I've actually never heard of anyone playing accordions in the US... but I guess there must be SOMEONE ;P Accordions are pretty much "common" in Finland, since most of Finnish traditional tunes have some accordion playing in em. :) Check out Turisas, they use it in their metal, even on the albums.
