  • That looks painful.

  • Hi! Nice video. I got the same radio because of your videos! Got a question, how do I know what frequency/repeater to use for APRS? Thanks!

  • @sponklang77

the aprs network functions on 144.390, Its that freq for all across the USA. I think it might be different for other countries/areas.

  • @KC2UOO Thank you for your quick response. I tried sending you a message, not sure if you got it. Sorry for the late message. Hope you have a good day! 73's

  • Hi, this is Bob from Patagonia-Chile, what´s your opinion on the battery lasting on this particular HT ?, is there any thing you´d change or dislike on this model ? I wanna get one of those too. regards.... Bob

  • The VX8R is one of the best rigs I've ever owned! Love playing with the APRS.

  • The video was great! thanks. I suggest changing the title from messanging to messaging (no "n"), might make it easier or people looking or those search words.

  • Hi there, Is there a recommended setting for using the smart beaconing setting on the VX-8DR?

    73,

  • That sigh had me lol. :)

  • I have a question on the bluetooth aspect of this radio. Is it compatible with other bluetooth headsets or just with the ones yeasu makes?

  • I belive that "Space" is under 0 (Radio) pres it once for "0" and again for " " and then if you press "Mode, it'll leave a blank space. I hope that I havn't repeated what somebody has told you this as I've not seen all the Comments.

  • Hello. Thanks for your video. I just got my technician license and want to get my first radio. I was going to get a FT-60R, but it turns out that there is alot of 220 activity in my area (near Baltimore), so.... I would like to get something that can handle it. The VX-8DR was going to be my next radio after I got comfortable with the FT-60R, but I'm thinking I may as well dive right in. Do you recommend doing this? Is there a steep learning curve? 73, KB3VJN

  • @BGAndrea

there is a learning curve with everything.. is it hard to operate this radio? Nope. Does it take some time to read the manual and set things up? Yes.

I love the radio and now that I use it regularly I dont need to reference the manual for the things i do now so id say once you get it down.. its fairly easy to use.

btw congratulations on the Tech license!

  • What exactly is the dash and then the number for after the call sign? because i am reading the arrl technician book and i can not find it. is it in the general book?

i am trying to get a ham radio license up to al least up to general :)

  • @chelloplayer128 The dash and number are just used as an indentifyer. Example -7 is portal. -9 is mobile and there are a few more, those are the only two i use tho.

  • @KC2UOO Thanks for the info i am learning from the book and your videos you make really helpful videos and hope to see some more :)

  • If you want to add a space press zero twice :)

  • what would happen if you did not put any letters after the R, would you get the messages on all of your radios provided all of them were turned?

  • @cmritchie04 It would only send to the K2FR callsign, If one of my radios was setup and APRS'ing as just K2FR, id get the message there.

I dont know of any way to broadcast to any radio by that callsign, might be a neat feature tho.

  • Just because of your videos, I pulled the trigger on a VX-8R! Won it on an e-Bay auction; got the radio, shoulder mic, GPS unit, programming cable, software, and rapid charger for (ready for this?): $315!!! What a radio.... Today was my first day on APRS. I am a little confused, however, about the SSID. I live in Michigan (if that matters) and saw what the Digital Section of the ARRL suggests, but am still confused. Which SSID should I be using for a portable HT?

    Tnx n 72,

    Pete AA8GK

  • @rasputinsdog

As far as im aware Callsign - 7 is Portable Callsign - 9 is mobile/car

hope that helps! and 1+ for an awesome radio deal. nice!

  • @KC2UOO

Thanks so much. This is kinda confusing getting started!!! 72, Pete AA8GK

  • Can the radio be paired with a Bluetooth keyboard to make text entry easier?

  • I dont have the blue tooth module, that question would be best asked directly to Yaesu.

  • Great Video..Now I can even more out of my VX-8R.
