead has a pretty sweet one too. FYI

  • EXCELLENT!!!! Great work.... can't beat a 330...no way, nowhere, no how....

  • I. WANT. YOUR. GUITAR. BUT. IN. RED.

  • Take a look at Richard Snow and the In-Laws if you like the RickenbackerMusic at its best

  • Brilliant! (And one of my alltime favourite songs of one of my alltime favourite bands ;)

  • Fabulous, man! Awesome! Suddenly I got myself singing along with your amazing guitar skills! Not to mention one of the greatest Smiths' songs!

  • waste our time?

  • How could watching this video be a waste of anyone's time? Its fantastic! Loving the work, keep it up lad!

  • Sounds great!

  • How's that tuning set up man, it sounds brilliant? D A D G B E capo on 2nd fret?

I read that Marr recorded possibly 12 guitar parts for this song, in Simon Goddard's book.

  • Open D is D-A-D-F#-A-D. Since it's capo'd up two frets, it's open E.

  • wonderful!

  • Ok guys, I'm sure he is Johnny Marr hiding his face to preserve his identity.

  • Johhny Marr wouldn't resort to this. He's got better things to do i.e Modest Mouse

  • I payed one of these today at guitar center with an AC30......sooooooooooooooooooo excellent.

  • FAVOLOSO!!! BRAVISSIMO!!!!

  • da orgasmo

  • Dude, you've got huge f@cking Dumbo ears. You hear everything, therefore you play everything. Great job man!! I love your attention to detail. Keep it up.

  • The Smiths and Rickenbacker - an unbeatable combination.

  • Wow,this guy is good!!!!

  • nice work son!!

  • sorry but it's belligerent ghouls.

  • Belligerent goons run Manchester schools, spineless swines cemented minds...

  • playing through an AC30?

  • hey nobby if your watching, John Lennon had this guitar

  • No he didn't.

    He played a 325 Ric 6 string. George played a 360 12.

  • soz, I was just attacking someone who calls the beatles shit!

  • The "gay jeans" comment is pretty ironic if you take a look at the poster's screename. I'm just saying.

  • Thanks, Dan. With your help, I've worked out the non-capo version and it sounds great, too!

  • nice work dude. im gona record some vids of smiths too when i get my ricenbacker.

    what area u from?

  • great playing ! (flip the snare off.)

  • Those jeans are really gay

  • On "Who Put The 'M' In Manchester," Morrissey's band plays this in Standard Tuning.

I've no idea what to think anymore!!!

  • "The Songs That Saved Your Life" says Marr recorded it in Dropped D with capo on 2nd fret.

    Bigmouth Strikes Again!

PS To all the newbies out there, E major is E major no matter how you swing it :)

  • marr didnt play this charming man on a 330. he played it on a '52 tele

  • i used to be in a band and we were invited to johnny marrs house whilst recording our album. we used one of his guitars. whilst there he tuned a 12 stringer in by ears in about 2 minutes to perfection. it was unreal!!1

  • my good lord... smiths are awesome... but smiths on a 12 string??? it's just... too amazing. this video is awesome, and KEEP PLAYING THE SMITHS. learn pretty girls make graves! it would sound great on 12 string.

  • This song was original played on a 12 string so don't be too impressed! Pretty Girls Make Graves is 6 string though, sounds like Telecaster.

  • well either way, i'm saying it would sound good on a 12 string. i checked out your videos... "still ill" is by far my favourite, keep it up. you have some really sweet guitars by the way.

  • that would not sound good live, sorry.

  • It sounds fairly shit in my bedroom, IMO, so no need to feel sorry. The mic on the camera recorded the sound of the pick on the strings more clearly than it recorded the practice amp... but I just did it on a whim, and I keep it here because I like the off-the-cuff feel of it. Look for my 360 version for better sound (also fixed a mistake in one chord).

  • Hi, me again :)

How much did you pay for that guitar? Im really interested in getting one myself.

  • I think it was £1200 in about 2001, from Turnkey/Soho Soundhouse in London.

  • Oh. That´s quite a lot huh?

  • Great work mate.

  • seriously awesome! thanks for posting this

  • By the way, anyone wanting to see a good example of the twelve string rickenbacker in action should check out the "drive blind" live at brixton video by Ride, also on Youtube.

  • I see you have a capo on for this song. The tuning I've found to be most accurate is E B E G B E, no capo. What tuning are you using?

  • from low to high try E B E G# B E

  • At last a rickenbacker video on youtube of it being played like it was meant to be played - Thanks

  • A JOHNNY'S CLONE!! GREAT,MAN!

  • Kickass. Now I can play this song too. :)

  • perfect sound and my fave's smiths song , thanks for that!

  • sounds like shit with a thin pick

  • love the chords in this song!

  • I like that little piece of "Is It Really So Strange at the end. WOW!

  • I've watched this video about 59 times, and it keeps getting better every time I watch it. I've been playing The Smiths songs wrong for so long. Thanks for all of your posts.

  • Awesome...simply awesome!

  • Fantastic job! Could you possibly tell us where the tab is located?

  • perfect.

  • Excellent! Thanks for sharing this - it's one of my favourite Smiths songs & I spent ages trying to work this out in standard tuning until I read an interview with Marr & he said it was open D, capo 2nd! Love the Ric sound too.

  • So you going to tackle "How Soon is Now?" Very impressed with your "Headmaster Ritual". I'll think you are a God if you can pull of HSIN.

  • Awesome. I always understood this was one of the most difficult Smiths tunes. You master it perfectly.

  • Nice job..............:)

  • did you do it in standard tuning?

  • NICE JEANS DUDE...hehe

  • this kid kicks ass!

  • te felicito man, muy bien

  • Where did you get those pants?

  • LOL LMAO

  • Wow! Daniel I have to thank you: I wasted years trying to understand the chords changes (e=and even the chords themselves) of this great song. Now, because of you, I finally discovered the correct guitar tuning (open E) and now I can play the song as Johnny does!

What a revelation! I have listen to this song since the eighties!

    Thanks again!

  • Awesome guitar...I'm jealous of your talent

  • Wow!!! Keep posting. Almost as good as the concert footage

  • daniel, you should do barbarism begins at home, and do the bass and guitar parts for it, like you did on the nowhere fast video. i'm gonna subscribe!!

  • Okay, it's a deal!

  • top quality - ive been trying to master these tunes for years and never got close to how well you play them. nice one.

  • Thankz.

  • Brilliantness, mate. Sheer brilliantness.

  • Dude, you fucking nailed it. Awesome stuff :)

  • Great playing Daniel, however Marr actually tuned his guitar to open E to play this song. The noticeable abscence of a capo on live footage gives it away. I know it's only a tone up from open D, does it alter the sound? Not sure!

  • Sorry if this is geeky, but I eally don't recognize the chords... What's your tuning? Nice guitar and nice playing by the way!

  • Good guitar, good player! BUT Buy a normal amp!!!

  • Nothing wrong with the amp, the problem is that I recorded the video on a miniscule digital camera and I think I nearly blew up its built-in microphone.

  • Oops! Asked too fast! Open D, okay, now I know...

  • that was brilliant. Smiths reuniting 2007? it seems like the love is there..

  • Wow that was shit, where did you but those jeans?

  • Having just looked at your favourite videos, I'd be offended if you didn't think I was shit! :)

  • Now c'mon, play fair! Those vids are for my wonderful mother. Ye see she's technophobic so I try to accomodate her where possible, family get togrthers and the like. Now as for you... well, I just think you're a tad narcissistic. But if you want to join a band with me that would be great. Do you have any ideas for the name of our band? How about STOASMITHS? My lyrics are really good, some people think I sound like a young Gary Barlow, I wish..
