The ground personal did this on purpose. Most these guys are nothing more than overpaid ,uneducated , drug users. I know this for a fact. I've worked for the airline for 25 years.
For that kind of money, it should at least include an insurance policy that would replace the bike. And if they are going to charge that much, it should be handled with kid gloves. I've had issues with airlines and bikes in the past... but not as bad as your situation. I hope you DID file complaint letters all the way to the top. Of course, you could ship it via UPS and then let them LOSE it forever. Sad truth is that there is very little concern for anyone or anyone's "stuff" these days....
Reminds me of the "United Breaks Guitars" video. You should get in touch with those guys, maybe they'll write you a song! I hope you get some recompense for your ruined bike. Passing this on as best I can. Best of luck with your fundraising project as well.
Actually the max amount of refund for damaged bike would be $3300 as your itineraries were within the US. However you had only 7 days to file your claim.
And yes the oversized baggage fee is non refundable as in other words you pay for transportation of the "cargo" by the airline, but i'm 80% sure that the bike has been damaged by the airport services
Take off the sunglasses. Nothing makes you look like a bigger douche more then wearing sunglasses while making a video. Also, you RAISE MONEY for "dams in Africa". You do not actually provide anything other than marketing. Don't pretend that you are Jesus with a dowsing rod or anything....
@andrewinsheffield how do I find this forum. Delta said they were going to do certain things and now have not... I would like to comment on their forum.....
Sucks your sweet bike got munched. I'm a cyclist as well, and my bikes are my children.
Gotta say tho.... $7k bike in a soft shell case with stuff getting stacked on top of it? Were the dropouts supported against each other with some sort of axle like thing? I mean, what did you think was gonna happen?
I learned long ago to box a bike yourself properly and UPS it to a bike shop in the town where you are going. I know... prolly nothing you haven't heard before.
Yaknow.. im sorry that happend to your bike, but things happen. Its not like they're going to do this to Everyone, accidents happen. Plus.. Next time try a Hardside case instead of a soft side. also Boohoo you had to pay for your bag like everyone else.
@felixksw This is in response to your comments about my cause and my Delta. I put out this video to a bunch of friends and it went nuts! The reality is we have raised more money than the project has cost. I do not use ANY of the money for my racing and or travel. I pay for it all with my money and sponsors. The cause is first and we have already affected many peoples lives in Africa.
They also lost 2 kids in their care. Bang up job Delta. Would love to see the pay out they're going to have to make on that one. Delta is a joke. Well as is pretty much every airline at this point.
Jonnk1985 - shut the F UP!!! You are so totally talking out your ass. Delta has done this to far too many people who take the time and effort to pkg their bikes, don't be a moron.
@cindylew100 How do you think why Delta's handling company damages more baggage than any other airport service provider? BECAUSE Delta's passenger turnover is bigger and in proportion the handling company deals with more baggage than any other handling company... No surprise that there would be more complaints.
Take my advice - try thinking a little bit before you say something in-comprehensive.
Things like this boil my blood. Nobody takes responsibility anymore. It's absolutely execrable. Businesses are so concerned with the almighty profit that they forget the most important part of the business: Providing the customer with the product or service that was promised. Customer relations? Just a pesky extra expense to be avoided at all costs.
I've only ever shipped my bike (UPS/FedEx) because there are SO many of airline bike destruction stories. Also... GET A HARDCASE. They cost a few hundred bucks and protect a multiple thousand dollar bike. Think about it
Delta? Between the TSA and all the other airlines (remember the Jet Blue incident with children doing the microphones from the tower?) stupidity constantly coming to light, I drive where I have to go. Glad I don't need to go too far :)
I hope you will get somewhere with this. It is unfortunate companies have to be motivated to do the right thing by public outcry, rather than by any sense of responsibility. Hopefully this brings more awareness to your cause, and you are riding again soon.
firstly what a waste of a damn good bike even if it is a roadie but for such an expensie bit of kit and the amount of travelling being planned i would of shelled out the bit extra for a hard case....you know the saying better safe than sorry........
secondly take delta to a small claims court if you need they still refuse to replace your bike this way you will do 2 thingsif you win get your bike back and claim for lose of sponsor money you would have raised if you did all events
We at Delta do give a "dam". We've been in contact with James to apologize and have resolved his issue. We believe it's important that his work continue. Thanks for all of the feedback.
As a fellow biker, I am very sorry to hear your plight. The reality of flying for anyone who does it is that sometimes you do not have a choice of airlines and often times it comes down to price. I just checked from CVG to HNL; Delta is $915 and US is $1260. Which are you gonna pick? I never check baggage but for those that do, the answer for peace of mind is: Trip Insurance. Also, check with your credit card company. They may cover it already. If nothing else, persist with Delta.
Screw Delta! If they skimp and try to skip out on their own negligence... I certainly am not going to be trusting them with my families lives while traveling, I will just take my business elsewhere in the future.
Sure you will.....? Even if it means paying extra money to fly with a different airlines??? Let me guess, you don't shop at Walmart either...do you? By the way, has anyone even verified if this guy is telling the truth? I find it hard to believe that Delta would not refund his $200 or replace his bicycle.
There's no doubt that something extraordinary happened here. This wasn't the result of normal airline baggage handling. That said, if you were shipping something this expensive (and valuable) - I would certainly consider more durable luggage (like a hard case), and looking into ways to insure your bike for transit.
That's obviously an expensive bike, If I were shipping it, I would want to know that it was insured against damage. It's a really shitty lesson to have to learn the hard way.

Dumbass! Try to read the rules and regulations for baggage transportation.
1) Your bike is an oversized baggage piece in terms of dimensions that's why they have charged so much at chek-in
2) IATA rules state that company is responsible for the condition of your baggage only if it has proper packaging. SO... it's only your problem smart ass, not delta's.
@Jonnyk1985 Thanks for the kind remarks Jonny. The bike was properly packed in a traveling bike case. I understand that they also "need" to charge more for an oversized bag, but Delta's is double the rest of the airlines and the highest in the industry.
If you are sure that you are right try to file an official claim for a refund, because according to ICAO IATA rules of baggage transportation state that companies are liable for lost or damaged baggage in the amount smth around $20 per kilo or so.
Stop doing monkey business posting your despair here =)))

Delta sucks they just ripped open my case on the very first flight it ever took. The flights were journeys through hell as well. I did get a replacement bag at the airport that was 1/3 smaller and about 1/5 the cost of the shredded one. Now we will see if they respond to a claim form. I suggest that you go online and fill one out as well just to make them jump through hoops if nothing else. Paul
@silverstudy Airlines are not liable for damaged packaging of your baggage, and a case would be generally considered to be a packaging piece, thus your claim is unreasoned.
Man, I am so sorry to hear about your bike. I've Tweeted and FB'ed out your video. I hope you are able to show your power to Delta....I'm helping all I can.

@wcoy79 I've done a few IMs and there is no way in hell that I would want to even try to do 20 under 30.
