  • and to think that this is in slo-mo O.o

  • And they say weed makes you lazy

  • I used to be able to swim like that...until i took an arrow to the knee

  • @TheUAOfficalPage LOL YuS!

  • As I understand it right underwater conditions should zoom. Why there's no zoom in final camera view?

  • That was a long pool!

  • @Jogommo

    yes

it is the university of michigan pool and it is 50 m long by 25 m wide

  • there is no sound

  • I used to swim like that, then I took an arrow in the knee.

  • Is this guy a fish?

  • like a fucking torpedo

  • For people who don't know much about swimming, in these videos, he's hardly trying at all. You can tell by how his hands graze the surface of the water, his really wide kick and his breathing of one side. I'm kind of surprised, he's so epic that he beats my times while at practice XD

  • Hi, Michael ...

  • They've done it!! Sharks have figured how to morph into human form! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!... but don't swim.

  • anybody else think he went a little bit deep on his start there?

  • @Deemer105 i saw other video where they compare that to other guy, explaining how that's an advantage because he goes longer before he starts the strokes

  • @Deemer105 He probably knows better than you lol

  • Awesome! Thanks for uploading. Phelps is a true master. The dolphin kick is impressive. I have a question about one tiny thing. On left arm recovery he pulls earlier than on right arm recovery. (from 1:26) Is this optimal? In my opinion the motion during right arm recovery is more efficient. This is probably due to breathing though. But anyway. What do you think? Is there potential for improvement even in Michaels freestyle?

  • @mattialmostmusse It's a variation of freestyle which combines the benefits of shoulder-driven and hip-driven style together into a hybrid stroke. Perfect for sprint-middle distance events, Jason Lezak and Lochte use this technique as well. The extremes would be Stefen Nystrand's stroke (search his name on YT) vs Ian Thorpe's style. Michael incorporates both in synergy perfect for mid-distance events.

  • I bet he took massive bong hits

  • That is actually very cool.

  • ii used to swim like that, when i was still a sperm. =P

  • why does he make swimming look so easy?

  • ambot ani nga man

  • hes gr8 !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • /watch?v=7N4clWb8PNI

    everything is here...

  • Chuck norris had sex with a mermaid. And so Michael Phelps was born

  • He so pro at swimming...

  • here is the link for those who wanna watch the whole video:

  • My 8 year old caught a mistake at the end of the video. Michael took a breath on the first stroke. His coaches always tell him never to do that. :-P But, we know he was just demonstrating the flip turn...

  • @NewEnglanddur it didn't matter, his head already broke the surface of the water, thus creating no drag. Breathing does not necessarily slow you down, everyone has their own style.

  • Blimey - it really is a pleasure to watch! He is SO good it makes me want to get better, but I can't even do the dolphin thing... And I'm old. And tired.

  • if a flood happens michael phelps would rule the world

  • 101 people can't swim

  • That's at the University of Michigan's Canham Natatorium! GO BLUE!

  • wow he doesnt sit very high in the water. sack his coach.

  • bit of music would've been nice.

  • Phelps swimming as if his using an engine. ****ing Smooth ! !

  • /watch?v=ELgNLR-DSks <3

  • he looks like that guy of friends

  • haha,is it me or he didnt take a single breath in the first clip. Wow,he truly swims like a sperm cell

  • Hate him when you get 8 golds in Olympics ! idiots

  • Phelps The King

  • Damn! He look like a flat sperm, with the least resistance!

  • this video was projected on the screen during my swim meet in Montreal, PPO

  • Is he related to the Phelps family from the Westboro Baptist Church?

    Xb

  • Pot: made for champions

  • 99 people can't swim...

  • who would ever dislike this ?

  • So...if hes sprinting he does 2 stroke breathing?

  • He smokes weed and can still do this! I guess its not as bad as they say.

  • That was awesome! Thank you for posting it!

  • He is going so fast that his head is creating a miniature wave that clears water to the sides of his heads, which allows him to breathe without having to turn his head as significantly as other slower swimmers do. This makes his body more aligned on average, which in turn makes him faster. To summarize, Michael Phelps is so epic that even fluid dynamics wants to help him.

  • He looks like a fish. My god man. LOL

  • my computer froze because he couldn't keep up with him

  • crazy breathing. hardly turns his face above the water. if I could only breathe like that...

  • in the water this guy is perfect

  • Why does he breath every stroke? Im confused... I should try that..

  • it's so cool, see how his head bobbing actually let's gravity do work to help throw his arm into the water that's genius!!!

  • ii used to swim like that, when i was still a sperm :)

  • @MrKenjj hahaha nice one!

  • wait why is he breathing every stroke

  • I don't really mean to be mean but when you look at his freestyle at the last part from the half in water half out you can see that he bobs his head in the water and then he breathes every stoke and when he breathes it goes up then back down. This is coming from a swimmer so don't think I don't know what I am talking about.

  • @coffmangirl This is a natural element of a 'loping stroke' , where the head is used to help shift his centre of mass forward for maximum momentum in the propulsive phase. Phelps a 200m freestyler utilizes the most efficient style of swimming for this distance (as does lochte, biedermann etc) where one arm is used front quadrinally and the other oppositionally to allow for a quick breath, which is helps deal with the lactic build up in the muscles.

    PS. I'm also a swimmer :)

  • his dolphin kick is innnnsssaaannnneee.

  • have a look on my video, its about phelps, great montage

    /watch?v=pnAT9KQeOxo&feature=channel_video_title

  • They had to mount the side camera on a lambrogini to keep up with him.

  • 1:35 Nice

  • MERMAN!! I called it.

  • i remember after he won at beijing, my parents watched it and they talked into doing swimming lessons and stuff, i was ended up in precomp aand I FUCKING HATED IT, like it was boring i was tired all the time, and it sucked ass, eventually i quit and i was so happy i didnt have to do it anynmore, BUT now my dad wants me to try it again, i dont wanna go anywhere near a swimming pool

  • Is he breathing through his ears? dolphin... definitely

  • He jumps off at 1:10 and flips at 1:36.... so he does an easy swim holding 26..

  • Phelps makes it look so damn easy....!

  • human dolphin!!!

  • weed expands your lungs if you smoke it once in a while, i am a swimmer and since i started smoking weed i can hold my breath for 2 mins + and i dont have to take as many breaths when swimming freestyle. So yay weed!

  • @KroatianBOInigga are you fuckin serious??

  • @H2Raby yea?

  • @KroatianBOInigga Well I'm having difficulty finding credible scientific evidence of that on the internet.

  • smoke week and you will be good at swimming

  • nigga swims like a dolphin

  • mike... lov u

  • HE WAS BORN TO SWIM!!! AMAZING ATHLETE

  • in the first part hes high-fiving people

  • you are very good

  • i swear his form is INCREDIBLE!

  • why does he make swimming look so easy?!

  • How lucky we are nowadays!! This video is incredible.!!

  • michael felps was of course the first sperm

  • the camera angles are awesome. i wish i could swim like that! very cool to see underwater.

  • half man, half dolphin.

  • @Runaholism I think it's more 75:25 in favour of the dolphin

  • he swims like a whale

  • I got the same birthday at him... except me is 12 years later :P

  • If i was him and stuck in the middle of the sea i wouldnt worry too much ...

  • oh...these huge feet...

  • You actually want to get as much air out of your lungs as possible, to expel the carbon dioxide that builds up, and so that you can breathe as much clean fresh air in when you pop your head up. It's the carbon dioxide that makes you feel out of breath. Breathing is the most inefficient part of the stroke so you want to do it as quickly and smoothly as possible. Put your lips together, blow out slowly, when you've finished your stroke, turn your head, breathe in.

  • how the hell he breath?? {ritorical question,dont start replying}

  • @ftlptba Gills.

  • @qbaker20 ??

  • @ftlptba You asked "how the hell he breathe??" He has gills. Gills are things fish use to breathe underwater. Mr. Phelps uses the gills he has to breathe underwater.

  • @qbaker20 i suggest u to read the whole comment

  • @ftlptba I did, I am just not sure what "ritorical" means. Maybe you should give me the definition? [That was rhetorical, no need to define it] :-)

  • @qbaker20 seriously ,now u understand how miserable fag u r? u r like these retards 13ys old american boys that u say them not to do something and just because u told them that ,they do exactly the opposite ,and also think that they done something clever..u r pathetic

  • @ftlptba Calm the fuck down, it's just a joke. Pretty much like your initial comment. Super irony going on here.

  • @TheLocalDJ YEAH A JOKE,, then u have very bad sense of humor..

  • @ftlptba That's pretty vague. I don't know how telling you to calm down makes me have a bad sense of humor. So I'm going to assume you have a bad sense of humor, just like how you assumed I did.

  • YEA SON!!!!!

  • @MASHDOTCOM, so that when he resurfaces he doesn't have to exhale and inhale.

  • What I don't understand is that he doesn't keep his breath in when underwater. It increases ur stamina when swimming to hold ur breath in so that the oxygen in your lungs can continue to enter ur bloodstream.

  • @MASHDOTCOM

Usually one blows air out when they are underwater because when you come up for air you just want to do exactly that. You don't want to waste time expelling extra air and breathing in when your head comes up. Also when you are holding your breath you are wasting energy trying to keep it in instead of naturally letting it out. Who told you to hold your breath?

  • this guy is an amazing

  • i bet my sprint isn't even his easy. :P

  • that 50 was a 26

  • mann this guy is like a fish

  • Americans GMO diet results...Monsanto's corn for all please!!

  • my coach has always told me to breathe every 3 strokes?

  • @XxMRKENTxX

Thats right, for bilateral symmetry. But in competition people breath every 2 stokes so they can get more air. But doing it during a normal practice session will make 1 side more tired then the other. You can practice breathing every 2 strokes going 1 way but make sure to breath on the other side on your return trip.

  • breathe*

  • LOL its like he's doing an underwater dance!

  • @shaan5262 you got owned

  • @shaan5262 Now, why couldn't you have said a reply like that, instead of insulting me? I've been noticing some good people breathing every two, and I was just wondering if maybe I should do it too. I don't think my coaches are wrong, as my high school is a state champion year after year, and having a good body roll for freestyle is achieved more easily breathing both sides.

  • @shaan5262 shaan5262 you got owned, accept it.

  • @shaan5262 Actually, it is a perfectly valid question. I am a varsity swimmer and I have been to national competitions. I have been told by many coaches over the years to breathe every three strokes because it is better. I just returned yesterday from a 7 day swim camp at a major university, which also told everyone to breathe every three. So, if you would like to not be a complete asshole and actually answer a question, be my guest. If not, please do not respond.

  • @xAUSSIExMATEx I've seen some swimmers breath every 2 strokes -on their left side for one lap- and then +on their right side for the following lap+... repeat cycle. I never really wondered why...

  • that streamline was as tight as a three year old

  • Why does he breathe every two strokes???!

  • 1:09 it's amazing what the human body can be trained to do...

  • @bubblewrapmonkey

his fingers aren't closed fully because according to research it's better to have your hands just relaxed, not completely closed or completely open.

  • @llrullesll yeah, agreed

  • at around 1 minute in, you can see how his legs are double jointed....

  • He takes a breath after each stroke? Is that good or is it better to take breaths after a couple of strokes?

  • @MrToad321 You mean after every two strokes? That's usually what I like to do, but I guess it's all preference. It's good to have a pattern, though. Breathing every two, three, or four is good.

  • look at that cap CW best swim club in the world i wish i used to go when michael did

  • why aren't his finger's closed together?? O.o

  • i remember swimming like this... then i woke up.

  • P-E-R-F-E-C-T

  • I'd Tap that..!! ;)

  • He's a merman.

  • im trying to figure out why he breathes after every stroke it would be faster to do so after every three but what do i know he is a pro

  • What a fish

  • i would like to join the pole shift survival group or start the new one.

  • he just beats the shit out of the water til he gets where he wants

  • you think this is his best? hah!
