Fascinating. - a contralto who could give darling Ernestine a run for her money. Yes there is some slightly suspicious intonation but it could be the playback or recording circumstances. I'd like to hear this down a quarter tone. Thanks a million anyway.
Interesting... speed clocked at 76 rpm, but shall happily adjust accordingly. Let's see... Meanwhile, yes, it is Schumann-Heink's recording that first and always comes to mind. Thank you, Vivian!
I think Bivolari is correct that some of the pitch issues might be the recording as I just heard an orchestral passage w/o voice whose pitch dropped very obviously
I like this rendition! It's very "individual." She certainly could handle the florid bits. Thanks for this video. I didn't realize it was on YouTube until today.
How many singing today could perform this better despite some pitch issues. From hearing her in another selection - the lighter tone and quicker vibrato suggests this might be pitched up @ 1/4 tone.
When I hear this piece, I immediately think of Schumann-Heink's spirited performance. However, Mme Spencer sings it with great florid technique and style. Thanks, Doug.
Ah! The Arditi ditty! She seems to have intonation problems which may be the recording. It's amazing what those old contraltos could do. Quite a spirited patch of singing. Done with great aplomb. Trills and runs in place and a chest more integrated with the voice.
