As someone testified recently at the public hearing, the industry has had a good run and now it's time to go. This is unnecessary exploitation of animals, no question. Today it was 90 degrees in NYC, and it felt like 100. So DANGEROUSLY hot that the MORE marathon was canceled, and the half-marathon became an unscored "fun run"--to keep people safe. But the carriage industry think it's perfect weather to run horses down avenues, nose to tailpipe. How sad.

I love this video of well-cared for, healthy horses. I have to laugh looking at some of the comments posted (I actually have tears in my eyes from laughing). I particularly like the one about these horses usually being ex-race horses. I've never seen a Draft hose race. Do they not understand the weight of a loaded Vis a Vis and that a Standardbred couldn't pull it? It would be nice if the animal rights people would learn a smidge about the animals they proclaim their love for.

That's what I was doing when I got dragged into this. I help the downtrodden of Central Park, while the NYPD unit supposedly handling such cases is busy taking care of the carriage horse competition while ignoring the violations of the carriages.
That's where the horses came to my attention. Sit in one place long enough and you get a real good picture of things

They look the other way when you commit gross traffic violations, and certainly don't get involved when abuse is happening. The good news is 96% of New Yorkers are against this evil trade, and it is a matter of time before city officials give the public what it wants.
Let's look at liars, and lies, Baricon. The NY Carriage Industry Lie # 1) Horses have big enough stalls. Truth: Most horses can not lie down or turn around in their stalls. Lie 2) Horses get adequate water. Truth: Driver's do not stop often enough for horses to get adequate water. They want to make as much money as possible on their shift. Stopping for water is low priority. This is supported by a 2007 audit of the industry citing dehydration as a chronic problem.
Just because some of your horses are fat, does not mean they are healthy. These horses are not allowed to engage in natural behaviors, like turning out, or touching noses with another horse. From the time you press them into service, they live on average 4 years. Usually they are older, sick and injured ex-racehorses. It's like putting your senior citizens out on the street to work horribly long hours in all kinds of weather. Frankly it's disgusting. Shame on you. Get a different job.

Every horse in this video looked very good
to me. None were even close to going hungry.
They all looked fit and well toned. They all
looked like they enjoyed thier jobs. Nobody
was pushing them for extra demands. Whats
