Wow! Chop a few heads off, rob a few monasteries, kick the Pope out of England, deflower a few girls, raise a few taxes, and everybody hates you. Tough crowd.
Yes, Keith Mitchell makes an excellent Henry, portraying the right mix of volatility and self-pity. On the other hand, LOVE Lynne Frederick as Katherine. It must be the most sympathetic portrayal I have ever seen and highlights her vulnerability at the hands of the Howard clan. My favourite portrayal of Katherine by far and this part of the film was much more historically faithful to the real facts than the subsequent tv series.
I loved this film when I first saw it. Lynne Frederick was perfect as Katherine Howard, pretty and childlike. No other actress captured her as well until Tamzin Mercant appeared in the Tudors and broke my heart with her vulberability.
Keith Mitchell makes Henry an impulsive asshole but also vibrant and endearing enough to see why 6 women and an entire nation put up with him for 30+ years:).
And unlike The Tudors, the actors in this procuction have stage presence!
@MuatioAesa I was thinking the same thing! And that Katherine's uncle instructed her on how to behave and dress around Henry...! EWW!!! A man lusting after a woman a third his size and almost young enough to be his granddaughter... and the fact that her uncle cared more about his position at court than about her safety! Katie's family knew that she was reckless, naive, and ill-suited to the ruthless court but did nothing to protect her!
This interpretation of Henry is the worst I've seen. He reminds me of someone's goofy old grandfather than the most remembered King of the Tudor Dynasty.
@diddims lol i know that. that's why i'm saying considering that their characters are cousins they did a good job makin them look related compared to The Tudors on Showtime. I think both characters did well especially Natalie Dormer but she bares little resemblance to Tamzin
I can't believe Kitty's uncle! Her family knew that a girl of her naivete would not be able to withstand the intrigue of the court, they should have protected her, and look...! And that he abandoned her in her hour of need!
Gross, Henry! She could be your daughter! How could he have believed that such a young woman would fawn over a fat, stale old man with ulcers, is over twice her size, and looks like her grandfather?
@ThorneAstor I think she just gets a lot of bad press, i always thought she was just very naive and made mistakes which, at that time, cost her her life... =[
@ThorneAstor Catherine was a very sweet and kind girl. That's why Henry was so attracted to her cuz she was the last person you'd expect to have pre marital sex.She
was a good girl just....easier than people would expect.
@ThorneAstor Catherine was a very sweet and kind girl. That's why Henry was so attracted to her cuz she was the last person you'd expect to have pre marital sex.She

I like how they portray Henry how he most likely was: old and annoying who is also stubborn. And I have to admit as much as I want him to be like Johnathen Rheys Myers we all admit he wasn't really. Lovely though
No Catharine Parr was the last wife. Excellent BBC version "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" free on Netflix streaming. Keith Michell plays the king again-perfectly.
@Medusa0999 at no time would he be considered a pedo. He liked young women and the youngest he went were postpubescent teenagers which would make him an ephebophile at the worst. a pedophile likes prepubescent children under 10 years old. Idk why people keep misusing this term.
@melodymaxine Yes he was! Although at the time, the age of consent was twelve for women and fourteen for men; Katherine Howard, at age 18, was technically a grown woman (albeit young), but yes, Henry had no business around such a young woman. Why Henry? Why do you think that a woman young enough to be your daughter would fall for a fat, bloated corpse with ulcers to his legs?
I have the BBC DVD & VHS based on this movie but I have never been able to find this movie, what is the exact title and is it available to purchase online somewhere?
@Dtennantlover1 I think she was about 18 when they married which the girl in the film probably was, but still pretty sick for an older man to be attracted to someone who looks and acts like a child, though it was probably pretty 'normal' back then lol.
@Hipsishere It is sick, but what Henry wanted, Henry got, and child marriages while not encouraged did happen, apparently she was 17 when she died =( thankgod we live in the 21st century.
@Dtennantlover1 Yep men of power can be ruthless though in truth I don't think she was that young but it says different ages in different sources so know one really knows lol, and yes it's still happening today in some countries so thank God we were born in the right time and place.
@CherryBlossomBlyue Most historical sources say she was around 17 when Henry first met her and about 20 when she died, but it's hard to know her age exactly as no ones really sure of her birth date. Henry was definitely a dirty old man, whether or not he was a 'pedophile' (as it was common to have a child bride back then lol) as his wives got younger as he got older lol.
Thank you for posting these videos! Love them! If I were Catherine I would have thrown up at the thought of that repulsive, stinking old man staring my way. She should have claimed anything right there and then-other lovers, a pass, a desire to join a nunnery-anything to keep that old goat away.
Lynne Frederick died aged just 39 and is buried in Golders Green Cemetary, North London. A desperately sad story that goes to show that money won't make you happy - she got all her ex-husbands money but it bought her little solace. The poor girl literaly drank and drugged herself to death. She was so lovely, had such promise .. a sad story indeed.
@MrsNorry technically historians can't decide on her age, she could have been 14, 16, 17, or even 19 when she married him, according to historians. So, she could have been executed at 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 or 21, depending on which you go with

Probably, he is at this stage of his life. I mean, the festering wound that he have had could be indicative of Diabetes Mellitus and it could cause impotence. Looking at Katherine Howard and then, King Henry VIII in this film, I can well imagine the great gap of age. Aside from being very old, he is also obesed.
Is there any evidence to suggest that Catherine actually attended her cousin's coronation? She would have been between 8 and 13 years old at that time (birth-year between 1520-25, with the coronation taking place in 1533).
