I went there 38 years ago (1975!), at that time there was no road, you have to climb up about 3 feet wide narrow road, we tried to push this rock and it moved back and forth. The monk was sitting and repairing the golden pagoda and he is yelling "please don't push the rock! " That was amazing!
It is our tradition not to allow women up there like every sacred places in Myanmar , whoever she is . It is not magical power . It is sacred power. The sacred place itself never punish anyone for offending because our religion depends on karma . but not the guardians there. When i was there 17 years ago. I remember that night when a woman pretended to be a man and went up there, clear sky turned suddenly into a fierce storm for whole night within minutes in Dec (usu no rain in Dec in Myanmar)
Men, it is not the ordinary rock. It is one of the most sacred places in Myanmar .What we pay homage is the Buddha hair relic in it under the pagoda. It is reason why rock never fall for 2500 years. I have been there 20 times when i lived in Myanmar. The rock never fall as long as the Buddha hair relic is concealed in it . Even during strong earthquake, it vibrate a lot, but never fall. U should go and see that most part of the rock dont touch the foundation below.
Am I crazy or are you all staring at a rock? Is there any reason why women aren't allowed up there? Will the rock lose it's magical powers if a woman touches it? I think if there were women there guys would stop staring at the rock, I would.
@3Hendon I think that this particular rock is something of a miracle, the way it's balanced. And nope, don't know of any other balanced rock stupas. I have seen photos of cool balanced rocks in Norway that people visit.
Just want to thank you Vagabonding for a great vdo and narration. You guys made it possible to let the world know that our country does have some some amazingly beautiful places and hearts.
The brutal military regime in Burma/ Myanmar uses the money it earns from tourism to maintain its stranglehold over the population. This is one of the regimes few sources of income. You can help to destabilise the regime if you deny them this support. Please do not travel in Burma. Foreign travel companies must be held accountable when they encourage foreigners to go to Burma. Please do NOT support these companies. I ask that you contact YouTube and urge them to remove these videos.
They should've moved the visitor center a bit further back. Man, I wanna go to Burma! It looks AMAZING!!!!

Golden Rock Stupa is truly beautiful. In your opinion is it a mere coincidence
that this is a "balanced rock formation" or is it possibly tied to other "balanced
rocks"? Do you know of any other balanced rock stupas other than Golden Rock.

The boulder is superglued to the base to prevent it from toppling.

maybe stupid question but is it real gold?
EUR0TIK 1 year ago
@EUR0TIK Yes and no. It's a big stone boulder, but Buddhist devotees cover it in thin sheets of real gold leaf. You can see them doing so at 0:46.
