  • Ok Dom sound good!! So if the sensor is the same than if i had a d800 it would be as great sharpness and ISO as the D4....then is piontless to buy the D4 when you can get the same pictureimage quality on the d800.

  • Thanks for video, and 1 question,

So which 1 of these 2 cameras would you suggest to buy?

  • @whatthehellisiteee neither, if you need to ask then you will not be ready for either of these, i suggest you go with the nikon d7000, its an amazing camera and great sensor

  • I just bought this camera. They are impossible to find. It took me a month to find a new one. I guess they are slowing down production for the d800 that is supposedly soon coming out.

  • Good job. The DOF is equal from the sensors but new photographers think that there not because with a full frame camera you have to get closer to get the equal framing as a crop sensor view. So the camera moves closer giving the false sense that DOF is thinner on full frame which all your changing is your subject distance to camera.

  • @MrRLPhoto so very correct! but i do like how beginner photographers insist that they are correct before knowing the facts

  • Hi Great video by the way!!

I wonder if you can make a d700 vs D3 tutorial on ISO and sharpness??

    Till then keep on shooting:)

    Jose C.

  • @VaritadDeCai em there is no difference, it is the same sensor, just different bodies

  • Of course the sensor size changes the DOF. But not at minimun distance. Take a photo croping at the same size and you'll see it.

  • @davitzeiro no it doesnt, a larger sensor has no affect on DOF,

focal length, aperture, and subject distance are all that affect DOF

A larger sensor means you can get closer to the subject to have the same FOV thus giving a shallower depth of field, but that is just the same as changing the subject distance. check the video response video What is DOF

  • @dombower Absolutely correct Dom!

  • @Charizmm if there is no battery in the body it should still work. you will need aa batteries to get the fast fps

  • Comment removed

  • of course the dof doesnt change if you throw the cameras on the same tripod, but if i wanted to get the same framing of the d700 with the d300 i would have had to backup to fill in everything and the dof would have changed. that's why they say dxaffects dof

  • @TheMiszerak so what you just said there is correct, changing your position and camera to subject distance… changes dof… not the sensor size.

  • @dombower Actually sensor size does affect depth of field. More light is scattered through the diaphagram because it must move further out to get to the whole sensor. With a dx camera the light is able to be more pinpointed even at a wider aperture.

  • @Booyaaa100 what? I think you are refering to focal length there. the further away the aperture is from the sensor the longer the focal length thus why a super wide angle on a full frame is 14mm while on a dx it is 10mm

  • @dombower Nope light splatter as i like to call it changes with dx and fx cameras. You can look it up.

  • @Booyaaa100 you want me to look up something that you have just made up… yeah good one. dumb comments please leave on someone else's channel

  • @dombower Do you really not want to educate yourself? Seriously it takes like three seconds to google. You are wrong and I have no respect for people who refuse to accept the truth. Just google it seriously. Especially if you are trying to give advice to other people.

  • @Booyaaa100 hahahahaha you clearly haven't understood what you have read on google.

ill say it again in case you cant understand.

Depth of field (not field of view) does NOT change from changing the size of the sensor.

You have 2 cameras one is full frame, one is dx, put the same lens on them and shoot the same subject. but a object in the background (but still in the FOV) and the object out of focus will be equally blurry. DOF does not change. Now, you go read up on it. Seriously!

  • @dombower It does actually. I tried to send you a message with links to articles from well regarded websites saying exactly what I said. Unfortunately you have friend lock and I have no intention of friending someone who refuses to admit they are wrong, even when they clearly are.

  • @Booyaaa100 try watching this video and reading these comments as well watch?v=OUYuUs1aaCU&list=F

  • @dombower yes, he is wright. DOF is affected by senzor size.

  • @ladduro no its not. fact.

    your wrong, fact

depth of field is affected by lens lengths, apertures and distances, not sensors.

  • @dombower you just need to read more ;) stop comparing FF with APSC for one sec. Think about Micro4/3, CS, P&S cameras sensors that dont produce nice bokeh because of the sensor size. If you dont trust me, search it

  • @ladduro hahahahaha they dont produce bokeh because their lenses have such a short focal length. i dont need to trust you, i have done a bunch of examples that proves you are wrong. go watch and see for yourself.

  • Hi Dom,

Do you know if Nikon have any plans to upgrade the D700 or replace it any time soon?

I'm hoping to upgrade my D90 to an FX camera, but knowing my luck once I buy the D700 the following week Nikon will release a newer model .

    Cheers

  • @FirebrandNIRE yes nikon does have plans to upgrade its d700, infact it will upgrade all its dslrs .... and it may be soon for the d700

  • @dombower

Cheers for the reply Dom, very much appreciated!

  • @FirebrandNIRE I read somewhere that they where going to reveal the d800 and d400 at the end of august. I guess they changed there plans =/ I cant wait for the d700 replacement. If I where you I would wait, but the d700 price will drop pretty good once the replacement is released.

  • It actually changes the focal length. Look at the pictures you made. Isn't it weird that with the same lens but different sensor the space captured on both pictures is different. I mean the width. When you shoot with 50mm lens on FX sensor from the same distance, you capture 1,5x wider space than with DX sensor...!!! Learn some theory, than shoot.

  • @miplev oh right so changing the sensor has actually changed the length of my lens??? hahahahaha

    No!

Learn the difference between effective focal length and actual focal length.

you learn some theory smarty pants. cos your making yourself look a bit stupid here. Ill understand if you want to delete your comments once you have learnt.

Oh i cant wait for your reply to this again.

  • Didn't you forget that comparing the 'depth of the field' you have to use the same focal lenght. How can you meassure cameras with different frame size (DX and FX) using 50mm prime lens? 50mm lens on FX gives you equivalent of 75mm on DX...!!! U should learn some theorie before making and uploading such a video.

  • @miplev they are the same focal length. changing the size of the sensor does not change the focal length of the LENS. How about you learn about optics before you make such a comment.

  • Hello there! Awesome comparing, I will get the d700 this year. Now iam using the d7000 it a great camera but it is not a full frame. What do u think if the d700 and the d7000??? Huge difference right???

I wonder if you know how you use the sb900 as a lightmeter, how's the setting??? The manual don't really explain how exactly to do it.

    Have a god one, joseshootsraw.

  • my father just bought d7000 and its awesome

check my channel for short film and video test in hd

  • @Nikkor200mm Trolls suck more.

  • its NOT 6FPS on the D300 with bat grip its 8

  • why is it with the double A batteries it goes faster then a regular battery pack that goes with the camera?? is this the same for Canon cameras?

  • @dombower ok i am an intermeiate user of nikon but can never figure out how to blur in front and back but not middle (u did it on the remote)

  • @dombower i understand focusing on the one part and getting it blurry in the back but how did you do it so that it is blurry in the front as well (on the remote)?

  • Black vingetting on the cornner

  • i thought lenses on a dx would be sharper because their full projection circle isn't used so there's less coma and CA around the edges

  • I believe what you meant when you were discussing depth of field regarding sensor size is this:

The more one zooms (w/ fixed aperture) the more blur in background and foreground. When using zoom lens. To achieve a frame of a 1 metre wide and tall box in full view, one would zoom to 18mm on small sensor to fill the view, but with bigger sensor adds more field of view so you need to zoom in more to see it, therefore increasing the background and foreground blur. If that makes sense.

  • can you record a HD movie in a D700?

  • @bigaon69 d700 has no movie at all. Except it is probably gona be upgraded this year so chances are it will have movie mode then

  • @bigaon69 Unfortunately the D700 can not record HD movie though I am unsure about stop motion style videography. I believe the D700 has a thing called an intervalometer which can be used to capture shots in a certain time frame and how many frames to be captured during the active time-frame allocated by the user.

  • I like it when photographers help other people out. Its a big help and some thing you will not get at the store. Most people at the store dodnt even really know, they want to make a sale.

  • the depth of field IS affected by sensor size because the area of the photo in focus becomes proportionally larger the smaller the sensor becomes as much of the out of focus area is cropped out by the dx sensor. the same area of the photo will be in focus on dx and fx but that area will take up a larger amount of the dx frame. after all, the image circle cast is the same for both formats...this is dependent upon the lens not the sensor!

  • @realtheloniuscrunk the actual depth of feild does not change, the effective may change

  • @dombower im a beginner ,,and im in a budget if ill buy a d700 unit,,is it ok or it will be waste?thank you very much

  • @kulotzification if your a beginner then this is way way past what you want to be spending your money on. at the very very most you should be looking at the nikon d7000 (seven thousand)

  • @dombower D90 would be better for you to start out. I know a friend that got a D300 and she was a Beginne .It was to much for her and went out and got cheap lens. You are better buying a D90 and buying a good lens . 35mm AF DX lens would be a great start and a 70-200 F/2.8 Sigma . Thats what you would be able to get when you save all the money from a D700.

  • @m109r1800 what 35mm do you mean..a 1.4g or a 35mm 1.8g..i got 70-200mm nikon vr.11.a/f2.8

     about 35mm 1.8..between 50mm 1.4g.whats the best?

  • @kulotzification 35mm lens is better then the 50mm . DX -s Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 G I have the 70-200VR lens is my fav. I use it alot a weddings. You also need a Speed light SB800 . Then take photos and then take more.Try using Aperture settings on the same shot always keep youre ISO in control . If you need any help you can reply to my page.

And one mor ething HAVE FUN you will only get better and dont let any shutter bug tell you they are better. Good Luck

  • @kulotzification I think if you are starting out a D90 is great save the extra cash for a good lens. The D90 takes great photos just as good as the D300.

  • @realtheloniuscrunk I have noticed this also, i have just gone full frame and one of the first things that i noticed was the much shallower dof. Its quite sublime:O)

  • @realtheloniuscrunk wrgwrgwgwrgwrgwrg

  • Whats the song in the beginning of the video ? :o

    &&&&&&&

    I like//want full frame.

  • at first i didnt know that 8 AA's batteries can produce more burst than 1 single el3. I just tried on my D700 and really true. However the batter can shoot noticed drain very fast. Thinkin to buy EL4 but too expensive

  • Stop waving around a DX lens on your D700! haha

  • how do you like the camera? I'm thinking of getting an FX camera so I'm thinking of the D700 though I only have D90 and didn't get either D300 or D300s, but I needed an FX body for my 14-24mm f2.8G wide angle lens, what do you recommend me to do?

  • well depth of field is affected by sensor size in a sense because to get the same image, you have to get close, making the depth of field shallower :) but yeah, you're right, depth of field itsel isn't affected :)

  • has light really ever came in through the back? just wondering cuz it seems un likley

  • @ithree6mafia yes it does, thats why they sell eye piece caps, thats why if on a a sunny day and you have your lens cap on you will still get an exposure reading of f5.6 and 60th of a second etc.

  • this guy pronounced Nikon as it should be. other reviewers say "Naikahn"

  • HI dom is the nikkor micro 105mm can also be used for landscape and portrait photography? I have the Nikon D90.. Now thinking of buying D700 so i have a full frame as well...what about Canon 5DmkII?

  • im thinking buying fx format, but i dont know which to buy,new d700 or used d3,coz i can get the d3 is about 200usd cheaper than d700,...

  • @ahfox21 wow awesome! get the d3 if you dont ill buy it!

  • @ahfox21 i just got the D700 after comparing it with the D3

i dont really believe that the 11fps vs 5fps or the battery worth the extra money

also keep in mind that D700 has a build in flash-commander !!

  • hey dom in this video what type of memory did u use in the D700 cause mine give me R16 and when there done its 1 FPS and i am using Lexar Professional CF card

  • hey it's me again^^

    Which tripod do you use?

  • Hey dom, I've got a canon eos 1000d and I have a question...

I will buy me the sigma 70-200 F/2.8 OS but Then I need a lens for wideangleshots like for landscapes or something.

Which lens can yourecommend me?(sorry for my crappy english I'm 13 and from germany :) )

  • @Asassine0 your 13 and you can buy the 70-200 os.... you must deliver a lot of papers! wide angl go for the tokina 11-16 f2.8

  • @dombower so I can't buy it alone my father assist me in this hobby an this lens is for "christmas" but my lens which I got now lost the price if I use it in holidays.

So I buy it after the holidays.

Ok a tokina 11-16mm but which lens for portraits or should I use it for portraits too?

  • @Asassine0 depends on how you want your portraits to look, environmental portraits, beauty and make up portraits, indoor, out door close up etc..... the 70-200 is great for portraits but if in doors you want a wider lens than that and the tokina can be good but depends on what you are after

  • @dombower I need it more for pics of my family, friends or what ever.

So I'd taken a look on the sigma 24-70 but I don't now if it is the best solution.

But the 17-70 has good characteristics too.

    I don't know which is better :/

  • What type of lens would be best for a darker room?

  • @007Hunkguy one taht is on a tripod

  • Thank you, ive been figuring out which one I wanna upgrade too.

  • Finally someone pronounce "Nikon" correctly. I was in Japan last year and found out it's "Nikon" instead if "Naikon" !!!

  • lenses are sharper because FX doesn't magnify just the middle of them. I think that's basically why.

  • Mate.... I totally did it.

I put my 6k act D300 on Gumtree for £850 sayin that I was only selling cause I wanted to shift to f frame, and a guy asked if I would be interested in giving him my D300 with £300 to get his 632 shot D700 which was bought 2 months ago. I was like "hell yeah"!!

Bargain. Now I have to sell my sigma 18-50 F2.8 dc, so I can get the Sigma 24-70 F2.8 DG. I hope its as good as my 18-50 was!!

Cheers for the advice buddy, going to try out the camera tomorrow.

  • Good job. The DOF is the same if taken with the same lens, distance, and fstop (and then crop out the extra of the D700 so one gets the same view). I wish you used a different lens or moved the D700 closer so both had similar views, then we'd seen changes to the DOF. A 33mm lens at F2.8 on a DX (subject 8 feet) has a similar approximate "view and DOF" as a 50mm on an FX set @ F4.5. Thanks

  • Thanks for the reply Dom. Just looking for your thoughts.

  • Hello :) thank you for the nice video. I disagree though about ur DOF statement. Set the D700 focal length in a way that you have about the same picture conent, meaning visually you see the same, and THEN compare the DOF again ...

  • same focal length of same efective focal length> and are we talking about diagonal dof or straight dof. Ie if you are shotting a ball straight on, the background does not get more fuzzy, if your shotting it at an angle then it willhave a shorter dof but it depends on if you are talking about actual or effective focal lengths

  • Excellent review from a photographer's perspective.

    Thanks.

  • Dom, GREAT review! I like to know your thoughts on the following: Nikon is continuously coming out with new DSLRs that have similar features of its predecessors, but not quit up to the competition (lets say Canon) & their upgraded features (eg. Nikon D700 & Canon 5D Mark II). In making comparisons with Nikon & other DSLRs, it just seems to me that Nikon holds back on creating a "whole package DSLRs (of current technology) " , while other give more & for a lot less. I hope I made sense.

  • Great job on the depth of field comparison!

  • your reviews are so organic and not so dead like some other pro reviews.

    5 stars

  • thank you very much for your kind words

  • Nice overview and comparison.

  • What's the singer name in the beginning?

  • @TheRealChina adele i think

  • @TheRealChina Adele!!

  • @TheRealChina Adele- Daydreamer

  • hi ~ can you tell me which software of photo viewer u using in this video.well i am interest on it.. :) thanks.

i just using D90..i am newbie of it

  • I will hopefully be purchasing the D700's replacement in 2 or 3 years. I am waiting because im broke... :S lol

  • save for the next one... :)

  • oh i will, i think the D700s or x will be out the 2nd quarter of 2010.. not sure though

  • @fallenembers08 lets hope it is a d700s or d800 but not wanting a d700x (all those extra megapixels killing my computer and memory and killing the iso

  • I hope so to. I just don't think they should bring video into the D700 or D800.. Personally i think video on a professional series DSLR is a waste of time. You dont purchase a DSLR for video, although it does offer high sensitivites and depth of field with the lenses you attatch... so :S

  • I say bring on the video!!!!! only thing then would be how to choose between shooting cool video sequence and cool phtography. for example the snowboard shoot i did last weekend, how do i choose video or photo? its a tough one but i would love the opertunity/

  • hmm.. well if we can see from the past dom.. Nikon will surely bring on the video... btw i had a look at your cocktail fashon shoot video. what camera did you use for that particular shoot? just curious.

  • no idea what you mean cocktail fashion shoot. (dragonfly bar? if it was that one then i used both cameras, d300 and fuji s5

  • Sorry Dom, I just had to ask, did you work for Nova at the Multi-Media Centre some years back? I worked there from 2003-2007 and I can swear I saw you there. Oh, and thanks to your Tokina 11-16mm review I picked one up online, arrives in two weeks.

  • @Rorschach24 sure did! I just did one year and left when all the shit hit the fan of no wages etc. then came back home to scotland.

  • Very smart move. I was there until the bitter end but I managed to find another full time job so no major hassles. Still here in Japan for the foreseeable future. Love your photos, I bought my first DSLR in 2008 (Canon 40D) but the difference in quality from a P&S is phenomenal - can't wait for the Tokina to arrive.

  • thanks

  • what's the song in the beginning called ??? i love it

  • fantastic review! i love the side by side comparison.

  • hi dom, i really like your videos!

It's really easy to understand. Maybe you could watch my fotos, id like some advice from you, on what i could do better!

  • you buy the D700 or rented it? What did you think of that 70-200 you reviewed a awhile back? You have a need for it?

  • hi is that 24-70mm you mounted in your

    D700? thanks...

  • so if you use a dx lens on an fx camera then will it change the picture enormously?

  • a bit. resolution down to 6mp, not much ofa difference

  • six mp? isnt that half the amount with an fx lens?

  • at 3:41 did the double AA battery thing come with the battery grip? or did you buy the thing extra?

  • i really don't understand what depth of field is !!!

  • ill make a video

  • thanks

  • Yes, that would be great! D:

I hear DOF alot of times, but I really dont know what it means.

    Thanks Dom!

  • lol u toss the battery grip like its a piece of trash XD

  • no i toss it like it is a solid piece of hard ass material that doesnt need to be cared for like a delicate flower.. these cameras are built like bricks and people should have no fear of getting stuck in with their camera.

  • haha I got owned :) good point

  • at 3:48 dude ur funny...

  • Grats dom ! :D And nice review.

  • The DX lens on the FX body scales to a lower resolution, because otherwise you'd have a circle in your picture. it crops the image so that it would appear like it was on a DX body.

  • wow dom. finally on FX. Congratulations!

  • Thanks! This is exactly the video I have been waiting for. Now I want a D700 even more.

  • D80, S5Pro, D300, D700... so Dom, when we can expect d3? ;) Looking forward to part2.

  • Do it Dom, the D700 rocks. Truly. I don't regret changing up from the D300 for a second. It gave me a good excuse to ditch the less than perfect 18-200 for the 70-200 f2.8. The difference is remarkable.

  • One more thing I don't know if you know but how do canon 5d mk II and nikon d700 compare in low light? I've read bunch of reviews but they contradict each other and I would like your opinion and by the way great job on your videos!

  • thanks. the 5dmark2 is an awesome camera and its iso ability is imense! from images i have seen compared to the d700 it compared well against but its images were twice as dark... indeed some reviews are contradictory. i will do my best to get a good idea of the differences for you.

    regards

  • Couldn't come at a better time i'm thinking of getting a d700 but I've heard some reviews comparing d300 and d700 saying that if you compare d300 and d700 images side by side you won't notice any difference is that true? Probably at lower iso right but I hope not at higher iso?

  • hold on i am working on the next videos. there may be 3 in the end. I am about to go use it in a wedding tomorrow so will have a good impression of it soon enough.

  • Love the new camera Dom. Very impressive piece of machine there. Help me out with something though....I'm a long way from being able to afford a full frame DSLR like the d700 but I thought I heard that a DX format lens like the Nikon 18-200mm wouldn't work on a full frame DSLR.

  • it would but you would only get half the frame number of pixels, ie if it is a 12mp fx sensor and you put on a dx lens you will get a 6mp image. so you can use it fine enough.

  • ok - Thanks Dom. Like I said my next camera is the d300 so I have a while before I have to worry haha. Looking forward to part 2

  • Skip D300, seriously. It's either D90, or go all the way to D700, it's well worth it!

  • Great review Dom!

  • Comment removed

  • nice review dom as always....2 thumbs again....just had a thought though you can't use the d700 and your old old old nikon d300,so i reckon you should sell it to me...lol..keep the videos coming mate..inspirational

  • i love getting 2 thumbs!!! cheers

    might sell d300.... ... might....

  • well put me at first refusal .......looking at the d300 and d90 ...but leaning towards the 300,got the nikon 17-55mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8 as well as a couple of others and people are saying go for the d300....to get the best out of the lens....

  • you local? scotland? UK??

  • local dom yes in the uk on the east coast near grimsby

  • hmmmm what i ment was yes local in uk dom not the us or china.....

  • hmmmm, ill deffo have you up for first refusal then

  • cheers dom ...

  • d90 and d300 is more or less the same. (same sensor/pixels) but the d300 has more customizable functions, better built and has faster continuous shooting.

For Nikon I would choose D40, D90 then D700/D3. The rest I wouldn't bother with imo.

  • I agree.

  • DOF actually does change on FF, but not with the same lens. the longer the lens, the more DOF you can get and b/c the 50mm on the D300 becomes a 75mm f/2 (bokeh wise), it seems the same. However, if you put a 35mm f/2 on the D300 (about 50mm) and a 50mm f/2 on the D700, the bokeh of the D300 will appear as a 50mm f/2.8 on the D700.

  • you deserve it dom

  • Congrats! Although of course FF isn't for everyone! :D
