I'm doing my 1st tandem jump 9-18-11 one day before my 63 birthday and last week I got a tutorial on packing a chute I was telling the instructor how you packed the pilot chute.I really enjoy you and your wife's videos.
Thanks for this vid. I plan to use this method for packing the reserve on an upcoming remote-control powered parachute project. It's essentially the same size and build as a pilot chute so it should work fine.
Unless you are really high and very experienced, leave your hook knife in the pocket unless there is no other option. Try throwing the pilot-chute first. If you can't get it out, then just chop. There is a pretty good chance it will clear anyway. Hopefully you helped an old person across the street that day and earned some karma points...
if it does get stuck in a horseshoe situation would you try to remove the bag from the main chute and cut the bridle with a hook knife or just go to your reserve immediately after trying to pull out the immovable pc from the boc pouch?
I've already been packing my pilot chute using a similar method but for a different reason. I only wanted there to be less friction with the underside of the pilot chute when I pull. I haven't always used the same method but thanks to you, I think that I'll stick to what makes the most sense.
Thanks for posting your video. You could very well be saving lives.
Does it matter if the bridle has twists in it? I can get the twist out of the "s" folds but then i have them where you stuff it under the right side flap....
Hi Brian, This weekend I had my first reserve ride. (jump 372) Due to a hardpull. Tried twice but couldn't get the pilot out, so reserve procedure. On the ground we found the pilot balled up in the pocket. I have a bungee pilot on a vector rig.
The rig was not packed by myself. When I pack myself I use your method and never had any problems pulling. So whenever I am using a packer I will ask them to use your method or not pack the pilot so I can do it myself.
just wondering what your opinion of the way base jumpers pack their pilot chutes.... (or at least the base jumpers i know) they hold the PC at the hackey grab the whole PC where the skin meets the mesh, fold up the bottompart of the mesh and then fold the bridle, then brush the top skin down over and around the bridle mesh combo and roll it and put it in the BOC.....(was alittle hard to describe, hopefully youve come across what i have sorta mentioned)
Thanks for this Brian! This video should be shown and teached to all at every dz ! It will save lives! And it just makes sense to do it the best way right from the start !
Brian, thank you for this pilot chute packing method. Not only does this work to keep from having your pilot chute locked but it also can't be done unless you have cocked your pilot chute. No more wondering if you've cocked the pilot chute;)
This is the only way i pack my pilot now! and i show new students how to do it, and demonstrate for them how the bridle won't come out like you did when packed the "normal" way!
Thanks for sharing this Brian! hope i get to meet you some day!
Packing class tomorrow, then off to Clewiston, FL to jump with Troy Droegemeyer. I will use this pilot chute method "fer shure" and if you save my life with it, you'll be set for life!
thanks so much for posting this video up! I remember seeing a chap at a dz doing this same method. I asked him why, and he gave me the explanation but didn't stick around to show me how to do it in the same way. Really glad I found this video! thanks again! ant :D
Just wanted to say thank you for your sharing and insight. I have shown three fellow skydivers your technic and how well it works. Thanks for possibly saving my life.
For a one-year new skydiver, that's the first I have seen of any explanation or possible malfunction involving deployment of the pilot chute following a cutaway. Thanks! I'll beusing the alt method from now on and hope to teach it that way myself following my coach course. I love the song too!!! From a Free Fall Express friend Thank-you!
Many thanks for taking the time to make and post this video Brian. Someone showed me this method a few months ago, but I couldn't remember exactly what they'd done, so it's great to have your clip to refer to. I will be packing it this way from now on!
Thanks Brian, for sharing that technique. I literally repacked my pilot chute as described whilst watching the clip. It makes perfect sense & is clearly a safer option. I know how I'll pack my pc from now on! Thanks again...
I tried your method just now, but not before I tried to extract my pilot chute with the method I used previously. I can tell you that my bridle didn't come out at all, and it was impossible to move! Tried your method and love it. The bridle coming all the way out before the PC has the added benefit of getting the bag as far above you as possible, increasing the drag and chance of extracting the PC. Thanks dude!!!!!!!
Thanks Brian this is very similar to how i pack my pilot chute but now after seeing ya vid I'm going to see how it would extract if i had a horse shoe and if needed change the way i pack it .
This is a great explanation of both the how and why of a technique that makes a lot of sense. As an added bonus, I found this to be less bulky in my somewhat snug BOC pouch than my previous method. Thanks for sharing this Brian.
You showed me this in 2003, and I've done it since, just with my own twist. One point you told me but excluded here is that with the main parachute out of the container, the BOC is no longer where it was. You may not be able to quickly find the handle on the loose flap!
Very nice, Brian. I've been packing my pilot chute the way you showed NOT to since I started skydiving. I never realized that it created more potential for bunch ups the way it does. I will be switching to your technique ASAP!
Thanks again. Oh, and the old skysurfing and freefly footage was awesome!
But it is nicely presented, from someone who people can trust, and clearly shows the "bunching up" hazard for those who don't understand that issue with where the bridle goes. Brian goes further than most do, by folding the bridle while the PC is on the rig rather than just near the bottom of the rig, in order to have absolutely the minimum extra bridle left out of the PC that needs stuffing in as the PC goes into the pouch. A useful video.
I will use this on my A-certificate pack-exam tomorrow. Thanks!:)

Hi Brian
I've been a packer for many years, and really like your method of tucking it neatly and safely away. I'm hooked!
Any thoughts on packing for a left-handed deployment? I'm going to have to switch mine (I think) with my shoulder issues.
