Stephen Carpenter didn't start using 7 strings until the Deftones 4th album, and has stated in countless interviews that the reason he started using 7 strings was because Meshuggah used them and he is a HUGE fan of theirs. That's even the reason he moved to 8 strings for the Diamond Eyes album, because Meshuggah started to use them as well.

They were already tuning to Drop A while using 6 strings.

@emmetts8 This is BS, every deftones album released has been tuned progressively lower than the one that preceeded. Chino has said it is done on purpose. The reason they switched to 7 strings on the 4th album was because they couldn't get any lower on a 6 without sounding like spaghetti.

BUT the common misconception with NON guitar players like YOURSELF, is that 7 string guitars are able to tune much lower than a 6 string, simply because there's an extra string. 90% of all guitars are 25.5in scale length. 6 and 7's alike. the only difference becomes, when the scale length of the guitar is extended to baritone length of 27in or more.

@sevenfacedsin A guitar can be tuned as low as you want providing you increase your string gauge to compensate for the lower tuning. The baritone scale adds extra tension to your strings so that they have a tighter "attack".
