I agree about Obi Wan Nicolodi in The Third Mother! Other favourites? I've come to appreciate Stendhal Syndrome - and Sleepless is great ( but Tenebre, Deep Red and Suspiria remain the maestro's masterworks...)
my favorite would have to be Deep Red, can you tell me why susperia is a good movie i really dont get it, and in the trilogys do some of the same characters come out?
I definitely need to see Deep Red asap! I think my favorite is The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, it's his most solid thriller although there is not a lot of gore which will probably disappoint some people
I'm glad somebody finally stated what an underrated Film Trauma is. It's an amazing wonderful film. The story is fucking incredible, the score by pino dinnagio is hauntingly beautiful and the actors are just wonderful. I love how he incorporates the giallo genre into an american film. It gives the movie a quality that no other American film has. I have the exact sa,e collection and more minus blu-ray...but great collection.
Also wanted to say with two evil eyes, Romeros segment was just as brilliant, it fit his style, very creepshowesque, specially with adrian barbeau, I think she is brilliant in horror
Ok few things, first pronouncing giallo is like the sound yellow, at least as i heard some itallians in interviews pronounce it, like jallow, lot times it sounds like your saying Jolly. Not criticizing just saying thats how i heard it, My fav films of argento is Deep red and tenebrae, Agreed that workin with daria nicolodi and the goblins was part of making those movies good but with tenebrae the main actors character was awesome and made why i pick those as one of the best
@TheAlmightyFrowny the reason i say "gialli" which sounds like "jolly" is because that is the plural form of "giallo".. so when mentioning multiple giallo movies, the correct pronounciation is gialli which sounds like "jolly".. so just so you know, there are 2 ways to say that word.. but ya i agree tenebre is a really good movie all around, everythying about it is awesome. thanks for watching!
You are Professional as usual and really know the business. This was a Stretch for me since I don't know who this guy is... But Nonetheless you look Fabulous as always. Thanks! Blessings, ~Andree'
Oh and if you want to watch Do you like Hitchcock i think you can watch the entire film in one video here on youtube.... but... the film sucks..... like reallllly sucks.
Youre missing Sleepless. Its OOP and Cut here in region 1, if you have region free then head over to Amazon [dot] CO[dot]UK and order the edition from Arrow. its an amazing edition loaded with features and a full size poster.
they are also planing on releasing The Card Player (wich SUCKS, but im getting it for the AMAZING cover art on the ediiton), the stendhal syndrome (wich i still cant make my mind up on) and Opera wich i may hold off on cos i JUST got the Anchor bay limted edtion...
Oh and a giallo i would look into is All the Colors of the Dark, Blade of the Ripper ('The Strange Vice Of Mrs. Wardh), Short Night of Glass Dolls, Slaughter Hotel, Death Walks in High Heels, Deadly Sweet, Torso, The 10th Victim, French Sex Murders, The Case of the Scorpion's Tail, The Case of the Bloody Iris, In the Folds of the Flesh... and i could go on and on and on.. :S
He is an awesome director!! Suspiria is my favourite of his films and it creeps me out a bit. I actually was able to show some of Suspiria in my film class which was awesome!!
Great video! I just got the Dario Argento collection steelbook. I love Tenebre!!! my #1 fav Dario Argento movieis Suspiria. How was Is there any other Dario Argento move you would recomend?
@joshg123 inferno and suspiria have a few things in common. both good films. yeah i really enjoy phenomena, that ending is outstanding! tenebre is just totally shocking and brutal!
For me my favourite is between Phenomena and Suspiria. I think Goblin broke up in 1982 after Tenebrae, but it was1 of them that stayed on producing music for Argento. Theres also Demons 1&2, The Church and The Wax Mask that Argento wrote the screenplay for.
@ministryofdarkness85 goblin were at their best when they were together for sure. i thought demons was ok, havent seen demons 2 yet, the church was ok.. i hear lots of good things about wax mask. thanks!
if u can find wax mask on dvd it is OOP lucio fulci's died before directing it and dario argento did the screenplay it is part of the image euroshock collection
@heebieandjeebie lol i know what you mean, i can't stop buying dvds, theres always something in the mail on its way to my door! thanks for the recommendations
I've never seen any Argento flicks or "giallos" in my life (that I'm aware of), and never had any interest in them until recently, after hearing more about them on YouTube. But there's so many of them, it's overwhelming. Do you (or anyone else reading this) have any recommendations I can start with?
@qlwewlq let the next dvd you purchase be SUSPIRIA! its amazing. definitely start with dario argento films from the mid seventies to the early nineties. lucio fulci's DONT TORTURE A DUCKLING. Mario Bava's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE. just a few recommendations :)
@ILikeToDissectGirls some must-owns are "tenebre", "deep red", "opera" and "phenomena". get tenebre first! and some honorable-mentions are "trauma", "inferno" and "bird w/ the crystal plumage".
@suntanboyee22 I saw the two-disc of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage at Borders for like $30.00. I decided it couldn't possibly be worth it, so I didn't pick it up. I've seen it for cheaper on Amazon, so I'll probably buy it online sometime. Thanks for the suggestions.
@ILikeToDissectGirls yeah $30 for "bird" is a little steep. i bought the bluray for $20. i think i've seen the dvd for like $13 at used music stores and whatnot. but def stick to the "golden era" they are the best ones. welcome!
I love Mother of Tears. lol. Please check out SLEEPLESS. One of his best more recent films, other than the Masters of Horror episodes and MOT. Suspiria is my fav Argento and then all the others (besides a few, lol) are in 2nd place. I love Argento.
@MADPUPPETDETH i def don't dislike MoT, i'll have to give it another watch. i may have been comparing it to suspiria too much, which is NOT a good idea! i've been wanting to check out sleepless! i hear the US dvd is edited for gore :( is that the version you have? is it a problem? sleepless is the next argento movie i want to see tho! i heard a lot of great things about pelts!
@suntanboyee22 Cool. :) I actually thought MoT was pretty brutal with the deaths. Mean spirited, almost Fulci feeling. Especially the death with intestines spilling out and putting the crank in her mouth and splitting it open. I do think there are parts of MoT that is just hokey, Daria's cgi appearance was a bit odd! lol.
Yeah, US versions are cut!! it's horrible! I have the UK 2disc and the Arrow release! Amazing, all deaths are on screen, good stuff. Arrow dvd comes with a badass poster! :)
my favorite DA movie is deep red. One thing about giallos is a lot of them aren't even on US dvd. I liked one from 2004 called Eyes of Crystal, seems to be pretty unknown. Nobody ever will talk about it on youtube. Definitely get Martino's giallos and work from there. There's so many that I'm still learning of ones I never heard of still.
there's a user on here called giallotrailers, do a search and that should give you a pretty good amount of films to look through.
I "like" all his films, they are cinematic as hell ( as you say, too): having said that, I just didn't care for "Mother Of Tears".
His take on "Phantom Of The Opera" was skillful and is torn apart by fans and critics alike: unfairly, IMHO. The film displayed a true "creature of the night" and his writing was superior. "Phantom.." is usually held as his "worst" among fans, I think "Mother Of Tears" is.
@SilentStefan out of all the argento films i've seen, i enjoyed MoT the least. i'll def have to check out PotO! i usually go into argento films with an open mind. its can be difficult to do that cuz i always want to compare his films to suspiria. that might be one of the reasons a lot of people don't like a lot of his films. there are a lot of his films i need to see from 90's and 00's.
Great review. Picked up most of these over the past year. All great films. Really rate Lucio Fulci too.

I cant do a top 3 cause i havnt seen tenbre yet but heres my top 3 worst-
3-mother of tears (the only thing i like was udo kier was a cameo cause he was frank mandell in suspiria)
2-sleepless (couldnt make heads or tails of that one)
1-phantom of the opera (I really dont think an explanation is needed all i can say is if you aint seen it dont watch it especially whilst depresed)

It's great to see Argento on Blu Ray!
Deep Red & Suspiria are the benchmarks. Have they been released on BD?? I've seen a Suspiria BD......i think.
Not Argento, but have you seen Hitcher in the Dark? I liked it.
Great vid, Jeff! :-)

I'd say my favs are the same as yours are:
1. Suspiria
2. Deep Red
3. Opera
4. Tenebre
5. Plumage
Also agreed on Trauma being the most underrated and Cat being pretty weak. Mothers of Tears had some good gore, that's all.
Great video, jeff!

Tough. I'd say Phenomena is my favorite Argento flick, followed closely by Suspiria. Though at times, Inferno and Suspiria switch. Depends on my mood.
I wasn't as impressed by Tenebre as most people, but I will say, it's an excellent slasher/giallo hybrid.
